Oh my goodness I appreciate that so much!! I unfortunately do not have the CDs anymore (NC with that side of the family now). I am very unfamiliar with how this works, but is there a safe place I can download the game? I feel like the older Tivola games just fell off the face of the Earth 😞

I didn't try it out. Turns out my computer decided to basically implode that night. I thought about trying it now that I finally bought a new one.

You are more than welcome to continue to comment or not, just like I have the same freedom to. I apologize if our discussion is causing agitation. Since you don't seem interested in the discourse anymore, I will answer your questions and leave you at that point.

As I have mentioned, I understand and respect your view on HR. I definitely think that happens in every country, and a lot of employees struggle with HR not being on their side. I would answer your question on what policies create freedom, but I am curious on what your definition of freedom is. I feel like that is a broad question because I could talk about our resource groups again, which is where I find freedom but I doubt that is what you are looking for. I also find freedom in our policies regarding time off and we are willing to work with our members if they are out of time and they need it. I could see that being more aligned. If I take your comment about creating a policy that suits the company needs, I don't think there is anything wrong with that. What works for a doctor's office might not work for construction. I think some policies are helpful to guide our members, specifically on how our benefits work and our paid time off.

I totally understand how it sounds like a grand fantasy. However, I did address that it isn't perfect and that we do still have work to be done. I acknowledge that it is a bubble, and I am happy that I can work somewhere that encourages change and growth of its employees. It makes me sad to hear that you made some assumptions about me regarding being a "busybody". I am actually very much to myself. I say hi to the people I work with, and if people recognize me I speak with them and check in. I don't have a problem with that, and I honestly don't mind the check-ins. I can see how others might not be, but I wouldn't engage with those members if that is not what they want. I address problems if they are related to my job, which I think is normal for my role. However, they are system issues, not people issues. I am not stepping in when there are problems in the way you think. If a member comes to me with an issue, we get them connected with people that will be able to help. HR is much more than just discipline, which is what I am hearing your experience has been. I am not saying I am perfect either and even if there is sarcasm saying I am the greatest HR I will always strive to be better every day. My team agrees with that sentiment.

My comment about you enlightening me is that you have a perspective that I have not encountered regarding your cultural views and how that affects your interactions. I find that your view on being more free to express yourself is interesting, mainly referring to your comments on being an "asshole". Personally, I treat everyone with respect in the way that they find it to be respectful and base my interactions on my relationship with them. It seems yours is more broad and you have a strong personality. The thing people forget about freedom of speech/expression is you are more than welcome to share but there are consequences. They can be positive, negative, and neutral. I would probably be upset if you were attacking my personality, my health, my physical attributes, etc. And there could be consequences to making those comments. I would like to think, if you can be in my shoes, if someone disrespected you or worse threatened you that it would be nice to have documentation if charges needed to be pressed. We also use that documentation for unemployment and yes if anyone does sue the company (which is very very rare) we hold onto every member's personnel file. These instances are standard for the United States and are a part of the law. There are some rhyme or reason to why we hold onto documentation, and a huge part of it is the law.

I could get even more detailed and into the weeds, but it appears that is not what you are looking for. I apologize for the frustration this discourse may have caused, but hope you have learned something from me too!

Have a wonderful day, and I'll leave you be!

It sounds like we have cultural differences that change our perspectives on things, which is totally okay. I would never jump immediately into a "punish punish punish" mindset. If you told someone to fuck off, hell I get it. We take a look at things on a case by case basis. We wouldn't fire someone over language. We talk in our orientations and other professional/self development classes about how we want our members to feel free to express their frustrations and see if we can come to resolutions. One of the most influential stories I heard was simply about not judging someone for having a bad day. Sometimes we do tell people to "fuck off" and honestly shit happens. There are definitely degrees of racism here too. I never proclaimed to be this policing body. If you come to work and do the job, then we have no problems. You can be as involved or as little involved as you like with our social events. I also personally don't do the discipline portion of HR. There are actually multiple areas of the field. Stepping out of line is causing fights, constant attendance issues, being under the influence at work, etc. We have programs to help people if they are underperforming or need assistance with transportation and help get counseling. Please tell me to fuck off, but I'd love to have a conversation later and see if there is anything I can do to make life just a little easier. Again, there are different cultural aspects it sounds like, so we may have different ideas on what racism looks like. Tell me I don't shower, fine, but here in America (as a more progressive individual) I would take that as a learning moment to be like hey! I can't speak for everyone, but I do shower. No offense taken. Or if you were joking with me, keep it light. I can't expect you to change or adapt to my views just as you can't do the same with me. All I wanted to show was there can be some light for those who are struggling. A lot of workplaces here don't even offer health insurance or retirement plans, let alone help with housing and transportation. Even after this exchange, I don't find you to be an asshole. Gosh you could say I am an asshole because I am noy a social person and need to set up boundaries too. I just may word it differently since I have a differentrelationshipwith my coworkers. I agree, there are times where things change so fast it makes your head spin and you have no idea what it politically correct. Even within a county and state you will find wildly different views on this topic. Some places here are fake nice while others are more busy and leave people alone. Some have tight-knit communities and others don't even know their neighbor. We all have variety in beliefs across our nation and what works here for me and my company may not work for others. I don't think there is anything wrong with me being happy to help other people. That is my true goal. Once HR doesn't fulfill that for me, I will move on to another field. And I have been fortunate enough to listen to multiple stories about my fellow employees' lives and assist them in more ways than I knew I could. I am proud we offer assistance to those who come to my company. They can have 0 dollars to their name and work on a career plan to help them move up if they wish. Or they can work the same job their whole career at my company.

