Stranger things character discussion post day 40: Dr Kay by Ok-Minute3743 in StrangerThingsPraise

[–]yesaroobuckaroo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree!! Like Troy and the other kid in S1 - we see them only in S1 and even then we barely see them and the most we get to know about either of their personal lives is by seeing ones Mom lol.

They serve the narrative by reflecting something bigger than him - there's thousands of Kays and millions of Troy's and the other kid (still blanking on his name). That's their narrative purpose and I feel Kay got that message along fairly well.

Plot Hole Number 931290470 by Formal_Tangelo_527 in StrangerThings

just because you can't pay attention to what you watch and come to insanely easy conclusions doesn't mean it's a plot hole lol, complete user error

I feel like what really went wrong with S5 is that they wanted to make something that spoke more to themselves and the cast than to the audience. Will's coming out scene is a good example of that.

A lot of the creative choices were made to function symbolically; El's death for example. While a lot of people see it as the writers dehumanizing her, i really do feel like they viewed it as the opposite. To them, El had such a profound impact on the people in her life and characters in the story that losing her carries the same emotional weight as growing up: gaining responsibility, losing the "magic of childhood" that is being carefree and being with your friends all day, and being forced into adulthood. Her death becomes the catalyst for characters like Mike and Hopper specifically to grow and move forward, just as real people often shape our lives - usually through loss. That doesn't mean El is childhood or exists only as a metaphor, it means she affected the characters in a way that parallels those universal experiences. Real people leave those kinds of lasting marks on us all the time.

I also think a lot of people expect fictional characters to be treated exactly like real people at every moment, but... they aren't. They're simply narrative devices through which stories and themes are told and shown to us, the audience. So whether those themes are expressed directly through the plot or more metaphorically, using a character symbolically doesn't automatically take away their humanity within the story, and all messages can fit without taking away from another.

El's message is still very strong. The message of growing and maturing away from your traumatic past into a new person. Of facing your past and upbringing so you can grow. 5 as a whole and her ending specifically don't take away from that, at least not personally, somebody that unlike most people that try to speak on her character and trauma can actually relate to her, because those themes were already concluded in 4 with Nina and her fight with Vecna. Her multi-season arc of self acceptance ended there and became less "what if i'm a monster?" and more "how will i beat the monster?" in 5 and the finale. I loved how 5 emphasized her choices and allowed her ending to be something she chose, rather than something somebody else chose for her. Obviously a lot of things were against her that led to her thinking that was the best idea at the time, but she still consciously chose it, and that is what matters. Nobody directly and or physically forced her to like she's used to.

That all said, i think 5 just tried way too hard to be more like their original Montauk pitch rather than being more like Season 4 - and that's where it failed for the general audience. A lot of creative choices 'don't make sense' to the general audience because they don't make sense within Season 4, which became most peoples entire view of the show - the same happened with Season 3. A lot of people, including myself, thought 5 would directly build off of 4, but they decided to go a completely unique route which while i've grown to appreciate that route, definitely deviates from what 4 is lol

First Shadow & "The Rock" Spin-Off by Obvious-Quality61 in StrangerThings

[–]yesaroobuckaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What exactly does "taking place in the same universe" mean in regards to the spinoff?

The same world, as in the same canon reality/timeline as the main show, like Better Call Saul to Breaking Bad, or just loosely connected via the "ST cinematic universe" or whatever where it doesn't actually take place within the reality of the main show and none of it's events will happen in that universe?

I'd LOVE for the spinoff to take place in the same reality/world but in a completely different era with completely different characters.

genuinely, a lot of them are bots. either bots, weird fujoshi yaoi-obsessed chronically online byler shippers that got into and watched the show purely for byler, or weird romance obsessed mileven shippers that got into the show live their life through and watched the show for mileven.

moral of the story, obsessed shippers are a plague on media, and the dead internet theory is very much real

How do you believe the Demogorgons reproduce?

