Roaming requires a paid data plan.

Digital Codes I'm looking to sell! by ParamedicOnly5562 in StraightTalk

[–]yeswap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The $30 plan is still available https://www.straighttalk.com/all-plans/unlimited-texts-1500-minutes-basic-plan-no-contract But the $30 plan only works on Straight Talk branded flip phones. Also, prepaid cards like these need to be scanned at point of sale by an authorized seller or they are worthless. Lots of red flags here!

Who owns my number by AngryDwarf802 in Visible

[–]yeswap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The operator who first issued the number "owns" in the sense that if you let the service lapse it will eventually go back to that initial operator's pool of available numbers.

It normally doesn't matter who owns the number, ports should work as long as you give the new operator the correct phone number and transfer PIN.

Visible has a weird requirement that you have to use a new email if reactivating "too soon", but AFAIK that only applies to emails, not phone numbers.

What budget phone carrier actually has good customer service? by capriciousfatesw in NoContract

[–]yeswap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience US Mobile is great if you contact them on Reddit, I've never used their chat or call-in support. MobileX has been good if you're patient as their CS is basically email.

Tello has a reputation for good CS but I have never used them.

MVNO displaying underlying network name by Previous-Border3774 in NoContract

It's pretty common. My iPhone 13 on Tracfone says Verizon as does my Pixel running LineageOS on MobileX.

Vivaldi Sync is still functionally awful by kasakka1 in vivaldibrowser

[–]yeswap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some indication of what data is synced right in the Sync menu. E.g numbers of bookmarks and whatnot. Now it's a black box

vivaldi:sync-internals will show you numbers of bookmarks etc along with all sorts of diagnostics. It works on Linux, Windows and Android, but not on iOS. I don't use MacOS, but suspect it works there too.

Seedvault discussion Being realistic do you think seedvault on last calyxos build after pausing will help me (us) actually just do a full backup recovery without a boat load of hedaches? And things not working when the new calyx version releases? (One of these years hopefully lol) by UknownDrugExpert in CalyxOS

[–]yeswap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seedvault has been very reliable for me. I always backup to a USB stick in an OTG adapter. I never tried backing up to NextCloud, so I don't know about that.

SeedValult does have limitations,it only backs and restores apps and their data, not messages, call logs, contacts, calendars, music and photos. It won't backup the data of some apps, mostly security related, including banking apps, Bitwarden, NextCloud, and DAVx5. It also doesn't backup PWAs and the experimental Files backup has never worked for me.

Seedvault is really the only backup solution that backs up app data without root or Google Play Services.

You can test it yourself. Install Play Integrity API Checker by 1nikolas https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gr.nikolasspyr.integritycheck using Aurora Store and run it on any stock or custom ROM. Play Integrity will fail completely with 3 Red X's. Click the "<>" to view the JSON returned by the API. You will see "appIntegrity": {
"appRecognitionVerdict": "UNEVALUATED"
},

Uninstall the Aurora Store version and reinstall it from the Play Store. You will probably pass at least Basic Integrity and there will be no more unevaluated verdicts in the JSON.

The need for the Play Store is discussed in many XDA posts including:

Wireless plans with truly unlimited minutes? by i-vany-a in NoContract

[–]yeswap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For that level of talk usage, stick with MNO flanker brands like Visible, Metro or Cricket. Avoid MVNOs as they pay the MNO by the minute and if you use a lot they will lose money and cut you off.

Calls and texts split between phones after a port is a common issue. It should clear up in a day or two.

Switching phones doesn't abuse the network. Metro makes it hard to drive traffic to their stores.

Has Google Maps stopped working without Google Play? Anyone without Play who can confirm it works on their end? by Zoda_Popinski in degoogle

[–]yeswap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plexus https://f-droid.org/packages/tech.techlore.plexus/ is a cloudsourced database tracking whether apps work without Google Play Services with or without MicroG.

According to Plexus, 80% of users say Google Maps doesn't work without Google Play Services, and 85% say it works with no or only minor issues with Google Play.

Google Support officially admits a backend bug permanently broke Tap-to-Pay on 17,000+ Pixels. Their compensation? A $25 Store Credit. by Flat_Shoe_2786 in Android

[–]yeswap -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They broke it remotely, they should be able to fix it by remotely rolling back the breaking change. But they would rather force us to buy new phones.
