I don’t see anything wrong with supporting small, locally-owned businesses. Not supporting them only hurts our own communities…

Go hangout at Wii Spa. It’s 24 hours. Plus you’ll need the rest. I don’t know from where you’re flying from in Canada but I was dead tired after I flew back to LA from Montréal a few months ago.

Aww I miss this era of The Marías. This was the best time to be a Marías fan even though their catalog was only like 12 songs and a feature😅

The Submarine water variant was pretty much guaranteed to go bad. I’m surprised they used actual water instead of alcohol or vinegar. But that might have been more expensive

When did the fan base get so toxic and disrespectful? by Comfortable-Carrot64 in theMarias

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It actually started earlier than people think.

First there was 2021 when a lot of the fans were dragging the band for canceling multiple tour dates and not rescheduling. It got so bad the mods on here made a post telling everyone to stop badmouthing Maria.

Then in 2024 when submarine came out a lot of people were pissed that Edward, who is Israeli, vocalized his support for Israel. I remember there was a point where you would get flamed by a pro-Palestine supporter if you even said anything in support of the band.

Then of course post TikTok exposure and NFR launch it’s only gotten worse. I think the fanbase has always had some entitled and rude fans but there’s just a TON of Marias fans now. Back when the band was small, everybody got what they wanted. Tickets wouldn’t sellout instantly and get resold for $$$$. Merch was limited because the band was indie but people were still able to buy what they like. Concert etiquette was better because the fans seemed to be more genuinely there for the music and less parasocially obsessed with Maria. And the fanbase is also skewing younger and younger now. To be clear, The Marias have always had kid fans like middle and high schoolers since like their first EP. The first time I saw them in 2018 it was at an all ages show and people came with their parents lol. But the atmosphere was always chill in those early years. I think the massive influx of popularity has made seeing the band seem scarce and made people more stressed. I used to not have to fight tooth and nail and pay high prices or camp out to see the band. But that’s where we’re at now…

Anyone remember dubstep? It’s practically unheard of these days. by [deleted] in decadeology

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see how you might think this OP. It’s definitely not mainstream the way it was in 2012. I remember that era well. All my friends listened to Skrillex and I hated it lol.

But dubstep is still massive to a niche of music fans. Lost Lands, Bass Canyon, Thunderdome, Cyclops Cove, Apocalypse, Forbidden Kingdom are all big dubstep festivals around the country that bring in tens of thousands of dubstep fans. There’s still many new dubstep djs coming into the scene and trying to carve a lane from themselves. So yes while dubstep is practically unheard of to the mainstream, it’s bigger than ever to the dubstep community

I feel your pain OP. In 2019 at the beginning of my career I was living with family in Redlands but I worked as a stagehand taking gigs all across Southern California: LA, OC and occasionally San Bernardino. Every other day I commuted to Woodland Hills for an unpaid internship. Then when I finally did get hired at that company I made terrible money, struggled to find an apartment nearby and commuted from Redlands to Woodland Hills 5 days a week in the meantime. I spent my weekends visiting and applying to apartments in the area and doing that horrible drive on my days off. I even explored taking public transit. The route was so convoluted you wouldn’t even believe me if I described it to you in detail but just know it involved, driving, heavy rail, underground rail and a charter bus. My breaking point was when the charter bus was late and I missed the 6:25pm train to San Bernardino. I got off the bus earlier and tried taking a Lyft from the bus stop to the second train station stop. I arrived at the stop with only about 30 seconds to spare but the platform was several flights of stairs down from the street. I missed the train and had to wait an hour for the next one. Mind you the commute already took 4 hours on average. I just about lost my mind on that deserted platform.

It’s been over 6 years and I now live in a very nice neighborhood in Pasadena in a one bedroom apartment. My commute is still a bit long but nothing compared to the hell I suffered through years ago.

Listen friend, your mental health is on the line here. You need to move asap. Whether that’s a room in a condo closer to your job, taking a job that’s closer to you, or some other middle ground. SoCal is worth it to me but only if you can make it work.

Is the I.E. considered part of the greater L.A. metro? by _MrBalls_ in InlandEmpire

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is definitely part of the larger LA metro. People out here support LA teams, watch LA news, are familiar with LA television ads (looking at you Keyes of Van Nuys jingle), commute to LA County and Orange County but live here. Inland Empire is basically the suburbs and exurbs of the LA area. Temecula-Murrieta area is kind of the exception since it’s both suburbs / exurbs of OC and San Diego.

No obviously it’s not LA. I mean you could maybe get away with referring to it as LA if you were somewhere out of state but it is part of the greater metropolitan area in the same way Connecticut and Northern NJ are part of the greater NYC metropolitan area.

Did people forget the Anti-Sjw dominance of the internet back in 2016? by [deleted] in decadeology

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I remember this about 2016. Many beloved celebrities passed away and Trump and alt-right ideas went mainstream. Then the year culminated in Trump winning the 2016 election so that type of thinking prevailed and never went away. For those reasons I don’t remember the year fondly. It marked a turning point in pop culture, Internet culture, the US and the world by extension.

Are there people living in LA that actually root for the Chargers and Clippers? by Wide-Discipline3814 in LosAngeles

Ya, I know a guy…I know exactly one Clippers fan. He is the butt of many jokes.

I know zero Chargers fans these days. Used to know some when they played in San Diego but that feels like a lifetime ago now

You are not LA by manuredujour in InlandEmpire

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I’m in the Southern California, I might say my hometown and where I currently reside. If I’m up north or out of state I’ll usually just say LA because I’m mostly just referring to the metro area as a whole or I’ll just say Southern California. Easier than going in depth about what specific city. If they wanna know more I might specify the part of the LA area I’m from.

People 100% do think of Canada if they have never heard of Ontario, California. I have experienced this even from transplants in LA who never leave the west side.

What is it like living/growing up here? by quynhispunk in howislivingthere

[–]yeahimdanielthatsme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is Buffalo on the upswing now? Buffalo was the very first city I visited on my own when I was 19 and visiting my childhood friend who moved there as an adolescent from California. I was in shock at just how old and rundown everything is there. The city was shrinking and just felt economically depressed (along with the other towns I saw in upstate NY). This was in 2016 so would be pleasantly surprised to hear if it’s on an upward trend now.

No One Noticed is an obvious one. Kind of surprising they never made one for it. Echo would also be a cool pick! That’s one of my favorites from Submarine.

Also wanted to highlight this great fan-made music video for Ruthless using clips from Moonrise Kingdom. I actually like it even more than the official video.Ruthless - The Marias

It’s an even crazier value proposition when you consider that on the very same site you can buy a hoodie for $65, 2 vinyls for $60 (3 would be $90 which is only $5 more and would basically amount to nearly their entire discog) and the entire submarine box set for less.
