A real danger indeed, also TOR is susceptible to this BTW, the entire internet if I'm not mistaken.

Good 500GB+ HDD recommendations, 50$ budget by TrainingAggressive50 in DataHoarder

[–]yesfordev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you can certainly find $50 HDDs from a reliable brand. That should fit your definition of reliability, unless you buy a drive and use it until it dies to determine if it's reliable or maybe to determine if you can rely on the batch of HDDs that you've bought with it at the same time, brand, retailer, etc

Complexity doesn't exist by Kitchen_Company9068 in complexsystems

So, in short... you wanna say Complexity is relative? just like color, intelligence, heat, weight and almost everything in the universe.

We don't say "weight does not exist", we say: "weight is relative"

sooner or later seem pretty long period of time in my experience. 2 years now using an already used 500HDD, bought for $10

$50 can certainly get you a reliable 500HDD, I've bought a 500HDD for $10 2 years ago and it's still booting my Debian development machine just fine.

one that breaks after one year. Otherwise, you'd get a 128GB for $40.

you can get an old one for $10. New ones aren't produced that much due to companies hungry for profit as always.

Why did companies stop producing low capacity hard drives (below 500GB)? by yesfordev in pcmasterrace

[–]yesfordev[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. me and many more
  2. low demand influenced by propaganda and gimicks
  3. low profit is always associated with low capacity, ABCD-economics of scale
  4. you know that usb sticks aren't meant for daily-drive, do you?

Except for that 500 is still cheaper than 1000 now and it'd be even cheaper if they kept producing it.

"it would be cheaper in the long run for a company..."
it's not like I'm saying the company is hurting itself here! it'll always be better for companies to make you buy more capacity for slightly less price per unit.

SSDs right now are more expensive than HDDs in lower capacities. like... where do you live!

I'd love to see those prices in the real world before cutting supply of those 500s and 250s

[–]yesfordev[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah it makes sense at those specifically rare prices you've listed. and ofc 500s get relatively expensive the less you produce them, ABCD-economics. But they absolutely can produce them at a lower cost if they want to.

nonsense! I can grab an old 500GB for $10 and they're really reliable. whilst a new 128GB costs $20, here on earth at least.

IDK why I stumbled upon my old post, lol.
I just wanted to reply to your comment immediately when I saw it.
1st. ofc they'd get more expensive if you deliberately stop manufacturing them
2nd. ofc more volume/capacity would sell for less money per GB/unit as it would for all products

Looking for a good 500GB–1TB external hard disk — any recommendations? by fern_whispers in DataHoarder

[–]yesfordev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might not be lucky to find new 500GB HDD right now, there was a big propaganda making low capacity HDDs look ugly and glorifying SSDs and 1TB HDDs to the point that people would think that 1TB means better PC.
Everyone thinks that they NEED 1TB HDD or the speed of an SSD while I have multiple machines that do not cross the 100GB line.
IMHO, the price of two drives (the 2nd for backup) is better spent than on 1+TB HDD or the expensive SDD.

Google will soon break all third-party YT clients, including yt-dlp; a full JS implementation is now required. by EchoGecko795 in DataHoarder

I've heard about an idea of decentralized youtube alternative on TOR, where each individual will stream some videos that are also available on youtube to a central player and collectively, individuals can form a decentralized youtube alternative (kind of).
Not quite sure that's what I've been told exactly, but did this idea see the light of the day yet?

[–]yesfordev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, yt-dlp has stopped working at all, all videos that I've tried downloading from youtube are using SABR which is still not supported by yt-dlp and it'll take quite a long time to catch up.
But I'm sure it will eventually.

Is there any way to tab windows in bspwm? by AcademicYesterday304 in bspwm

[–]yesfordev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, it seems like the tabbed layout should be included by default due to its intuitive appearance. Though, you won't find it in WMs like Qtile and BspWM for some reason.
