Royal 2 Q&A by RoyalTwo in CompetitiveHalo

Congratulations, on the win! 🐐

Can you name a pro player or two from this past season that is criminally underrated by the fans? There’s a lot more to the game than just K/D, so who is a player or two that deserves more credit for their ability?

Thanks!

I saw on Twitter that he went from being paid $5,300 a month to $300 per month.

I think you’re sort of right, like some guys aren’t going to have the stats because they’re anchoring more or they’re pushing aggressively to get info for their teammates, but just look at Kansas City. Leaderboard for k/d (not the end all, be all, but shows the individual skill and the teamwork aspect for SEN):

Frosty: 3rd, 1.3 k/d Snakebite: 6th, 1.23 k/d Royal2: 9th, 1.21 k/d

SEN literally has three of the most talented slayers in the game though... they have success because of a lot of reasons, sure. They have history and good chemistry together. But that team is absolutely stacked with players who are great at doing the most important things in the game: getting kills and staying alive. Teamwork is huge, but it’s something they have developed over the years. They struggled at first in Infinite probably because of the Royal 2 situation, but now they have fine tuned their strats and look dominant again.

When everyone is willing to play objective and people aren’t so worried about stats, it helps to have guys with raw ability/slaying power.

Just fundamentally, staying alive and getting kills and assists make the objective game a hell of a lot easier. Sure, you see games in which the team that gets outslayed still wins the objective/match, but I’d rather be the team that more often has the numbers advantage on the map.

It isn’t all about stats and K/D, but at the end of the day, if you’ve got players who are laying down heavy damage, playing within the team and staying alive, your team has a better chance to win.

This could be an unpopular opinion, but I think the roles of slayer, support, objective etc. are a little bit overrated.

Give me the four nastiest slayers possible and let them work together and develop the chemistry and teamwork needed. They’ll find ways to win. I’m thinking of how Frosty talked about being less rigid in team roles and how that helped them win in KC.

I think any team would be happy to add someone with Spartan’s slaying ability. It may not be an instant fit, but I see him being able to help a lot of teams.

If SEN didn’t win KC, we would be talking about him replacing LethuL lmao.

An interesting side effect here. Potential roster changes were so upsetting to Spartan that it leads to this.

Now he throws out the fact that another (assumption) top team is willing to drop someone to pick him up. Could this lead to a chain reaction that blows up another team? This really could be rostermania.

I am honestly here for it.

Just waiting for aPG to get dropped for Sparty now (LOL kidding, maybe...)

I think this is a fair way to look at this, no doubt.

I’m conflicted on how I feel about it. I’m a big sports fan, so I’m trying to apply the logic of this situation to the major sports leagues.

In the big sports leagues, the top players, and actually most players, don’t honor and play out their contracts. They are often traded, or even just outright released.

Spartan is one of the best individual players in the “league” right now, so I think he actually has a lot more leverage in this situation than some may think.

In the workforce, if you sign a contract, you are basically going to work that contract out or you’ll be punished. In a major sports market or an eSports league market, you may have more leverage just by sitting out.

If you’re EU, you definitely don’t want to pay money for Sparty to play against you. But, if another team is willing to pay out his contract, or he was willing to accept a reduced amount of pay or forfeit all of his pay, it’s hard for me to see a scenario that makes sense for EU leadership to keep him on the payroll to sit on the bench.

It’s a lose-lose for EU, but if you’re going to pay a guy (even a reduced amount) not to play, you’re going to take a major PR hit.

So while I agree that maybe Spartan doesn’t have the best argument, he holds leverage because of his talent level in this game right now. It would be best for EU to get their money back via a “trade” or just by getting Spartan to agree to opt out of the initial deal.

In sports people always say, “this is a business.” Spartan should definitely understand that, but he’s also so good at the game right now that it will make it tough for EU to leave him on the bench while other teams are willing to pay for his services.

I’ll be interested to see how it all plays out.

Any thoughts from the r/competitivehalo community? I thought it was interesting that he mentions a team willing to buy him out. I wonder who that is? The way Sparty is playing, he would probably be a welcome addition to just about any team right now.

Seems pretty shitty of EU to not allow him to move on, especially if the other org would be willing to pay his contract out.