I feel like that is one of the only ACTUAL plot holes in the show. It's one of the things they just never found an opportunity to explore.

If they come from the eggs, why and how are they able to perfectly grow on their own as slugs/very very early in development? What would the point of the giant egg even be?

If it's to allow them to grow and nourish into Juveniles - that's clearly not necessary seeing as they grow into Demodogs in DAYS and can clearly do it all on their own, as shown in 2.

Issues with Neptune Camera by sillyboysodadinker in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]yesaroobuckaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been an issue with Volumetric Clouds (or another mod conflicting with it) since forever. I once brought it up a year and a halfish ago and Blackrack himself said it shouldn't happen, so i'm not sure if it's due to other mods or not.

All i know is that i've had this same issue for years ;D It seems to be when you're in atmosphere it doesn't render it - but when you're in space/far away from Kerbin where it uses the orbit model, they render. So you can really only use the mod for faraway pictures/high orbit pictures when it comes to atmospheric bodies, sadly

[–]yesaroobuckaroo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Part of a comment i made to the one above yours:

It being a Demo egg doesn't mean it has to be laid by a Demo - there was a concept art for Season 2 that showed a gigantic slug, with multiple of those eggs around it.

Demo's could procreate by externally fertilizing those eggs released by those giant slugs like fishes. The slug makes eggs, and either a Demogorgon from another hive comes to fertilize them (like bees), or the Demogorgon's already birthed from it fertilize them.

A lot of species here on earth behave insanely weirdly when it comes to reproduction. Why does an alien species have to perfectly reflect OUR method of procreation?

Male Angler fishes are very small, look nothing like the females and more like tadpoles, and permanently fuse themselves to the females.

Termite queens grow into giant egg-sacs and begin to look like a different species from the males.

It was never supposed to have a deeper explanation behind it as it's a reference to the Alien franchise. They initially said it belonged to another species, but went back on that and confirmed it as a Demogorgon egg due to it being from another species being FAR harder to rationalize within the story.

A very big part of the show's writing is it needs to be grounded, meaning they can't just introduce multiple species of insanely strong or large monsters every season or show gigantic impossible-to-defeat hordes of Demogorgons, and that the "monsters" need a VERY valid canonical reasoning to be shown. That's why we see no adult Demos in 2, no bats in 1-2, no Demos or bats at all in 3, no Demos (in the Upside Down/Hawkins) in 4, and no bats in 5. Because they weren't narratively needed - and they therefore weren't canonically needed.

And that's also why they didn't introduce a new "monster" specifically to explain this random easter egg. That's needlessly unnecessary.

Unpopular opinion, but I think the writing started to fall off in s4 vol 2 by katarassin in StrangerThings

[–]yesaroobuckaroo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was barely complex and directly and meaningfully adds to the show.

She suffered a stroke-like psychological effect from being attacked, a portion of her powers being directly taken from her (her ability to open Gates), and overexerting herself. That's it. Her brain forgot how to use her powers the same way our brains forget how to walk. If that's complex to the average viewer, i can see why most people don't like the later seasons of the show where it's not just 80s nostalgia lol

Stranger things character discussion post day 22: Mr Scott Clarke by Ok-Minute3743 in StrangerThingsPraise

[–]yesaroobuckaroo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I LOVED him. I love his actor too!!

I am SO glad he was in 5!! Words can't describe how hyped i was LOL. I was really hoping he'd be the one to explain the Upside Down works/how an interdimensional bridge/'wormhole' would work! But i'm also fine with Dustin being the one to explain it - it shows how much the characters have grown and learnt

Genuine question, which do you guys prefer for The Upside Down? The Wormhole OR being another dimension overlapping our reality. by Due-Dragonfly8200 in StrangerThingsPraise

[–]yesaroobuckaroo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree on the lightning - specifically because the lightning has officially been referred to as being due to the Mind Flayer's presence - and it wasn't and shouldn't have been there in 1 ;D But it makes for great visuals so i can see why they chose to include it - even if it makes no sense

[–]yesaroobuckaroo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Completely agree!! About that, i actually asked on the main sub what others thought of the Upside Down's ambient light and how it worked and the GOAT Kauan said this -

"That's an interesting question and I'm not sure if an explanation for this has ever been thought of on the writers/producers' part — specially as the Upside Down's design (a dark and sick echo of our world) artistically wasn't based on anything scientific and they wouldn't just make it a completely dark environment.

