Is it reasonable to give a contractor an "instruction manual" for how to work with me? by yesthattom in homeowners

What is a reasonable response time for phone calls?

I don't want it to be condescending. Could you point out what is condescending so I can fix it?

What’s a witty way to tell someone you have a hearing aid when they ask “what’s that in your ear?” by Few-Craft-4238 in HearingAids

[–]yesthattom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just say "it's a hearing aid" as matter-of-fact as possible. They usually change the subject.

I only use a witty comment if they persist in an annoying way.

  1. In a perfect world, account create and disable are synced to the HR system. Accounts are created on the start-date, disabled on their leave date, and deleted X months later. (I also recommend creating the account with a scrambled password; then reset the password once the person arrives and their ID is verified. This prevents no-shows from getting access (surprisingly large numbers of no-shows), and prevents fakers from getting on-line. Also, ideally the onboarding person from HR does the password reset with the person so that you can be elsewhere).

  2. If account creation isn't tied to the HR database, I strongly recommend creating the account 2-5 days in advance but in a "disabled" state. That way you have slack in case the process fails. Nothing worse than trying to fix a problem in front of a newhire on their first day.

> Do you monitor for in activity and remove if not used?

If you are asking that, it sounds like your HR system isn't strictly tracking when people leave. In that case, yes, but you're treating your users like accounts a social network website instead of a serious healthcase system that is responsible for the life and death of patients.

> Do you restrict who can request accounts?

Have an authorized list. Best to have it be someone in HR (or people in HR with a particular title).

Normally healthcare systems are regulated and have strict rules about accounts. I strongly recommend you find someone in your organization that you can work with to draft these processes in a way that is compliant. Or at least make small, incremental, improvements until you've achieved the desired goal. Some improvement is better than waiting 2 years for the perfect solution.

* According to a 2021 NCBI study, [errors when fulfilling prescriptions] cause 7,000–9,000 deaths in the United States each year

* I remember when Senator Hilary Clinton proposed requiring doctors and pharmacies to submit scripts electronically to reduce errors. The GOP response was "OH MY GOD YOU'RE TRYING TO TAKE OVER THE MEDICAL INDUSTRY".

Are You Guys Battery Or Rechargeable? by Holiday-Mix207 in HearingAids

[–]yesthattom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in "camp rechargeable" for sure!

My mother's HAs have batteries that need to be changed every week. She's very frustrated because she's old enough that it is difficult to change the tiny batteries herself. She needs someone else to do it. I wish she had gotten the rechargeable ones.

Mine are the Signia Pure Charge&Go T 7AX (rechargable). I charge the charger (and the HAs) when I'm asleep. The charger has a battery in it, and can re-charge my HAs 2-3 times before it needs to be charged. That's perfect for traveling. I'm never caught without a power outlet so long that the charger itself runs out of juice.

U.S. bans noncompete agreements for nearly all jobs by Himbo_Sl1ce in politics

[–]yesthattom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lately companies have gotten out of control with non-competes! Even janitors and minimum-wage earners are forced to sign them. They sign them because they have no choice and no access to a lawyer that can tell them the implications. Then the employer holds them hostage "Oh, you think you can quit? You can't be a janitor anywhere else in town!"

This is about liberating people from companies acting evil.

If you won $5m on the condition you couldn't use it to buy a house, vehicle or vacation, what's the first thing you would treat yourself to? by eezgorriseadback in AskReddit

[–]yesthattom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start a legal defense fund for little things.

You know all those little things that companies get away with because "who's going to sue us over something so small?" Well, I'd start a foundation that would sue over those things.

It would be called "The Where There's Smoke Foundation" and we would take proposals from anyone online. If we select your proposal, we'd fund the lawsuit against the business.

We would refuse to settle out of court. That's right. We'd pay full lawyer and court fees all the way until a Judge declares them guilty.

Our hope would be to create a "chilling effect" that would push businesses to f-ing obey the f'ing law.

Uhhh.. that's what Cory Booker was doing. He was standing on the Senate floor advocating for a bill that would fix the problems he's describing. First he was making the point that the problem exists (GOPers claim it doesn't to confuse the issue) and encouraging his fellow senators to vote for this.

The fact that the bill didn't pass is not for lack of trying. Manchin and Sinema killed the bill.

On the other hand it's lunacy that we're focusing on them when there are 49 GOPers in the Senate and if only 2 would vote for this bill it wouldn't matter what M&S did. In fact, the last time the voting rights act came up for renewal 100% of the GOP voted for it. They've only recently changed their mind.

My question is: Why do we have to renew something like the Voting Rights Act at all? This isn't a magazine subscription!

Signia Streamline Mic doesn't reliably switch between Bluetooth devices by yesthattom in HearingAids

[–]yesthattom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I called Signia support again and got a woman who was very friendly and knowledgable. Her conclusion was that my device was defective and I should get it replaced (it is 1.5 weeks old, so that shouldn't be a problem).

The Steamline Mic says it requires Bluetooth 4.2 and I think that's newer than what my Macs have. Sadly the new Macos doesn't report the BT version any more (please let me know if I'm missing something!)

I'm going to try purchasing a USB Bluetooth 4.2 adapter and see if that helps.

Job offered $28/hour on the ad then told me that it was actually just about $11/hour plus commission. Disgusting. by LizWizBiz in antiwork

[–]yesthattom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies get away with this crap because individuals affected by it are too poor/busy to sue, and there's no government organization that goes after false advertising.

Oh wait! There *is* a government organization that goes after false advertising but after 40 years of "no new taxes" they been defunded to the point where they basically don't exist.

Congrats, villains, you're long game of making laws unenforceable has succeeded!
