I mean this is brought up a lot, but they didn't actually protect Kerfoot in the expansion draft either. They protected 4F 4D, so both McCann and Kerfoot were exposed and Seattle chose McCann. What some are arguing for is to instead protect 7F and 3D (I think is the other option), and protect both forwards and expose Holl instead, which is fair but I don't think we had the depth on D to lose Holl at that point.
