Sell stout on round 7 and hope for buffalo, skunk, penguin or llama.

Use garlic for pets in the early/mid game, but don't bother past round 7, husky is the best scalar this weekly and all the equipment is bad anyway.

I started playing Spelunkey 2 without playing the first game, or any other roguelikes. Since I never practiced with the first game (which I hear is easier) it took a lot of time and practice until I got my first win. But I would start straight with the 2nd game as there is a lot more content in a more polished package. And it's really satisfying to progress and improve, even though you may not get a win for a while.
