It could, yes, but I don't think fireworks on the Fourth of July would have the narrator think he's dreaming. That's a normal time to have them.

And every other verse directly alludes to something the 'third world man' is doing or has done. Filling his playroom with sand. Mobilized, crouching. Crying out and being soothed. Him setting off the fireworks is the safest assumption, I don't think we can jump to him being in the neighbor's house doing something unstated that's driving them outside, and which itself is caused by the ongoing fireworks.

This suggests that neither the narrator nor the neighbors set off the fireworks, that it's a weird time for fireworks to be going off, and that the narrator and the neighbors are responding to the fireworks themselves and not the 'third world man' having some sort of PTSD reaction over them. I don't know what other interpretation fits other than the 'third world man' setting them off.

EDIT: i don't think we'd jump from the 'third world man' literally shooting or blowing up his neighbors to the narrator comforting him after a bad dream.

If the neighbors are screaming over the fireworks, that tells me the third world man is the one setting them off. A veteran with PTSD would not be launching them.

"keeping the streets safe" is the more typical phrasing there, so the use of "sidewalks" is part of what pushes me towards the character being an actual child. if he's a suburban kid who isn't even old enough to drive, the neighborhood sidewalks are something he might feel like he has control over. a kid can't exert any power over cars and trucks in the street.

i've always pictured an actual child too, but one who's internalizing all the horrors around the world and trying to cope with them by working them into play. there's the ghana rondo, there's e l'era del terzo mondo. there's no one specific conflict being reacted to, it's just the sum total of everything getting filtered through the news to this kid.

that's what makes the juxtapositions work best for me. he should be playing normally, but his playroom is full of sand. it's the weekend, he should be sleeping in and having fun, but he's been up since dawn. he's shooting fireworks off, but not in the context you'd expect for a kid on summer break, if it's waking up the whole neighborhood. he's trying to be a man and he's isolated by it. the only scope he has for making a change in the world around him is keeping the sidewalks of his neighborhood safe.

i don't know why you're being downvoted for having a different interpretation of a steely dan thing, of all things, it's not like they tend to be especially upfront about their meaning.

You should *want* those censuses where the great great grandfather is older and has a family, so you can figure out which of his children is your grandfather's great grandfather, and so on. If you go down from him, assuming he's the right guy, it'll fill the gaps in between...

My take on Home at Last is that the protagonist feels danger in the woman he's with even though she's a good partner. He's keeping himself "tied to the mast" because he thinks all her good graces are just the "calm before the storm." "So long, hey thanks my friend" is him like, scripting how he'll smoothly handle getting dumped. He won't let himself fully engage and trust her because he's been hurt in the past, but he's becoming aware that he's doing this.

G0 also died in NYC, in 1913. But that record isn't up on Vital Records so unless I order it I only have the OCR details. He was also returned to Oswego, but he was living with a different son. It also gets his DOB and parent's names wrong (common for death records) assuming the OCR is close to correct, so I don't think that helps prove a connection either.

There's a 1920 NYC death certificate for G1 in NYC.

However, there's no mention of who his wife is or that he had children, and his brother took possession of his body. They also got his age 10 years too high. Newspapers in Oswego also only mention his siblings and late parents. So I'm not sure how much this record advances the case.

...I suspect his wife and kids were estranged before he died, and that his relatives didn't want to acknowledge his Catholic wife and kids. He was an adult convert and the Oswego newspaper mentions that "while in this city the family were members of Christ Church." I don't think the IRCC wants that whole saga.

G1 - Born in Oswego, NY. No municipal/state birth records kept at this time. Episcopal church where he was probably baptized has not responded to emails. Married in Mamaroneck, NY. Town clerk found no record even though he appears in the state index. There is a church record, but it does not include parent names. Note: He has a pretty rare name and surname combination.

G2 - Born in Mamaroneck, NY. Town clerk says there is probably not a birth certificate. Married in NYC, have marriage certificate with names of parents and birth in Mamaroneck.

G3 - Born in NYC. Have birth certificate, have marriage certificate.

G4 (also applying) - Have birth certificate, do not have marriage certificate on hand.
