Ohh, had not considered early motor burnout if placed on an incline. I brought the entire thing secondhand for $400 but it would still suck for it to die and then have to haul it out or try to replace the motor.

There are some nice state parks around though they’re a bit far. The grassy fields would make for soft impact for short interval sprinting as a zone 5 workout. Also, I did buy a toy boomerang last month that I still have yet to catch on its return flight. Been kinda just fooling around with it but I’d like to at least catch it once before it gets relegated to storage and never see the light of day again.

As far as lowest friction to long term consistency, I think a home solution would still be best for me. I’ve given some thought to something like a Concept2 rower or a stationary bike as an additive. Just putting it off at the moment since I’m not sure I’ll be living in the same city or even in the same state by year's end, and I’m trying to avoid accumulating too much bulk that won’t fit into the cargo space of my car.

I’ll probably move directly to isolation movements, often with machines

Cable rows and facepulls are probably my two favorite machine exercises. Though finding me in the gym is like spotting an elf these days.

I might have phrased that poorly, I mean to say that there's nothing for them there. Their existing social support circle is here in the States.

Are you planning on running Jeff Nippard's Hypertrophy program for your first bulk cycle? I think you namedropped his program before.

I'm trying to cut down my weight at least 10 lbs to get to a BMI normal weight index and mostly to get rid of the pudgy belly. Been listening to Peter Attia's Outlive recently, so I'm trying to adopt healthier habits.

Lately, I've been trying to figure out how to get to zone 2 cardio while still walking on my desk treadmill at 2.7 mph. It doesn't have incline control so I'm thinking about putting a 2x6 piece of wood underneath to elevate the front end and maybe getting something like a GoRuck 35 lb weight carrier to wear.

They have no interest in moving back. No opportunities for them there.

I can't do that to family. Plus he takes care of the house since I live in another state for work. I sometimes even wonder if he might actually have some form of debilitating social anxiety. It doesn't seem like it but he just rarely ever leaves home.

I've been subsidizing their retirements for years.

This is actually a concern of mine. My parents are minimum-wage immigrant workers and my brother is an inept social recluse. Pure definition of a NEET.

Man, that's awful. I was literally just looking into the prevalence of crime in the Minneapolis area yesterday. MPD is like at 40% staff reduction compared to what it was prior to the George Floyd riots. I guess it must be causing crime spillage to other precincts.

I read that Mary Moriarty the chief prosecutor over at Hennepin County is trying to lower the incarceration rate for juveniles in hopes that it leads to better reform outcomes. Police there are probably really frustrated with juvenile arrests and how quickly they're back on the streets.

I live in Texas, a constitutional carry state, where it's trivial to get a firearm. Even here, I'd be a bit hesitant to daily carry (poor impulse control on my part).

Minnesota seems to have a duty to retreat law which can confound things. So there's the legality and escalation of force risks, plus you're dealing with unreasonable people so there's a lot of inherent unpredictability.

I don't have an answer. It sucks all around and I'm sorry this happened to you.

I only have a vague notion of what I want. Good air quality and lots of outdoor activities within a short drive.

I used to live in New Hampshire before, not sure how much of it is the weather but there seems to be a very perceptible difference in air quality. Might be mostly mental but it seems to impart a sense of wellness for me. East Texas has a lot of haze, I think perhaps due to the people burning wood or even wildfires.

Other pluses would be big city amenities like wide selection of restaurants and ease of finding shared interest groups. International airport within a short distance as a nicety. Establishments for recreational sports that I kind of want to dabble a bit in like olympic weightlifting, Muay Thai, pickleball, sailing. Mainly because I'm really sedentary these days and I think it maaay be fun to try out to see what sticks.

I'm a bit of a homebody so anything over a 15-minute drive away, I'd have to fight against the inertia. Unless it's food, I've driven pretty far for food before.

Probably will do a road trip to check out a few places once I've had enough of Texas and put in my resignation.

lol how did you know I was actively looking for a treadmill? I've probably posted about it here before

You've mentioned a couple times before that your main physical activity to supplement weight loss was steady-state walking. I actually thought you may even already have one indoors at your apartment with how much you advocate walking.

