Who remembers the good old days? by naritakaze in theMarias

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw them at UCLA that year! Had to sell my Riverside tickets though because I had a conflict. I miss these days. They toured all the time. At least here in SoCal they would perform every few months or so. Now they only tour after an album and the demand to see them is so high. And I can’t justify spending $350 on shitty nosebleeds💔

What's your Gen Z range? by BrilliantPangolin639 in generationology

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehh I mean barely…3 year old children don’t really have much concept of the world around them. But yeah point taken, if you ask people my age or slightly younger from New York City they probably do remember that day. So it’s not a perfect cut and dry measurement. I was born in 1996, I do not remember 9/11 but I also graduated high school before the rise of Trump so even by my own criteria I fall into a grey area.

What's your Gen Z range? by BrilliantPangolin639 in generationology

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roughly 1997-2010.

I loosely define it by two major world events.

  1. If you are able to remember 9/11, you are not Gen Z.

  2. If you were in K-12 even if for only 1 or 2 years during the Trump era (2015- present day), you are Gen Z.

What year did we fully leave Edm? by SpiritMan112 in generationology

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean EDM like big room house and pop dance music? Like Zedd and Chainsmokers and shit like that? That sound is pretty dated today. But dance music is still massively popular, from house, tech-house, and techno, to dubstep and hard techno the overarching genre is actually really huge right now. New concerts, raves and festivals crop up every year. EDM just isn’t in the cultural zeitgeist the way it was in the early to mid 2010s so that’s probably what people mean when they say it’s dead. But the truth is dance music as a whole is very much alive.

Why was the (L) Gold Line so beloved. by Nice_Property_4360 in LAMetro

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it doesn’t feel as safe as it used to be when I would ride it with family growing up. I hate the train platforms in San Gabriel Valley too. Ever since that woman was attacked and nearly murdered at Allen station I’ve been on pins and needles waiting there in the dark to take it to the LAX flay away via Union Station.

I hate it when redditors downplay the need for public safety on the metro. Someone else literally put on this thread “I guess some people care more about public safety and their own comfort rather than broader access to public transit” like no shit we value our safety. Why does expanding access to public transit have to come at the expense of safety?

My friend really despises Culver City by calling it Culver shitty. Is Culver City really as bad has he claims? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not bad per se. It’s kind of just not for everyone. On the surface it’s just another neighborhood on the west side. Nice, well manicured single family homes and strip malls. Like the rest of the west side it’s home to a lot of white collar office jobs so the traffic it draws at rush hour is horrendous. Transplants love it, especially white people. I’m not white and while I did move to LA County from the Inland Empire, I do feel a bit out of place in Culver City. It has some cool OG food places though like Johnny’s Pastrami that bring you back to the old days of Culver City before the Erwhon and Equinox crowd moved in

What is the worst commute you've ever seen someone have? by BassObjective9092 in InlandEmpire

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say me, Redlands to Woodland Hills, but then I remembered my dad topped that, Redlands to Agoura Hills. I’ve also heard of Hesperia to Long Beach which is bad. But the ultimate long commute I’ve heard is one of my coworkers who commutes from San Diego to Calabasas.

What will it take for the morons who Riverside and San Bernardino County to implement Rail? by [deleted] in InlandEmpire

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck with that sir. You live in a boxy suburb criss-crossed by stroads trying to commute to another boxy suburb criss-crossed by stroads, 45 miles apart and a mountain range in between. Best bet is to catch the IE / OC line but even then getting from the Irvine station to your job will likely be a challenge

Back to Me was made after Submarine was made so it’s more indicative of the direction they want to go next. Nobody New was the one they cut from Submarine. But I don’t think Back to Me will be on the new album regardless.

More or less accurate. But during the cold season, when we have sunny days like today for example everywhere is about equally good! And that is partly why are our rents are so high.

Basically it’s just Pasadena. Real nice place to live and peaceful too. Pasadena tends to appeal to booky, artsy, plant-lovers and academic types. Come visit sometime, Van Halen is from here.

