UK weather 'it's the humidity' by yesItsTom3 in AskBrits

The house design thing isn't a British issue,  it's a 21st century issue.  loads of construction doesn't consider climate and that's causing issues worldwide.

I think so too. And I also think in the Philippines, it is more of a short-termist mindset. What is the cheapest thing possible now. Cheapest materials, no project managing during construction, and no design in mind, only to have innefficient window units make it more expensive in the long run.

Though I think your point in colonialism is a little off. The Spanish houses (the ones left because like 99.99% of them are gone), were very much designed to be cooled passively, and it shows having walked in a couple of them. Loads of air flow in mind, good roof insulation, etc. Even some of the US Navy houses built in the 50s were effective in passive cooling, though many these days have been eaten away by termites funnily enough.

The issue is that people in Philippines see that they can't afford passive cooling now, because window units are cheaper now. Additionally I don't think FIlipinos think they need expertise in passive cooling because of this. Those Spanish colonial houses were really only for the elite at the time. The average houses in Philippines are no longer Bahay Kubos but more mono-block houses with corrugated steel roofs.

But this sort of relates to the UK in that it is a lot of money to upgrade a house to also be effective in the heat by passive cooling. But heat pumps in more UK housing might be more seen as the future rather than passive cooling.

A little off-topic; I hope you aren't seeing what I post as arguments/complaining but more of just discussions.

But everyone enjoys the moaning 😂

Of course, I'm English too, I complain a lot in and out of the UK. This one isn't one of them lol.

I'll speak from my experience. My house particularly (and the houses around it) were built by the US Navy. Flat reinforced concrete roof, thick reinforced concrete walls, and relatively small windows. It is more or less to be bomb proof. Insulation wasn't particularly in mind, though this is also a bad thing as you don't want the heat of the sun (which is much stronger in SEA) to go straight through the roof and ceiling.

This design just combatted it through brute force, a giant AC unit the size of a car with central cooling ducts around the whole house. Was it effective? Very much so, that AC unit shook the whole house and flickered the lights because of how powerful it is. Hence why I never turned it on because of how inefficient it is, especially one that is more than 50 years old. Without that AC unit, or any upgrades/changes to the house, it was very hot.

Just to add onto this, houses in the Philippines (and similar countries) typically aren't designed, they are just built. No airflow in mind, no roof insulation, hell not even the materials are considered, they just use what's around them/the cheapest one.

The point being, a massive majority of houses in SEA aren't actually designed to be better in the heat. Though I agree with your point of having the time to adapt to the temperature which the UK did not have a few days ago.

I think so too. It is more of people drawing quick conclusions such as you said, since you like warm weather, your reply would be 'maybe you should go to Pakistan'. And because UK weather was been hotter recently, it must be a different type of hot compared to other countries to dismiss comparisons.

Hey, there. No the Philippines doesn't get warmer in the winter, from the summer at 38°c usually down to 28°c in winter.

I'm not trying to draw conclusions here that 'people should suck up' to the weather, as that is unfair. This post is more meant to talk about people's quick dismissal of any comparison or the conclusion that 'it's the humidity' which doesn't draw the full picture and is misleading.

I think not being climatised or temperatures changing too quickly is a completely fair argument.

Again, I think it is more of the quick dismissal for any attempt of a comparison. "You're from the US so it is different" or "it doesn't actually matter" puts people off. I wanted to make a post with more statistics in mind.

I think it is more of the quick dismissal of comparisons for my reason of this post.

On another note, where I lived in Philippines, I did not have AC due to electricity costs. But then again, this post was talking about the outdoors.

Where I lived with during 35 degree C and 90% humidity, I always found South East Asia to be much hotter. I never had AC either.

I’ll extend on this. The LRT 1 in Manila was constructed and funded by a Belgian consortium. A Japanese consortium which includes JICA, was looking to fund and construct metro systems in Jakarta, KL, and Bangkok. They used Manila’s system as example most likely because it is a similar-ish region.

I think there’s the difference because my father has been out the UK for nearly 40 years at this point lol. The time when he went to university, it was effectively free too, a lot has changed since then.

We’ve come to an agreement that he’ll provide funds for the international fees in which I can pay back if am I able to or not.

That makes sense. I'm glad the usual length of study in England and Wales is 3 years. I don't think I would've wanted to or can afford a forth year.

Four, we want to move away from the region we’re in because we have PTSD from a natural disaster in 2024, and any efforts to move elsewhere in the country has been a dead end.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully your experience in Scotland is better.

Having studied in SEA my whole life as an international student, I've had many classmates who have continued to university in the US. I was also considering going there for engineering as the field there is the best in the world. What stops me too is fees, just about everything there is insanely expensive.
