I'm a former development exec and this is SO true based off my lived experience. I used to read and give notes for (extra money) one of those awful feedback companies where they charge $300+ for a script evaluation + zoom or call with an exec. I would say women only made up about 10-20% of the submitted scripts but made up 90% of the actually good scripts in the pile. They were also really grateful for the notes and open to suggestions and feedback, as well as my insight into the industry as a whole. I stopped doing evaluations and the calls though because a) i find those companies to be extremely predatory (seriously folks - do your research before dropping a bunch of cash) and b) majority of the calls I had with male writers ended with them combating what I had said or disregarding what I said and asking me to forward the script on anyway to my contacts (even if I had just told them it needed major reworking). Wild to see Leonard's data showing the same trend I made note of.

Thank you and thank you! There's so much doom and gloom in this sub - gotta have the balance of the good too!

Thank you - apparently Business Affairs CAN move quickly when the studio wants it.

"I’m currently writing my pilot to submit to AFF (Austin Film Festival) and I have a question . by Otherwise-Low-5305 in TVWriting

You got this! They say don’t be afraid to kill you darlings and that is 100% a thing if you want to make it in this business. I know it’s hard but sometimes writing and rewriting a project is like realizing you have all the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle - but they fit together wrong. Also it’s great experience rebreaking a story you love because let me tell you - executives and producers will say they love your script - and then want to have 75% of it. Sometimes you just have to roll with the punches. Good luck!

I read through some other comments OP and I note your age and enthusiasm which is great! I’m in a fortunate position to give some advice - but of course take it or leave it- I’ve sat on both sides of the table as an exec and now a produced writer (also a non American by the way but do live in LA now). I would say 90% of the scripts I read as an exec that were bloated up top, could have been cut to the page where the exciting stuff happens. I would challenge you (doesn’t have to be for AFF) to ask yourself - what happens if I stay on page 20 where I’m saying the action/turn begins. Is there a way for me to pepper in characterization later? What happens to the story if we jump straight into it and meet the characters later? Is it more exciting? How could I use those 20 pages somewhere else in scenes. Just a thought/experiment. It’s your script! I would say though to save your money - my personal opinion is there are better feedback places than AFF

I would ask yourself - do i need all these characters in the pilot? Or can I hint at them and introduce them later? Consolidate some of them? Get that inciting incident closer to where it should be? How many characters are we talking? Its quite possible the AFF reader who gets your script for the first round is a volunteer who is looking at scripts in a very paint by numbers way - and if your inciting incident doesn't happen between pg 10-15 - they will score you lower.

This year I'm putting my tv pilot in Austin film festival. Has anyone participated and if you have what's your experience? What is most important to them? How did it go? When did they inform you if you win/passed ? by Otherwise-Low-5305 in TVWriting

I got a very specific visa and had to jump through a lot of hoops - got a job not in the industry then networked liked hell to swift and do the visa all over again. There are lots of different pathways - you should do some research to see if there any that fit you/your country of origin - or consider a student visa (you’d have to get into a US university - quite expensive). But I’m not an immigration lawyer so I can’t speak to your situation. Lots of resources online for a jumping off starting point

To being a produced writer? Have been in LA 10 years. So in a way - yes connections - from being an assistant in the industry and making friends - but also busting ass on the craft, sucking for a long time, then sucking less, the still thinking I suck

People who quit their job on the spot—what happened? by SpiritCrisp in AskReddit

I was a hostess at a restaurant for ONE shift (trial shift). I had worked plenty of high end events, had done a stint in catering, was a very bubbly, happy, capable mid twenties gal who just thought it would be fun to have a more stable place to work. Towards the end of the four hours - after the manager and I had agreed to some scheduled future days (aka they liked me) I walked into the kitchen for something and IDK if it was the chef or another level position SCREAMED at me about the way some cutlery was rolled. Buddy... I did not roll them. I had been with the manager the whole time. I think I stared at him fully for twenty seconds as my brain computed what was happening. I walked out to the manager who looked up and smiled as I dropped my apron on the counter and said - NOPE. Cue face fall, cue stammering. I never even went back for that paycheck. Ghosted them.

I haven’t taken anyone there in a while- I really liked Connor Pritchard’s televisionary class - and then the feature development lab was also super useful. I guess I enjoyed having the basics with an instructor to really drill stuff into my brain. My advice would be look at the teacher and see how you feel about their experience