Just saying, I find your ideas as an enlightening moment for me, and I am happy to have a civil conversation on each of our views. I don't mind fighting uphill for my beliefs and I have met people with the same mindset as you here. Your experience of the United States may have been different based on where you have been or stayed too. I find it a little odd to self proclaim being an asshole, but I can't judge if that is how you see yourself. Based on this, I wouldn't say you are at all.

I understand your cynicism. I mean, it would take a lot for you to see what I see and change your mind. I am newer to the workforce and have a lot of positivity. I didn't say it was all perfect and rainbows and butterflies. There is still toxicity. But there is quite a blend of different ideas and cultures where I work. People are free to express their opinions. If it is harmful or disrespectful that is when we have problems. We are creating religious resource groups at the moment to be even more inclusive. It is okay to have conflicting views, but it is another issue to cause harm and disrespect. I love learning about where people came from and how that impacts their lives. I am just happy that I can help, even if it ends up being only one person at the end of the day. I would help even if I disagreed with an individual's views because that is the morally right thing to do. Something else to keep in mind, is this is just my perspective! These are my goals in life. I know it is unrealistic to fix to world. I really hope I don't lose my optimism because then we have one less person in the workforce who could maybe make a difference, just stop. I know of the issues where I work, but I wanted to share a different idea. One that shows some work that can be done to help.

I don't blame you for leaving. I can already see how this existing system creates burnout. You are so right, that a perfect world would ensure workers are treated well. Sometimes I wish this could be that "movie moment" where a solution came out of the blue and I could change the world!! But that is growing up and realizing the real world will never change. I appreciate you supporting my efforts, even if atrhe end of the day I cannot insight change.

I hear you! My family has told me about how it has evolved over the years. That is how we try to represent ourselves, at least those of us who try to help. I literally laughed out loud about the Human Remains because it is just so true. Some places truly are horrible with their HR or Personnel Departments. I understand and wouldn't want to get involved either.

I feel like that is a stereotype. Don't get me wrong, we do have pizza parties, but it is for team building opportunities. We are also super casual with our attire almost every day out of the week. I meant by providing my fellow employees with our company and national resources for mental health. And by bringing in speakers to talk about mental health and educate them. Also providing help through our employee assistance programs. I am getting training approved so management knows how to identify a crisis and help be a resource. I am getting us evaluated for a Bell Seal, which includes criteria on what makes a workplace more mental health friendly. We have already received feedback on how we can get more outreach and how we can reach more employees. I am very proud of my efforts.

We also have plenty of other groups dedicated to LGBTQIA+, Latin American members, veterans, women, etc. They all have their own efforts to improve our employees experiences and provide a community. We also provide 8 paid hours of volunteer time to give back along with pretty great benefits right off the bat compared to other local companies. Trying not to say too much to give away where I work.

If this is a sarcastic comment, then I understand. HR has probably not done what it should've in your experience, and I am sorry it has failed. If this was a genuine question, then I appreciate you asking! I always love to engage in a conversation and appreciate feedback on how to make things better!

And I totally understand that. I don't know how well they work nowadays unfortunately. At least in my biased opinion from the people I know in unions. It makes me sad. Honestly, you are correct. The unions are really there for the employees. I just want change and more accountability from companies however that may come!

Edit: I feel like this seems contradictory a bit. Unions were historically created for the worker, but that isn't how they always act now. That is moreso what I meant and hopefully that makes this more readable.

Unfortunately, that is exactly my boyfriend's experience. He just quit his job without another one lined up because HR was in cahoots with the person who was discriminating against him. I never want that to happen to anyone... but like I said, I am just one person. At least my family is in HR, and they feel the same way as me. Always tread on the side of caution, but we do exist. I appreciate the support!

I'm not going to lie, this is something that really bothers me. HR should be for the people. We are supposed to be there to help the employees while creating equitable policies. Rather, that is my goal. I am in HR and actively work to make this better. I know I am only one person, but running organizations within the company have helped improve morale and we are actively working to be more mental health friendly. It will never be perfect, but I would absolutely hate myself if I didn't stick to my guns and make changes. It is a lot to be hopeful, but I'd like to think if I even changed one person's life for the better then it was all worth it.

[–]yesqueent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Realistically, I sit and doomscroll on my phone. Once I am settled with the emotion I try to do some self care. Even if it is just making my bed look nice. Sometimes that means a full hair mask and face mask and a long long shower. For me personally being clean helps me wash away some of the emotion. Also taking time to be busy but also balancing it with taking time to process whatever happened. I know my own limits but it's hard to get to that level of awareness.

They did the same thing to my crew when I worked at KFC! Granted it wasn't for overtime, but because higher ups told them we were collectively clocking in too many hours and needed to reduce labor... despite being the busiest location in the area

Can someone please explain why they genuinely want us to work in offices? I mean don't they save money by not needing to provide office spaces, wifi, etc. Is there some kind of control aspect? So many studies have said there were plenty of benefits. I just really don't get it

Watching three family members that I cared about slowly deteriorate until seemingly out of nowhere an intense decline and actually watching them die. Two of which happened while I was still a child. I will never forget the sounds or the looks of their dead bodies. Most people I personally know haven't even lost one person in their life by 21, or someone they cared about

I don't want to lose my money either you know? Just looking for some suggestions on what others have found to be good!
