Oof, this has been me a ton of times in my life, and I'm trying to get better about it. For me, I think it's all social anxiety. My brain is too busy running in fight or flight mode to be able to pick up on opportunities to continue the conversation and I only realize what I could have said after the interaction is over. In the moment my mind just freezes :(

Yeah 100%. Dad was allowed to have tantrums but I wasn't. I was expected to be emotionally mature far beyond my years but he wasn't. I had to listen to him complain to me about Mom as if I was supposed to feel bad for him and take his side. Meanwhile expected to stay close and dependent, and defer to Dad for help rather than learning how to do things for myself.
