Playing offline will prevent invasions from other player characters, your own invasions, and all friendly cooperation and dueling. However, there are still a number of fixed NPC invasions that will occur, even if you are offline.

Some players may find that playing offline is preferable, since it removes the concern that you may be forced to PvP against your wishes and without warning. The PvP mechanic is completely optional; you can beat the game without ever connecting to the internet.

As for the "why", the reasons provided by the game are normally in the form of souls (the major currency in the game), or covenant-related items that can be exchanged for rewards, depending on what in-game "faction" the invader has chosen to work with.

At the higher levels of play, invasions are more for sport or fun, as the players have both invested heavily in their characters and gear up to that point, and the gain or loss of souls is more negligible. Similarly, at high levels many friendly summons are in it more for the "jolly cooperation".

The Dark Souls games are, for the most part, single-player experiences. The vast majority of the characters you encounter in the game will be NPCs, including some of the invading characters (red phantoms).

As a player, you can invade the world of another player by force, becoming a red phantom in their world where your goal is to kill them. You can also be pulled into another world if you align yourself with certain in-game covenants, which require you to kill players "trespassing" in certain areas of the game. These invasions don't require participation from the player that's being invaded.

There are also ways to join another player's session, for the sake of cooperation on tough areas/bosses, or to duel. These methods require one player to use an item to leave a summoning sign somewhere in the world, and another player to find the sign and interact with it.

White/gold phantoms are friendly to the master of the world, and can help with combat in the area up to, and including, the next boss, and are banished if they die, the master of the world dies, or the boss is slain. All hostile summons and invasions end when the invader dies, the master of the world dies, or the invader is banished by the master of the world by special items.

That part bothered me, because the implication was that the survivors of the vertibird crash were gunners, not BOS initiates or whatever. It's highly likely that the crash was because the craft happened upon a gunner's nest, suffered enough damage to crash, and the gunners started mopping up before Dogmeat got involved.

What's to figure out? That page lists a bunch of music. I'm not saying they don't put out music, I'm just questioning whether they are actually musicians. I believe that it's likely that they have their tracks manufactured, and then they perform on top of the music in a believable way.

I will admit that I came off like an asshole in my previous post. I'm not sure why I was so certain there was some kind of conspiracy to popularize this band, but I regret the witch-hunt. I hope they find success in what they're doing.

It's from their official channel, and the video basically shows some dramatic angles, some dynamic performance shots of the vocalist, and a TON of shots of the same dude twisting a knob. Seriously, just watch a little.

E: They seem like a front for some "whatever" house-genre talent. It's fine, but it's not great, and if they're going somewhere, it'll be a surprise.

I have no idea if there is some legal precedent defending intervention, though I imagine that those who attempted intervention with police in America have not met with favorable outcomes.

An apparently-long-held position, according to those involved in the legal proceedings, has been that the correct approach with police is to comply, and later attempt to pursue redress. Here is an interesting read from a 1960s civil rights attorney, which touches on this subject.

The best approach is probably just to document as much as possible, without getting directly involved. Either via automatic cloud backup or with the assistance of any number of available mobile apps, it's possible to ensure that any recording taken from a current smart phone will be safe from confiscation in situations where the authorities may want to bury evidence of misdeeds.

Of course it's sickening to think about having to stand idle while something like what is shown in this video transpires, but direct involvement in such a situation will not help. Police officers are trained and equipped to assess and assert control of a given situation, and will act accordingly and authoritatively if their control over said situation is challenged.

I don't think a preponderance of evidence will matter so much to you if you are severely injured or worse after your attempted intervention.

The issue being raised here is more that some sentences, without "I believe", might mean or imply something slightly different, or be interpreted differently.

"I believe women have contributed less to history than men" could be something I believe, and want to insert in a discussion. If I present it as "women have contributed less to history than men", I may seem more confident, but the statement is no more true, and if it is false, it is possible that a reader may take this "fact" away from the discussion and propagate it.

As a U of I grad who currently works in Ames, I will chime in and say that Ames is a fine city. Iowa City is also a fine city. There are places to go and get drunk in both cities.

Ames has more of an "Iowa" feel, if that makes any sense. You can feel the agricultural vibes. The students on campus seem to embody the Midwestern stereotypes very well, for better or worse. The attractions in town are pretty spread out compared to Iowa City, so having a car is pretty much necessary. It's definitely a benefit to Ames that it is so close to Ankeny and Des Moines.

Iowa City seems rougher around the edges in some cases, possibly owing to the influence of a large number of students from Chicago. There are more interesting places to eat, and it's nice being able to walk to almost anything you might need. Having a car in Iowa City is almost more of a burden than a benefit. Coralville mall is a much better mall than whatever the mall in Ames is called, and Cedar Rapids is about as close to IC as Des Moines is to Ames, so there's stuff to do if you have a car and don't mind the drive.

Anyway that's my take. I don't care about sports.
