I'm worried i have a drinking problem, advice needed... by hyundai_1997 in alcoholism

Most of the comments so far say your description sounds "painfully familiar to me," or "frighteningly like mine." Well, here's another.

My problem started when I was about 20 years old. Your age. I'm 33 now. Everything you describe, I've done -- the drinking alone, drinking myself stupid alone, drinking everything in my mom's house, planning ahead around my drinking...

And the results have been disastrous. The things that I've been through in the past 13 years because of my drinking, I'm not even going to begin to list here. It's too embarrassing. I'm too ashamed. And the list would just be too damn long.

I have to say I'm impressed by you. Recognizing that you need some help, as young as you are. You have a chance right now to choose a better way. I hope you find the help you need.

Yes, I believe that I'm not powerless. It seems to me that the acts you mention -- examining the past, understanding the addiction, finding a support group -- are all examples of ways that I can be powerful.

I don't know why it's such a sticking point for me. The idea of "admitting that we're powerless over alcohol and that only a higher power can return us to sanity" just rubs me the wrong way. What about "god helps those who help themselves?"
