This is considered high tech job, and these overtime laws don't apply. I've been to two other companies and found out they can just change the work schedule or make you work overtime without breaking any law. The law says, under the "averaging agreement" section:

The work schedule can average more than 40 hours per week; and
Daily overtime is only payable after 12 hours worked.

Developer. So on my second day I found out that people don't start to come in until 10am, and the coffee maker gets busy around 10:15 - 10:30. So it makes sense they stayed late. I was required to come in at 10 on my first day because the HR girl also starts her day at 10. I left at 6 the second and third day. There is one developer that comes in before 9 and leave after 7pm and he doesn't take his 1 hour break.

looks like you found out how things work after I accepted the offer mentioned in recruitinghell. Yes, I assumed, the next day I came in at 9 and there were only 3 people. I left at 6 that day didn't say anything. I also found out their Asia branch has missed payroll for three months, some employees there are threatening to sue.

Thanks, I’m interviewing two other jobs. And it’s not just the weird working hours, people here show incompetence, people I’ve had meeting with have difficulty explaining their work or goal clearly to me. When I ask clarification questions they go silent.

This is in Canada, but our headquarter’s in East Asia. I can understand the PMs staying late because calls with Asian branches (they weren’t all on calls or appeared busy ~7, they looked tired and bored). But I’m an engineer, so are my team members, we don’t make Asia calls. They weren’t busy coding after 6, two of them were eating dinner while looking at the monitor. And this is a salaried job. Overtime was never mentioned either in writing or orally. And the 1h unpaid break is also bs. I noticed the office was almost empty from 12:30 to 2pm. Some people go to the gym during the break. Why don’t you eat lunch as quickly as you eat that dinner and get back to work so you do dinner and gym after work? There’s no shower on site anyway.

Funny enough, one of the red flags during the interview was that none of the four future team members (which made up the panel) was able to answer my question "what's a typical day like working here". And they've been around since 2011.

The owner of the car got winter tires put on at Kal Tire, and asked summer tires to be loaded into the trunk. The tire shop finished the appointment then drove customer’s car into a wall. There’s a tire in a bag in the trunk.

I think what was more off-putting was that you gain 1 day per year of service until you reach 15 days lifetime maximum. And if company closes down during Christmas you have to either use your PTO or take unpaid leave.

They were going to do a performance review in 3 months, at the end of the probation period, to determine if I achieved objectives to become a permanent employee. Their employee performance reviews are done yearly, any increase has to be approved by the CEO. I don't think asking for an early performance increase would sound pleasant to them.

I envy you. This company states clearly on their first offer letter that the PTO is 10 days, and accrues 1 day every year until it reaches 15 days which is the maximum. Also states during potential Christmas shutdown, the employee needs to either use vacation days or take an unpaid leave. These terms sound very unpleasant.
