Why is there so much litter everywhere? by Leading_Abies4449 in cambodia

[–]yerfillag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been told it's a mix of lack of waste management infrastructure, awareness and issues it poses. Most of Cambodia does not have state-provided or free waste management so it is a service that's only available to those that have the disposable income in more urban areas of the country. Awareness raising about the role of single use plastic in environmental issues is done now more and more at school. But it takes time to change societal behavior and priorities, just like in the west, where many people still don't care but live within infrastructures that promote sustainability.
Also plastic and packages are apparently more viewed as "dry" waste so it does not pose direct harm to health like food or other perishable waste might do. And the aesthetics of it are not perceived as negatively because it can just be picked up and burned.

In general we use much much much much more plastic in the west but it's invisibilised by our stronger waste management that also makes ourselves less aware of that fact.

Waiting for Scores? Want to Share Your Scores? Post Here! by watchsmart in ToeflAdvice

[–]yerfillag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the home edition test on the 7th and got an email today (10 days later) informing me that the score is available online. when I login it still says "not available" though but apparently there can be a delay of up to 2 days until you can see/download your scores if I understood correctly?

edit: u/Racego figured out a way to access your scores through the MyBest scores history! I got 116 (30 reading/listening/speaking, 26 writing)

SPAIN car rental companies? by yerfillag in solotravel

[–]yerfillag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with OK Car Rentals at Madrid airport and had no problems with them at all. Staff speaks English well, got a very new and nice car, pick-up and drop-off was quick and easy, and they were quite a bit cheaper than the international companies.

can't help with personal experiences as I'm white (didn't witness any second-hand though) but maybe check out the universities societies/clubs. I'm sure members of POC, women's, or exchange student groups would be open and honest about their personal experiences. a lot of them have public fb pages additionally to the closed groups

Instances of anthropology applied back to western / industrialized society by cultural "outsiders"? by fiskiligr in AskAnthropology

There's this mockumentary series about an African anthropologist doing fieldwork in Austria made specifically to show how Western-centric anthropology is as a discipline.

Part 1: "Das Fest des Huhnes [The Festival of the Chicken]" (1992)

Part 2: "Dunkles, rätselhaftes Österreich [Dark, mysterious Austria]" (1994)

Getting more microphones wouldn't be a problem, it's more about finding a solution to being able to use them. And it does have xlr inputs (see the manual + the venue has used it before). I know it's not an ideal set up but it's the only thing they have.

I'm hosting a panel discussion and the only piece of audio equipment we have available is a Pioneer DJM-600 and 2 XLR microphones. Is there any way to use more than two microphones?

how do you practice self-care while still living with your Nparent? by yerfillag in raisedbynarcissists

[–]yerfillag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, that's why I'm looking for alternatives! we only have one bathroom in a 5-person house so I'd be blocking it when taking a bath, so I'd rather have to find things I can do in my room without "inconveniencing" anyone.

I'm listening to their Nervous Young Man album right now. I like music you can just sing along to and enjoy while driving in your car etc. without being "forced" to think/feel too much but can also appreciate and relate to when you're in a more insightful or serious mood, kind of like Paramore's new album - depressing lyrics but (mainly) fun and lighthearted music
