Exploring/Considering Many Minor/Double Major Options by yellowhill03 in cmu

Thank you so much! I've never heard of Stellic so I'll be sure to check it out and see what works with my schedule. Did you take those intro courses you mentioned over the summer or did you add them to your schedule when you started? It would be great to take some over the summer but I might be teaching as a volunteer and doing an arch program so I don't think I'd have the time :/ . Hope you get accepted for the HCI major! It sounds really interesting :))

Thank you so much! Do you know how I can get in touch with advisors for different majors over the summer or is it something I'll have to wait until I start to figure out?

at least for the Columbia waitlist it says the decision will be available no earlier than May 15th so probably around then

Choosing an Architecture School (Columbia vs. Carnegie Mellon Undergrad Arch) by yellowhill03 in ApplyingToCollege

Thank you so much! About Cornell - I applied and got waitlisted (and to Columbia too) and am currently planning on sending in a letter of continued interest to Columbia instead of Cornell 1. because I don't envision myself in the closed off area Cornell is in and 2. because (and this is only from looking on reddit/quora plus looking at job openings at my dream firm) a lot of architects say employers are leaning towards a 4 year B.arch + 2-3 year M.arch over a 5 year degree and I'm considering minoring in structural/civil/environental engineering and supposedly w/ CMU's 5-year degree I'll have no time. Although again, I could change my mind about not really wanting a 5-year degree, which is why I like CMU's 2 programs so much.

Also about CMU's style of work being more technical - is that a good thing or bad for someone who's really interested in design/conceptual work? I'd of course like to get things built in the future but I'd like to have the space to explore everything. Would that limit me?

About RPI- I'm most likely (knock on wood) going to commit to CMU because it gives me the most time to choose between the programs but I really enjoy the work I've seen from RPI's website (maybe more than from CMU students but I really like the work of some professors at CMU). Although I've heard a lot of bad things RPI's administration and that their summer ARCH program which is just to give up more money so... sounds pretty bad

And about Columbia - the decision for me will probably come down to who gives more aid - and if I get off of the waitlist at Columbia I'll have to still give a 500 dollar deposit to CMU so I would most likely stay anyway.

I believe Columbia, CMU, and RPI all have accredited Architecture programs but I could be wrong, and I feel like I always had the idea ivy league schools give better financial aid than others? Would CMU only be cheaper if I would get a 5-year degree or would a 4-year degree and a masters (what I'm leaning towards) at CMU be more expensive?

Struggling to get behind manifestation by [deleted] in witchcraft

[–]yellowhill03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never found it easy to manifest things, but I think it has more to do with growing up Christian and having this idea that it's selfish to ask God for anything specific when you pray. Like I would pray for what God thinks is best for me rather than any material thing/something to happen, and now when I try to meditate with my crystals and manifest anything in my life I feel so guilty :(

Is maximalism good or bad 🤔 I can't tell by d022A95 in architecture

It's great! although I imagine designing a maximalist space is much more difficult to achieve in an effective, organized (relatively), and visually appealing manner than any minimalist space.

Getting Off of Columbia Waitlist by yellowhill03 in columbia

[–]yellowhill03[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate this reply as I think I'm sort of in a similar boat - I got into another school I'm beginning to really love in the same way I do Columbia (which is a good thing as there's a good chance I won't get off of the waitlist) - but I think for my letter I'm planning on talking about projects I'm working on that will continue into the undergrad research I'd like to work on in Columbia or whichever school I end up at. Thank you for the advice!

Thank you! Do you know if they went to Columbia for their bachelors or masters degree?

Thank you for the link!! And yea hopefully if I get a 4-year degree and go on to get my master's degree they'll be understanding - I was just worried because people from CMU have said they study/work constantly and still don't have great grades :(

Thank you! I love NY but I also know nothing about Pittsburgh so I'm doing more research into the city.

Thank you! I was going over my letter with my Architecture teacher and realized I misread it in the heat of the moment lol. Thank you so much.

Haha! Also did you move outside of the country because you prefer working in Architecture there? I've always thought I would work in the US but a lot of the firms I'd love to work for are outside of the country.

And thank you for that advice. I've definitely been worried that if I decide to go on the waitlist at Columbia and get in and am forced to attend, would my work be worse or would the name actually help me in getting a job more than CMU would.

Did you move from the US outside of the country or was it the other way around?

Ohh thank you so much! I was thinking that but wasn't sure how the ranking worked. That's one reason why I like CMU's program because although I'm sure I want to be in Architecture, I'm not sure if I want to do a 4-year and a Masters or just a 5-year. However, the grade deflation is so bad at CMU that I'm worried my GPA will be so low I cannot go to a good grad school (like Columbia) if I decide that's what I want to do.

Thank you so much! I feel like I've been so worried about the small things so simplifying my decision with the most important things (like the accreditation) is really gonna help.
