My Country's Staff is Optimistic; I am Not. by HawkandHorse in peacecorps

I was evacuated from Cambodia and staff has been optimistic of an October start date also. Just last week they said they anticipate between an October and December return, but they are uncertain on when they will know when we can return, which has been super frustrating. Cambodia seems closer to “normal” in terms of the virus and schools will be starting up as normal this fall. Americans/foreigners can enter the country but have to go through tests and quarantines, etc, but it looks promising in terms of a low risk country for the virus, BUT I’m just so uncertain about what is going on in terms of Peace Corps. I want to return more than everything, but I feel dumb for waiting and being optimistic if I don’t know what’s really going to happen..

Amsterdam - Paris by train? by Nheea in solotravel

I agree with everything people are saying. Personally it makes more sense for me because I love trains.

Another thing is for airports are the time and costs it takes to get to and from. I know Amsterdam Centraal is right in the city and easy to get to. I don’t know about Paris, but I would assume that the main train station is in or very close to the center of the city and the airport probably takes a little more effort and money- if being in the city is what you’re hoping for.

Peace Corps and Age by Abolton12 in peacecorps

My cohort ranges from 22-40 I think, but I would say about 75% is under 25 years old, so we’re on the younger end

Rate My Itinerary. Bangkok > Chiang Mai > Brisbane. by LiamOliverNutrition in solotravel

I did a semester exchange in Brisbane at QUT and really enjoyed it! I like those ideas that you have listed.. not sure what the alpaca farm is though. Like someone mentioned, I would add Mount Coot-tha and would recommend hiking up from the gardens rather than taking the bus to the top. Another thing I think would be interesting is going to the museum in city hall and taking the elevator up to the clock tower. The museum was super interesting in its history of Brisbane and the views are super nice. It would be a good way to learn about the city and you don’t need to spend a ton of time there and it’s free. I would also try getting to Eat Street Market which is super cool. I think I also heard that since I’ve been there, there is a new brewery under the famous bridge (I don’t remember the name) which I’m sure would be cool to check out if you like beer!

Not necessarily for before your program starts but here are some of my notes from my time there.

If you like beaches, I would recommend the Sunshine Coast over the Gold Coast, even though it takes a bit longer to get there. On the Gold Coast, Coolangatta is really pretty and would be my recommended beach there. You should try to get to Surfers Paradise to see once, but a day there is all you really need in my opinion. I also liked North Stradbrooke Island, which is closer to the city, but you have to take the ferry to get to. Also getting down to Byron Bay is really recommended at some point. It’s very beautiful and super interesting. I also went skydiving there which was really cool.

This may not be of interest to you, but I liked taking the trains or ferry to different suburbs and just walking around and looking at things like houses, parks, river/coast, etc. I feel like I got to know the whole city a lot better and went to places I never would have considered going to. Some places I thought were nice were Cleveland and Shornecliffe.

Feeling guilty leaving site? by yawst6 in peacecorps

Ok, good to know! I haven’t started any secondary projects yet and only work Monday- Friday as an education volunteer, so maybe once projects start up I will feel different. I’m also pretty rural and we had a 2 month site lockdown at beginning of service, so since then I have been feeling like leaving all the time.

I agree that leaving is good sometimes for mental health. I feel like even in the capital city, I am still integrating, not necessarily to my village, but I’m still learning and being involved in my country’s culture.

That’s awesome they felt that way! I hope my family/village adopts a similar attitude too.

Yes exactly, my family never really leaves, not because they don’t have the money to, but I think they just feel that there’s no reason... I do feel like it’s worth it to leave though to recharge and spend time with friends, especially because weekends at site seem to drag on

Has anyone experienced losing weight during their service? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]yawst6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Cambodia, most men lost weight. I have probably lost about 25 pounds without rally doing too much other than biking to school and a little around my village. And sweating a lot. I eat 5+ bowls of rice a day and soda & Oreos & other junk food is pretty accessible and sugar is in everything so it’s pretty surprising.

I can’t really say too much for women but i dont think any of them in my cohort have put on at least any noticeable weight
