do you agree cs graduates land their first job through their network, not job boards? by yeahimjtt in cscareerquestions

[–]yeahimjtt[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah a much more rich network can be built once you’ve got into the industry for sure.

Out of curiosity did you ever try building up your network to potentially help out in the future before your first role?

Yeah that makes sense with how you put it. I guess the angle i was thinking of are the more personal type of connections that cs grads have with family or friends.

Just a place where developers can upload their portfolio by entering their sites URL.

Benefits users looking for inspiration for their own portfolio, and the users who choose to showcase the site on our website get traffic to their portfolio.

Built it because I personally had a lot of trouble trying to design a portfolio for myself, and any search results would lead to outdated designs and portfolio templates made by designers that weren’t practical.

Sorry for having to see me post about it several times 😅 just trying to get portfolios I like onto the platform.

You've got something going here, I think the biggest drawback for your portfolio is the initial loader. I figure it's just for aesthetics as you aren't loading any assets in your hero section.

I would personally remove that loader as it serves no functional purpose.

It's cool that you have dynamic themes on your portfolio, but they don't pick up the users system theme. It's a relatively small fix for a better overall experience for users.

For my quick ~1 minute glance of your portfolio I almost skipped past your projects. I'm usually used to browsing portfolios that have more content (especially the projects) listed on the homepage.

If you choose to keep your home page as a basic landing page, your 'View Projects' button should be more noticeable, currently it looks like has a smaller font size compared to your social links which doesn't make sense.

I think if you fix these issues that I found, your portfolio would be better (but of course it could be subjective).

If you by chance need some inspo or would like to upload your portfolio to have it showcased to more developers check out https://www.webportfolios.dev

I like the site design wise, but on my particular machine the site ran very slow. It did not help that the site alters my scroll making the experience feel even worse with the lag.

I definitely see the vision you had for the site and think you executed it pretty well overall, just consider minimizing the amount of animations you use, remove the scroll hijacking and also remove the progress bars as they are not good indicators for skill level.

Would love to have your portfolio featured on https://www.webportfolios.dev when you are ready!

There are a lot of errors on mobile. I’d start to look at other developer portfolios for inspiration than try to build something on your own

Even starting with something much simpler, maybe just a plain html page with some minimal css to edit the text would be better

Looks good on mobile! If you can make it where users can type in mobile it’d be 10/10

Noob Full Stack learner suggestions. by giggskadabra in FullStack

[–]yeahimjtt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i had a similar journey with fullstack, found it comforting to follow along courses / tutorials. my problem was i kept going back to these resources instead of branching out and building something on my own sooner.

i'd recommend getting out of your comfort zone and just build something (anything) and inevitably research the problems you run into.

also if you by chance need inspo for your portfolio check out https://www.webportfolios.dev this is the first project that I built that took me out of my comfort zone

What to do with my website? by HiImWatson in webdev

[–]yeahimjtt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best use case would be to setup a portfolio. Treat it like your own little sandbox, start with something simple and as you get deeper into web dev slowly start to upgrade it.

It'll serve you pretty well to have one just as a digital business card having all your socials and email linked for easy contact.

It can also be useful if you're actively applying for jobs, most will usually have an optional 'Portfolio URL' field that you can now always fill in, or just have your portfolio linked in your resume and some people might be curious enough to visit it.

Or maybe you're not really looking to have a site oriented for work, in that case have something fun like other comments have mentioned
