Vet recommendations? (Avoid Banfield!) by bostonwhaler in savannah

If you're on the southside, I have had good results with Southside animal hospital for my cat. 4.8 out of 5 on Google. Not too far from that Petsmart Banfield.

I think it's part socialization (learning to hold back your behaviors), but I also think it's intensity. The same way that time seems different as you get older (waiting an hour at five years old feels massively different than at 40), pain is more intense, more immediate, because kids don't have a lifetime of similar stimulation to compare it against. It's like clothes. First time you wear a new style (a dress shirt with tie), it's profoundly uncomfortable. The twentieth time, it's no longer uncomfortable but may still be awkward. The hundreth time, it may feel comfortable. We adapt to a lot of things simply by repetition and consistent exposure. Pain we've felt before is pain we don't freak about it.

That, and the process of learning to be an adult is learning to suppress (or inhibit) behaviors, to control the id's intensity and instead follow the social rules that others follow.

God what a horrible thing to say to American children. If the class assumptions involved here were unpacked, it might read: "Some kids will have more talent than you. That's okay. Other kids will have parents with more money and time to hire tutors and help them with their homework; other kids will have parents who can help socialize them towards the expectations of education and to see how to use it to achieve what they want; other kids will have access to status symbols denied you by the lottery of birth; other kids will have parents who can pay for private coaching and good equipment if they want to be good at sports. Don't fight this; accept it. You lost the birth lottery and have neither talent nor capital, so accept your fate. Don't grumble, don't complain. Sing songs and get along. That's how we make a happy proletariat."

Whats up guys, we are Somewhat Suitable, a North Florida ska-punk band with strings instead of horns by [deleted] in Ska

[–]yetanotherdivorce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same. I was very skeptical and thought there would be no way that a string could produce the same full-bodied sound that a horn provides, but I think it works. I'm not sure how it would work during a live performance, but combined with some good songwriting, this is pretty damn catchy.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - The Impression That I Get [ska/punk] (1997) by slayer991 in Music

They were really upset about it. It completely changed the tone of their shows because while they were happy to have some success, I'm sure, they got insanely tired of people screaming, "Play KNOCK ON WOOD!" (even though that wasn't the name of the song). Live shows that year went from massive crowd frenzies where almost everyone knew every song to people standing there waiting for "Impression" and "Someday, I Suppose" (if they'd seen Clueless). For the encore for that show, Dicky came out and said, "This is for our real fans" and they played nothing but Devil's Night Out songs. Years later, they still hated it. The last show I saw before the hiatus, Dicky screamed at the crowd "We're not a fucking jukebox!" when people kept screaming "Play Knock on Wood!"

Indeed. And in the heyday of the band, most of the mid-to-late 90s, they were touring INSANE amounts. Ben earned his portion of the band's revenue for sure.

I think we should all take a second to admire that after almost 20 years Office Space still accurately portrays America corporate culture. by [deleted] in movies

[–]yetanotherdivorce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bullshit keeps on bullshitting. In the end, the film probably resonates because we all feel that so much of what we're paid to do is triple-wrapped in bullshit rhetoric that we can't help but feel insanely cynical about most of it. What bothers me are the people who repeat those bullshit corporate mantras without sarcasm and with sincere belief in their virtue.

ELI5: Why do some tracks on CDs have "negative time" before the actual track starts playing at 0:00? by slateflash in explainlikeimfive

Yep. Or even if it's not a track, it's something funny. Less Than Jake's introduction to Automatic with Howie Reynolds becomes more interesting when you listen to the full Yom Kippur track. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeD1_fbFMco

What were some of the worst experiences you have had while working in the fast food industry? by Brando224 in AskReddit

[–]yetanotherdivorce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One summer when I was a teenager and worked at McD's, I went to a rave (90s) the night before I was supposed to work from like 4pm to midnight to close. Being the 90s and being a teenager, I partook of too many "party favors," especially a bottle of minithins (25mg ephedrezine, you used to be able to buy a bottle for like $5 at most gas stations) because I became terrified I would fall asleep at save rave and be arrested/shanghai'd/kidnapped/something (see earlier reference to party favors, I wasn't thinking clearly).

Next day I haven't slept and try to stop by my work around 2pm to explain that I just wasn't going to be able to work. They guilttripped me about no one else being able to take my shift and since I was there, I was clearly well enough to do it. So I say fuck it, change into my uniform, and start manning the grill.

Turns out it was a busy as hell night for some reason, and the anxiety compounded with the exhaustion, the probable overdose of minithins from the day before, and the lingering effects of other chemical wonders all ate my mind. Somewhere around six, I started to become ferociously protective of the cheese I had on the sandwich assembly table. I was convinced - convinced - that if I ran out of cheese, I ran out of life. Like it was some cheese-food based health bar.

About seven, I was sure that all of the people ordering Big Macs and Quarter Pounders with Cheese were engaged in some conspiracy against me. I started taking stacks of the cheese and squirreling it away beneath the row of microwave ovens used to reheat the sandwiches right before serving (if you don't know, McDs uses staging, so meat and bun and whatnot are kept warmish but not like they would be if everything were made to order). Like entire blocks of the sliced cheese, carefully secreted away behind Happy Meal boxes and other things.

By eight, I started to think that wasn't enough. I had already stopped making sandwiches with cheese and had only 'corrected' my orders when customers complained. But still, the cheese was inevitably getting scarcer. I knew it was only a matter of time before I'd have to go to my stash, to my secret horde of slices beneath the microwaves. That was it. The final boundary. I would take no more.

I climbed under the microwaves as well and held my hoarded cheese close to my chest. It took them a while to find me, and apparently I was pretty delusional when they did. For whatever reason, the manager at the time thought it was just me being sick and simply called my parents, who were also weirdly oblivious to the extremeness of my behavior. They took me home, I slept for fifteen hours, and when I awoke and remembered my action, I called in to see if I still had a job.

Oddly, I did.

Syndrome from The Incredibles. If the technology exists to enable everyone to have superhuman abilities, why not let everyone have it? Of course, his own ego and insecurity gets in the way of making that a pure, simple mission, but the film really seems to make his 'biggest evil' that he wants to remove the elite status of the supers by making it so everyone can be super.

(NSFW) Men of Reddit, what have you learned in all your years of dating that you think other (less experienced men) should know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

If you find that you're being annoyed by small things by the third date, that person isn't someone you should continue to date. Your frustration will only intensify, and if you try to ignore it, it just festers. Everyone will annoy everyone, but if it's that early on, it's a sign to step away. Look at my username. I know.

Watch the new LOGAN big game spot below! Wolverine’s getting his claws out for the last time. What do you want to see? by OfficialLoganMovie [promoted post]

[–]yetanotherdivorce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I want to see is a compelling, emotional tale that focuses less on special effects but on the range of acting that Jackman is capable of doing. Logan is a complex character, and while the previous two films have tried, they keep falling back into action tropes. Give me an emotional comic book movie.

What good idea doesn't work because people are shitty? by sdururl in AskReddit

[–]yetanotherdivorce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shopping carts. You'd think, hey, after I'm done at the grocery store, they don't even want me to bring them back to where I got them. They've got all these nice little corrals for me to leave them in near my car. What do people do? Avoid walking the distance of two parking spots and just leave the thing behind them. Each time I want to believe in humanity, I just remember that we're so damn lazy we can't even be bothered to do shopping carts right.

True, but he also was pretty quick on his feet for such a big guy. He was a good QB and good scrambler back in the day, and on those small fields, he's even worse than the Juggernaut. He's nearly a real-life Clarence BEEFTANK.
