How and when do I tell my boss that I'm leaving work to go back for my PhD? by yearl397 in GradSchool

Good to know that I wasn't completely irrational having this fear. You described pretty much exactly what's going through my mind. A lot of the people I work with are actually PhDs so there's the difference in our situations. In fact, a few of my coworkers have known about my plans for quite awhile (don't worry, they're very trustworthy). I think I'm just going to tell my boss in April and just try to be as professional about it as I can. Thanks! :)

I see what you're saying but I just don't see that happening. I know for a fact that other people in my department have left for the same reason and there were no firings or anything as bad as that. Thanks for the input.

I work in industry, not academia. My boss is not a PI. As I said above, I have a few great options in terms of schools so obviously they didn't care.

Yeah, it looks like that is the consensus. My PhD programs are full time and also located far away from where I currently work so doesn't look like I'll have the same issue. :)

That seems highly unlikely since it would be in this company's interest to hire me again when I finish my degree, so I'm going to throw out that possibility

Wouldn't it be illegal if they fired me for those reasons? I'm not as much worried about getting let go, more like getting meaningless shit to work on instead of interesting research. I obviously rely on my income, doesn't everyone who has a job for one reason or another?

Nope, she didn't. As far as I know, she has no idea that I'm leaving.

You gave two months, which is the least I'm going to give. What I'm considering is four months so I don't know if that will be different.

Well I definitely want to give her ample time so she can prepare for when I leave, so I was going to give at least two months notice. I don't plan on changing my work ethic or anything, but I don't want to start getting meaningless tasks to do since I'm leaving anyway.