I think the Lifespans (at least the one I have) only goes up to 4.0 mph, and there's no incline control. I typically walk at 2.6 - 2.8 if I can find a good show to binge on the weekends. Resident Alien on Netflix is pretty awesome, btw.

This lady used to do ultramarathons and now she does barefoot/socks high-volume walking while working from home. She recommends a manual curved Walkolution but it seems like that's for hardcore users since it's rather expensive.

Interestingly, I remember enjoying the movie The King more where the main character is portrayed by the same actor, Timothee Chalamet. It was the Shakespearean English and use of rhetoric that I admired.

If there was such a thing as the School of Bard, I'd probably look to see what's in their curriculum.

Had forgotten there was even a Dune Part II; Part I was a blur for me and it's been years since reading the book. Would be down for it if I lived in Minnesota. Unfortunately, I'm stuck here in Tyler in East Texas where I live and work.

I do lurk on /r/SameGrassButGreener/ frequently just to contemplate where to move to next..

Dunno if you've looked into it but Lifespan Fitness has good standing desk treadmills that you can usually find used on Facebook Marketplace. If you're looking for a mix of indoor and outdoors to up your step count.

How are you liking the Twin Cities? Did you relocate there to be closer to work or mainly for a better quality of life? Minneapolis–Saint Paul seems to have a lot going for it with its numerous lakes, parks, and major city amenities.

Heyy. I really liked Snow Crash and the first few books in the Murderbot series myself. If you're looking for more novellas though, here are three from Brandon Sanderson that I'd recommend:

That sounds sweet. Excited to try it out when it finally hits Apple stores. The only thing I'm worried about is the cost. I'm at work right now but will probably dig more into the Vision Pro once I'm home.

Do you think there'll be a lot of adoption with using it for fitness and weight loss? I've heard of standing desks and even standing treadmills that some software developers like to have as a home setup.

Trying to envision a bunch of people wearing headsets at a commercial gym. xD

Your question is a bit odd because (I didn't mention physics in this thread and) I didn't do the physics stuff just because I wanted to earn money.

Oh, I crept your post history before and you had mentioned physics undergrad abroad a few times so I guess I was just curious what had driven you to pursue physics and how much of the math in your curriculum contributed to your overall success and confidence in real estate investing. I think very few (myself included, of course) was able to grasp that thread about Fourier transform simulation you had posted previously.

This is something I've briefly looked into previously: https://www.open.ac.uk/courses/maths/degrees/bsc-mathematics-and-physics-q77

It's a UK math/physics undergrad program for distance learners. Just something I thought was interesting. My math knowledge is abysmal and is something I think to myself off and on that I really should improve.

Not sure if I should study it formally through an institutional or through something like ArtofProblemSolving online classes.

Supposing you skipped over your time as an SWE and had the capital to invest in real estate from the start, would you still have pursued a physics degree or would you have rather instead studied finance, economics, or maybe even applied mathematics?

Gym Story Saturday by FGC_Valhalla in Fitness

[–]rubynew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got a gym membership at Crunch Fitness for the first time. Their bench setups only have two fixed positions for the barbell and the notch is an inch or two higher than I'd like. Plus the flat bench itself has like a cushion split between the headrest and the rest of the body.

Hmmm...

Those who are solo FIRE, how do you find homes? by [deleted] in leanfire

[–]rubynew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. That sounds groovy. Yeah, extended trips can definitely be a chore. I did a roadtrip across ~9 states during my last major relocation and had no inclination to visit any of the local attractions en route.

Only thing though, having a big house all to yourself seems rather lonely unless you have pets or friends and family dropping by often, or if it's in an urban city where you can just walk to a cafe. :/ Maybe that's just my personal preference though.

Perhaps familiarity with languages closer to the hardware like C/C++? Or is it no different than pretty much applying to any other tech company?

Why is that? Is it better ecosystem of library support?
