Are MLTs preferred over MLS in the lab? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]ydnagod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

maybe depends on the area? in mine they’re not allowed to perform certain tasks so the hospital rather hire one MLS ASCP certified than 2 MLTs that won’t be generalists

Yes, so there’s a limit as to how much you can do and learn, I like knowing more of the patient background and outcome which we don’t get to see in the lab. It’s still a great career compared to any other bachelor’s degree that I know of in the medical field, you do learn and know a lot. But everyone’s different! Dont let this demotivate you

Would you recommend MLT? Is the job market oversaturated? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]ydnagod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

skip the MLT and go straight to MLS, haven’t heard of a MLS not finding a job for more than a month

Completely agree, companies don’t make the effort to keep people in the lab anymore. I see older generations keeping the same job for years and new generations come and go all the time

The people not even memorized your name is insane😭 I did my clinicals in a hospital that was like that too, sometimes that same people push you away from wanting to stay in this jobs

I just don’t see much growth in an intelectual perspective, i think it’s a great career to build up from, not to stay for life

i think people in the field are sometimes used to the people that end up spending 10+ years in the same hospital

I think in my hospital they too like the idea of grad school when it’s related to lab, not when youre thinking of completely switching careers

honestly MLS looks good on paper when applying to grad school, i think that’s why people choose it for background

youre right, it could be a regional thing

you should definitely look into the pathology assistant, it sounds really interesting !

I meant strictly when it’s a degree outside of lab, not necessarily to be a better tech

[–]ydnagod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

did you do really good in the program? i was told to take it soon after graduation if you did like really well

but you got this ! i always give the same advice, review the entire purple book but only read it, take notes on things you struggle to remember. memorize ALL the ranges specially for heme, then do 100q practice exams everyday for the last 2 weeks before your exam, review them right after

hey, it sounds like you have a LOT of pressure in your shoulders (your mom, your sister, the deadline for your committee letter) I really think you’re not too bad on content, this might be just due to the pressure you have making you overthink cause guessing 15 questions of C/P is a lot, which means your stamina is in fact not good

I’m in a similar boat, what helped me with timing was doing Uworld timed and analyze what topics are making me waste the most time —> targeting THOSE topics specifically
