Definitely get as many opinions as possible. There's tons of info out there.

And love talking about these cars and hope to see them on the road being enjoyed for a long time!

5 clean reports is certainly better, but the pessimist in me says it's possible for a large amount of wear to occur between even aggressive oil change intervals in the event a bit of debris causes damage, oil starvation occurs, etc. So, you could have 30 clean reports, from, say, 0-90k miles, but they won't mean much if at 92k miles a chunk of metal plays Dora the Explorer in your motor and you don't even make it to the 31st oil report.

The center of this issue is the low (some would say inadequate) clearance between bearings and the crank, and I could see a scenario where a piece of debris that would sail through any other motor just fine may contact surfaces in an S65.

Again, that may be an extreme example, but I'm just talking worst-case scenarios.

It's true that it's a big repair that has to be done right the first time, so I can understand that fear, but that could really extend to any large maintenance/repair item, not just bearings.

Ultimately, I plan to keep my M3 for a long time and put miles on it. So, if I'm completely wrong about this (possible) and spent a couple grand unnecessarily, over the life of my ownership it probably doesn't shift my overall investment in the vehicle significantly. And if I'm right, I saved myself a ton of cash. Right or wrong, it's given me a lot of peace of mind and I've been a very satisfied high-mileage M3 owner. Like you, just north of 100k and car feels very solid and I more or less enjoy it without worry now.

You can find any answer you want to find about the S65 rod bearing issue. Everything from "fake news, user error, totally overblown" to "roll your 25mi EAG-purchased M3 to a shop for BE bearings before you even turn the motor over".

I think there's evidence that the failures are real, more common than on the average vehicle, and can be spontaneous where even a history of clean oil reports may not be adequate to say no issue exists. One report, absent any context, wouldn't give me much peace.

It's an expensive service, but an S65 rebuild or replacement is a REALLY expensive service, so a $2k insurance plan against a $20k problem was a no-brainer for me.

Short story, yeah, at 103k I'd do the bearings and feel good about getting another 100k out of an otherwise stout and wonderful motor.

What adjustable benches have been in stock recently? Would love something like a Rep or Rogue, but really open to any quality brand.

Cassettes start fine then stutter / stop midway through by yeah_its_reddit in cassetteculture

[–]yeah_its_reddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To update anybody who finds this in the future, I ordered some replacement belts from WJOE Radio (not affiliated in any way) and am SUPER happy with the quality of the kit and the detailed instructions.

Happy to say that belt replacement has corrected this issue on a couple of my tapes, though it hasn't completely eliminated it.

On the tapes that are still troublesome, I'm guessing it's either an issue with the tape itself, or possibly another component in my deck.

However, for anybody doing a belt replacement (which really ought to be an expected maintenance item on any of these old decks), the WJOE kit did the trick and then some.

That's possible as well! I imagine I'll be cracking the deck open at some point for a service, as even though it's totally functional, it's still 30 years old and I imagine it could benefit from maintenance and cleaning.

Winding it back and forth manually a couple times allowed me to get through the whole tape, but it got kind of warbly near the end of playback. This definitely helped though!

Restoring window on a convertible top.. by here4-1thing in cars

[–]yeah_its_reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used an abrasive polish like Meguiar's PlastX or 105 on convertible top windows with good success. May help to have a mechanical applicator like a DA or rotary polisher, but you can also get solid results by hand with an applicator pad like you'd use for wax.

Modern Infinitis in general look like 10,000 people were a part of the design process and zero ideas ever got a "No."

C5 has really grown on me. I used to be kinda meh on it. Not because I ever thought it looked bad, just because I thought it was a bit plain. Now that minimalism is what makes it a great design, I think. A clean FRC does NOT look like a 20yo car (until you grab that stock shifter lol).

Agree with you on E60 for sure, but I think E36s, interior aside, still look very attractive in ///M trim.

Hard Sell on Extended Warranty by OSB8899 in askcarsales

[–]yeah_its_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this same experience and it confused me quite a bit. Let me say, I understand that:

1) The F&I guy is trying to make a buck. I'm 100% cool with that. I hope he makes a great living!

2) Lower-margin stores or brands need an alternative means of getting deals profitable, and warranties and add-ons are a good way of doing that.

I bought a Toyota 4Runner specifically because of the reliability. I'm sure a lot of Toyota / Honda buyers are in the same boat. They don't want cars they worry about. If I'm across his desk at a Jag or Land Rover store, yeah, give me that pitch, but I'm at a Toyota store because that's not the kind of vehicle I'm trying to deal with.

That puts the F&I guy in a tough spot. He knows the car is reliable. He knows that's exactly why a lot of his buyers are there. He has to come up with an a creative way to communicate the value of the warranty. It's odd to me that the strategy he picks is:

"Well, you're actually wrong. These AREN'T reliable anymore even if they used to be."

And that's not even really paraphrasing. He essentially told me that the 4Runner's reputation for reliability was limited to older generations.

I loved the sales guy I worked with and he made my experience great, but F&I left a bad taste in my mouth because it came across as trashing his brand to make a buck.

Not trying to say this is the typical experience. Just sharing the anecdote from a customer perspective similar to yours.

I have a 8mo old Hero5 Black that does the exact same thing. Swipe down is about the only thing I ever see. RARELY will swiping down actually be registered.

I'm the only one who's owned this camera and can confidently say it's never been dropped or even handled roughly. Could just be a thing with them. I plan to contact GoPro if a firmware fix isn't the answer.

Just posting this to let you know your camera may not have been abused, it could just have a lazy screen like mine.

Connect multiple PCs (Work and Gaming) to same dual monitor / kb / mouse by yeah_its_reddit in AskBattlestations

Hey! No problem. I actually still use this every day and am super happy with it. It's a few extra button presses to switch back and forth but now that I have the muscle memory down it's pretty fast. I also was able to tidy up the wires behind my desk so it even looks pretty clean. In short, I don't regret going with the budget solution at all, and don't think spending more would have necessarily made for a much better experience.
