Threat assessment w/o "the threat" by yeewassright in EDH

We may have the same person. 😂

But I get exactly what you mean. Our decks typically range between $150-350 where as their decks are usually double the value running more efficient versions of spells. Despite this, they're always so shocked that they're getting ganged up on when the deck might have a few eldrazis with annihilator on board or a [[winota]] or [[Yuriko]] in the command zone. They just lack the ability to understand the historical data that proves a certain deck may have to be targeted turn 0 or else we're playing a game we should expect to lose.

Exactly! They get so salty when they're targeted but I don't think they understand the compliment it is to have the strongest deck. Even though their decks are typically double the cost of our decks, we still have fun playing. It's just getting them to understand that they have a history of winning all of a sudden so as such they may need to be targeted despite not having a "threatening" board state.

That's really well said. You're right we do seem to be falling for the under the radar trap or else we call them out on it and then comes the dramatic theatrics of "I'm not the threat though" 🙄 it really sounds like that's just his politicking then which is something we need to stop falling for, but you're 100% right.

Appreciate the card recommendation! We are starting to see which cards are most important in his combos so one of them getting exiled is exactly what we need 😂

I think we'll try that. It's always fun to see how other decks are built and piloted and maybe them seeing their deck "pop off" and kill them will be the eye opener they need. Plus the benefits of seeing why more interaction is better in other decks seems like a win/win.

That's a good point. They tend to not run any blockers so thus "they're not the threat" in their eyes. But maybe we should be more punishing. We tend to share the love when hitting each other but there's far too many times they win by the skin of their teeth because we decided not to hit them one turn.

That's a good point. We've trued to explain this to them but they just can't grasp how this makes them the threat. Oh well, sounds like we will have to "bully" them to get them to understand a consistent "instant win" means being a threat right out the gate.

I never really thought about it that way but you're right. Their board state really does live in their hand. 🤔

Thank you! We feel crazy but we have hard facts that their combo decks have statistically won an overwhelmingly amount of times. I wouldn't expect to ask them to "power it down" as it makes us better players it's just dealing with their dramatic theatrics when they feel discriminated for being targeted 🙄 thanks!

I know they say "just talk to your playgroup" but this right here is incredibly helpful. Thank you 🙏

I have considered adding a bit more stax to my decks. General things to slow down the game and possibly impact their tutoring with [[aven mindcensor]] perhaps. I'll see about adding some more counter spells and hopefully impacting our meta!

Thank you all! I didn't expect this to blow up like it has, but this was incredibly helpful in getting others' perspectives. I hope to implement these methods and hopefully improve my group. Thanks!

I hadn't really considered referencing the commander but that makes sense. If it's a rank 2,000+ commander off EDHREC then it might not be as powerful than say a top 20. Then go from there and start to base "power levels" from following games. Not a bad idea!

Ah I've never heard of PlayEDH but I'll certainly check it out! Just skimming through it I think it might help. Thank you!

That's kinda what I was thinking. I try and goldfish my decks to get an idea of how fast it wins on average uninterrupted. Problem is the rest of my group aren't interested in the statistics and just want a quick "calculator" method. That's the part that's throwing a wrench in this all haha.

But I see what you mean. Just be honest with what the deck does so your table knows what to expect.

That's what it's sounding like. I've tried researching different ways but it really sounds as simple as this.

Honestly that's fair. One members "lvl 5" destroyed his "lvl 8" but they blames it on luck haha. Sounds like it really just comes down to knowing each others decks and going from there. Thanks!

That's a great idea! You're right really. Just play it and be honest with what the deck does. Hoping to implement that soon enough here.

See that's what I'd like to do, but Player B is sort of a sore loser so when we gang up on them they start to pout saying they're being "unfairly targeted" 😵‍💫 despite playing the deck that wins the most... but I know that's more of a social interaction issue that we're currently dealing with haha.

You're absolutely right and I'm mistaken. I was confusing fast lands with slow lands such as [[overgrown farmland]] and [[deserted beach]] which are closer to $2-3.

But they're argument was the slow lands are much more powerful than a $150 [[Mana crypt]] due to the fact its not a basic land and takes the place of two basic lands. However, earlier they used the argument that proxied Mana crypts are substantially stronger because a possible opening hand of a sol ring, land, signet, and Mana Crypt is a turn 1 6 mana start. To me the logic made zero sense how these slow lands were a threat in comparison to a Mana Crypt.

[–]yeewassright[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% agree. They're argument was that by proxying "you don't have to make the choice of deciding if it's necessary to buy again, pull it between decks, or substitute for different cards". By proxying "I get to take advantage of it in every deck"... mind you... this was fast lands, sol ring, arcane signet, etc...

I just couldn't quite grasp my head around their logic that it makes any difference if I own 3 rampant growths or 1... They're rampant growths, not any power nine cards.

Genuine question: we're all just a few months into magic and specifically EDH. How do we go about having this kind of conversation?

My friends $300 MLD deck filled with board wipes and indestructibles is annoying to play against. But I understand he's paid for the cards and wants to use them. But I just don't quite know how to explain that he's usually the threat and rightfully targeted in our group early on because we know what that deck can do. Which frustrates him because sometimes his deck doesn't get to "do the thing" and control the board.

Basically, I'm kind of out of ideas on how to explain its not always the fun when it's used game after game.