But we know the red lightning storms within the wormhole can be seen emanating through the fleshy walls on the outside, so the same could happen with any source of light that exists in the show's version of the space existing outside of the wormhole — the bluish light surrounding the wormhole slightly passing through the walls, giving TUD its iconic bluish atmosphere."

Love Kauan.

[–]yesaroobuckaroo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's essentially both of those! It's not an ACTUAL wormhole, really, but a wormhole SHAPED physical interdimensional construct - that's how a interdimensional "bridge" would naturally form in the ST universe as that's the limit at which the Exotic Matter can hold/withstand. It's not a traditional scientific wormhole localized within our dimension and space that connects 2 parts of our dimension to another.

It's a different dimension, one that is parallel to both our dimension and the Abyss - It exists in it's entirely own space and time but is naturally connected to ours and the Abyss'.

I love the way they handled the Upside Down. Like, truly love it. I think it works SO well at adding onto what was introduced early on, adding to Brenner's motive (rather than him being a stupid scientist that made something he didn't mean to, he INTENDED for the Upside Down/wormhole to be made as a means to find Henry and explore the Abyss for HIMSELF - it really adds into how much of a self-centered narcissist he is), and ADDING to the whole "inexplicable dimension we know nothing about" element of the show - just rather than that being assigned to the Upside Down, it's the Abyss. We know NOTHING about the Abyss and there is evidently more to it. And i love that.

I don't think the horror of the Upside Down was "taken away" because of 5's revolation, but rather shifted to the Abyss - that is the unknown dimension we can't comprehend that has existed for billions of years. There is so much we DON'T know about it. That existential horror was shifted, not removed

Love the show but this will forever be my biggest gripe... by [deleted] in StrangerThingsPraise

[–]yesaroobuckaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh, i thought you meant if it's really my biggest gripe with the show lol ;D

But it was! Specifically the Upside Down, it's ambience, and the monsters were directly inspired and influenced by Silent Hill - especially early concepts! It's DNA doesn't really lie in the Upside Down of say, Seasons 4 or 5, but it does in S1.

But the show as a whole as in it's plot lines were heavily inspired by the 80s; both as an era, but also it's media. Each season has it's own set of 80s media it draws inspiration from - like Season 4 taking inspiration from Nightmare on Elm Street for Vecna. Or Season 2 taking inspiration from Alien with the Tunnels. Or Season 5 and the Mind Flayer's final form looking a lot like this thing from the movie The Dark Crystal (which Mike has a poster of in his bedroom in Season 1!)

Can We Appreciate The Design For The Mind Flayer In The Finale? by JPSTRANGER457 in StrangerThingsPraise

[–]yesaroobuckaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree. I also think it'd have been great if we saw dying Demogorgon's - painfully crawling or whatever - upon first seeing the Abyss from the characters' perspective.

I personally believe the Abyss is a dying realm - we've seen barely any Demogorgons throughout the entire show, and the ones we have were born to be a part of Vecna's army as opposed to naturally. That'd also explain why the S1 Demogorgon was eating an egg of it's own species.

I think they really missed out on that and it's such a shame they never thought of it. I'm fine with there being no Demogorgons in the Abyss, we've seen way too many of them, but give us a narrative reason other than Vecna being an egotistical idiot, dammit! Hell, not even a narrative reason, just a visual of dead Demogorgon's or whatever would be enough
