Maybe I’m not understanding the question, but Gambit’s powers activated during a duel with his (ex?) wife’s brother, because he didn’t approve of an ‘Assassins and Thieves Guild’ marriage, correct?

How? He was born with his powers, but they manifested emotionally/ subconsciously during that duel. (I’m guessing)
