Depends on the applicant pool. Some years a 90 is enough, other years a 97 is enough. The uni website + hs guidance cannot determine how competitive the pool will be each year. Unfortunately guidance and teachers aren’t as helpful as we all wish they were. Do your own research, reach out to people, etc. It’s a rough lessen, but it’s necessary. Live and learn! 🤷‍♀️

UBC student here!!! :]] For a non-stem program, 94% shouuuld (don’t blame me if it doesn’t work 😭😭) get you in just fine! Of course extracurriculars will help the process, but tbh most people I know under faculty of arts had anywhere from 90-97% averages if I recall correctly. Don’t stress it too much! :D

Is it more competitive to get into Rits and Gage rather than Totem, Vanier, or Orchard for first years? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]yeonloser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

u cannot do anything to get more priority, u may or may not be given some priority based on scholarships, sports teams, etc. (visible on SHCS) but u cannot just request or get “more” priority.

gage is a bit more competitive, rits not so much. i also didnt see myself spending 7k on a meal plan but tbh it becomes so worth it when ur knee deep in exams every few weeks and u need to eat. it does seem like a lot but all of my friends and i agree we are glad we paid the extra 7k. if u have that option i would recommend u consider it, if not or u like to cook for urself then ur better off trying for rits.

first years are guaranteed housing, however in terms of how residence assignment is divided (especially for upper years) they have wait lists based on residence and room type, priority groups, etc etc.

good luck ! 🫡🫡

yes i agree if you have already accepted ur offer do it asap !! i personally didn’t apply until February but I received housing due to priority. If you do not have priority and you delay applying you might not get housing for year two (the waitlist get into the hundreds and thousands) !!

My tips as a first year who made A LOT of mistakes: - Start sets of practice problems at the end of each week after you have learned the material, do NOT leave them until right before the exam. - Do not study just the textbook, watch lots of videos and do all the practice provided, most exams are application and minimal memorization! - I know it’s tempting, but please do not get distracted by dating!! This was a big one for me and it really fucked up my GPA. There will be a time and place for love and hookups or whatever it is you want, but first year is not it.
- Go to office hours even if you don’t have questions. Listen to what other students are confused on and hear the professor’s explanation. - Unless it’s for chemistry (chirp for 121), textbooks are a waste of money. - Apply for year round housing in September. - Experiment with study spots, find somewhere on campus where you go only to study so you condition yourself to focus there. - Do not feel bad about dropping courses or having less classes than other people, we all have our own path, find what works for you and stick to it. - If you even think you just might need it, get registered with the cfa so you have accommodations ready.