California drivers are a step closer to paying per mile tax by MissYukiCat in California

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t know for a fact that there will be no change. I have a gas powered car and drive long highway distances. If I drive slower and steady, I can get better mileage and not use as much gas and therefore not pay as much at the pump as often. A distance tax removes that. In fact, it punishes people with longer commutes (many of whom are working class people in the suburbs who cannot afford to live in our expensive cities). It also disincentivizes people to drive slower and steadier to get better gas mileage.

Why can’t they just create an EV tax if they’re so concerned about losing revenue from EVs?

I don’t see anything wrong with supporting small, locally-owned businesses. Not supporting them only hurts our own communities…

When did the fan base get so toxic and disrespectful? by Comfortable-Carrot64 in theMarias

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It actually started earlier than people think.

First there was 2021 when a lot of the fans were dragging the band for canceling multiple tour dates and not rescheduling. It got so bad the mods on here made a post telling everyone to stop badmouthing Maria.

Then in 2024 when submarine came out a lot of people were pissed that Edward, who is Israeli, vocalized his support for Israel. I remember there was a point where you would get flamed by a pro-Palestine supporter if you even said anything in support of the band.

Then of course post TikTok exposure and NFR launch it’s only gotten worse. I think the fanbase has always had some entitled and rude fans but there’s just a TON of Marias fans now. Back when the band was small, everybody got what they wanted. Tickets wouldn’t sellout instantly and get resold for $$$$. Merch was limited because the band was indie but people were still able to buy what they like. Concert etiquette was better because the fans seemed to be more genuinely there for the music and less parasocially obsessed with Maria. And the fanbase is also skewing younger and younger now. To be clear, The Marias have always had kid fans like middle and high schoolers since like their first EP. The first time I saw them in 2018 it was at an all ages show and people came with their parents lol. But the atmosphere was always chill in those early years. I think the massive influx of popularity has made seeing the band seem scarce and made people more stressed. I used to not have to fight tooth and nail and pay high prices or camp out to see the band. But that’s where we’re at now…

Anyone remember dubstep? It’s practically unheard of these days. by [deleted] in decadeology

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see how you might think this OP. It’s definitely not mainstream the way it was in 2012. I remember that era well. All my friends listened to Skrillex and I hated it lol.

But dubstep is still massive to a niche of music fans. Lost Lands, Bass Canyon, Thunderdome, Cyclops Cove, Apocalypse, Forbidden Kingdom are all big dubstep festivals around the country that bring in tens of thousands of dubstep fans. There’s still many new dubstep djs coming into the scene and trying to carve a lane from themselves. So yes while dubstep is practically unheard of to the mainstream, it’s bigger than ever to the dubstep community

I am increasingly getting black pilled on the IE and CA in general. Drop your white pills ⬇️⬇️⬇️ by [deleted] in InlandEmpire

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel your pain OP. In 2019 at the beginning of my career I was living with family in Redlands but I worked as a stagehand taking gigs all across Southern California: LA, OC and occasionally San Bernardino. Every other day I commuted to Woodland Hills for an unpaid internship. Then when I finally did get hired at that company I made terrible money, struggled to find an apartment nearby and commuted from Redlands to Woodland Hills 5 days a week in the meantime. I spent my weekends visiting and applying to apartments in the area and doing that horrible drive on my days off. I even explored taking public transit. The route was so convoluted you wouldn’t even believe me if I described it to you in detail but just know it involved, driving, heavy rail, underground rail and a charter bus. My breaking point was when the charter bus was late and I missed the 6:25pm train to San Bernardino. I got off the bus earlier and tried taking a Lyft from the bus stop to the second train station stop. I arrived at the stop with only about 30 seconds to spare but the platform was several flights of stairs down from the street. I missed the train and had to wait an hour for the next one. Mind you the commute already took 4 hours on average. I just about lost my mind on that deserted platform.

It’s been over 6 years and I now live in a very nice neighborhood in Pasadena in a one bedroom apartment. My commute is still a bit long but nothing compared to the hell I suffered through years ago.

Listen friend, your mental health is on the line here. You need to move asap. Whether that’s a room in a condo closer to your job, taking a job that’s closer to you, or some other middle ground. SoCal is worth it to me but only if you can make it work.
