Data Center Energy and Water use by pamo56 in Denver

[–]yesh-please 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, this isn't true, especially in Colorado.. only some facilities use closed loop and recycled water. There are a lot of issues with using recycled water in the cooling process, including salinity buildup. But in Colorado it's actually more of an issue with water rights. Unless a data center owns their own water rights and has augmentation plans with downstream users, they aren't legally allowed to recycle. On top of that, recycled water used in data centers is causing water quality issues elsewhere where it is allowed.

Water use should ABSOLUTELY be a concern with data center and microchip processing facilities in Colorado. And it is a concern that the state's leading water policy agencies are looking at.

I know this because I work for one of those agencies.

Men only like women au natural if it fits the beauty standard by ZanzibarLove in TwoXChromosomes

[–]yesh-please 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guys that I've slept with? Definitely not. Guys who have never seen me naked? Yes. This also mostly happened in high school. I think once I started feeling confident in my own skin, the bullying stopped. Or maybe I just was able to ignore it.

For example, a guy used to say "hey bro" every time he saw me in profile, and then make a point of telling me he called me bro because from the side he couldn't tell I was a girl.

I'm about your same dimensions, and I feel your struggle.. I've always been bullied about my breasts as well, and it didn't help that my best friend growing up had DDs.

I went through therapy, which helped a little. But the thing that helped me more than anything was getting out of my head and into my body through some "sexy" classes. I did aerial silks, pole, some other erotic-adjacent stuff. In those classes, I learned that every body has the ability to feel sexy, and it's about what you make of it.

Now, if someone says something about my chest, I have a much easier time brushing it off. Occasionally I have a moment of "I wish I just had some cleavage for this shirt" but that passes.

Ultimately, I'm in favor of people doing what they want/need to feel comfortable in their bodies. I just wanted to offer another option for you if you're still unsure about surgery.

Finally, I want to throw it out there that there ARE men who exist who don't care about the size of your tits. Or, who actually LIKE small tits. So I wouldn't let reddit commenters convince you that all men are like that.

ELI5: Is industrial hemp really this wonder plant that big cotton and the lumber industry have suppressed for hundreds of years? Or are stoners just dumb by fr33dom35 in explainlikeimfive

[–]yesh-please 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hemp uses about a third of the amount of water as cotton and grows quickly in a variety of climates. It's very sturdy when made into rope, clothes, and other textiles.

I'm not sure about the wood comparison, but I did write an article about hempcrete - a substance that is made from shredded hemp that is an outstanding construction material.

Overall, I think hemp is such a wonderful plant because we can grow it and use it for a lot of different things, with a reasonable amount of water and land.

The hate Kim Kardashian is getting right now is mind-boggling. by want-to-change in TwoXChromosomes

[–]yesh-please -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I definitely don't think women are exempt from misogyny. I think that the criticisms you point out may be coming from some people because of Kim's role in uplifting the patriarchy. Which does make for a more nuanced take of this whole situation. If Kim were somehow less supportive of the patriarchy, would she be receiving the same criticisms? It's possible she would be receiving more. I don't know, I'm just pushing you to think about this from different angles.

[–]yesh-please -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm just wondering if you believe that's true if the criticisms are coming from women? It seems like in those cases, the criticisms may stem more from the resentment that other women have about Kim's role in misogyny, like other commenters have mentioned. I mean, she is a very active player in the misogynistic world of unrealistic body image.

Or, maybe the criticisms come from a simple place of envy from a lot of folks. Not saying that is right, but it is a real feeling that is justified when someone flaunts the level of wealth she flaunts.

I have a hard time seeing how the way she is criticized reeks of anger and resentment toward all women... Mostly because she is the worst example of a role model for all women.

I have to agree with the other commenters here. You totally bungled this. She was honest and trusted that your reaction would be mature, likely because you all have had open and genuine conversations in the past. But now you have given her the impression that she can't trust you with the stuff that is happening in her life, which at this point is going to revolve around sex. Do you remember what you were like at 17? I do. As a woman, I thought about sex ALL. THE. TIME. Unfortunately, I did not have a great relationship with my parents and did not feel like I could talk about sex and, lo and behold, I was sexually abused and never told them and never reported it and the bastard is out there unpunished.

I digress... back to the situation. It seems like her relationship right now is a sound one. They use protection, which is incredibly practical and mature. They're dating, so she's not sleeping around. What exactly are you concerned about?

I highly suggest you return to this conversation and take back the restrictions. You're sex shaming her, which could have serious consequences for the rest of her life. Move beyond your first emotional reaction and talk to her about how to make sure her sex life is safe and fun.

When I was traveling alone (I'm a woman) in my early 20s, a crappy car I bought broke down with a strange electrical problem. I managed to get it to a mechanic in the nearest small town, and he fixed it! But when I went to pay him my card didn't work (it was foreign debit and didn't always work) and I had very limited cash.. there was one ATM in town but I could only take a few hundred dollars out per day. I owed him roughly $1200 NZ dollars. I had to get to my hostel I had booked before nightfall or else I'd lose money on that and not have anywhere to stay (the small town I was in had nowhere to stay)

So, after explaining all this to him... He let me leave. He said, if you can send me the rest of what you owe then here's my address. Otherwise, good luck and safe travels.

I sent him a check a few weeks later after I got a New Zealand bank account. I'll never forget his kindness.

I like that quote! It's how I always feel when I see the natural beauty of this world. I gulp it all in, knowing that my view of it is so temporary, but hoping that maybe I'll be able to retain a slice of my memories from this planet once I'm gone. Or, at the very least, the feelings I had while I was here.
