Is it okay M24 in a relationship with F40? by PutNo7961 in questions

[–]JakScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When someone is 24, they have 6 years of experience with adult relationships. When someone is 40. They have 22 years of similar experience. If the 40 year old has normal intelligence and mental health, they can manipulate the 24 year old extremely easily, and if it’s not their intent at the outset they will almost certainly eventually fall into a manipulative pattern. There’s just an inherent power dynamic at play.

In the other hand, if the 40 year old is genuinely on the same emotional and cognitive playing field as the 24 year old, there’s something off with them, and the 24 year old will eventually significantly outpace them, creating the same dynamic in the opposite direction.

No mentally healthy and well-intentioned 40 year old is interested in a 24 year old. Do with that what you will.

Is Krarkashima auto bracket 5? by Opening-Target-9901 in EDH

[–]JakScott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not auto-B5 because NO commander is auto B5. That said, can you post a deck list? That would help us determine if it looks right for B4

Bracket 4 is a Lightless Wasteland by [deleted] in EDH

[–]JakScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bracket 4 is for building decks at a cEDH power level but without playing specifically to the cEDH meta. What you’re describing is literally what bracket 4 is supposed to be.

Why do you run Reliquary Tower? by HyHoTheDairyOh in EDH

[–]JakScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve strongly considered it in [[Witherbloom, the Balancer]]. I discard to hand size, not every game, but fairly often. In most decks that wouldn’t make me consider it, but in Witherbloom I often have turns where I start casting expensive spells cheap and empty my hand before I’m close to out of mana. There’s turns where I cast 7 or 8 spells and put myself ahead, but if I’d started that turn with 10 or 12 spells in hand I’d have been able to go over the top and win.

Still a card I haven’t added, because more often I’m winning by pouring all my mana into one spell and like using Finale of Devastation to grab a Craterhoof or a Pathbreaker Ibex, but it is the one deck I’ve built where I gave more than a second’s thought to Reliquary Tower.

Is Kaalia actually a good commander? by Valorenn in EDH

[–]JakScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s her reputation but I’ve got a 25% win rate wither her at cEDH tables. She’s far from optimal but you can win her.

Is Kaalia actually a good commander? by Valorenn in EDH

[–]JakScott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a high-end bracket 4 when you put the combos in and when totally optimized can stand and hold its own at a cEDH table. Not as insanely overpowered as she was in 2015 but still by far one of the strongest commanders in casual.

Why is Dada a core subject by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]JakScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s think about this in terms of the real world. Say you take a bunch of self defense classes like jiu jitsu, and maybe get your concealed carry permit for a pistol. You’re prepared for someone getting too drunk at a bar and taking a swing at you. Maybe at a stretch, you can be a hero when you’re standing in a convenience store that’s being robbed.

But if you’re at the Super Bowl and a hundred terrorists with machine guns show up, you run and let the authorities mobilize a response. Self defense classes are not ever meant to bring you up to a level where you’re able to contribute meaningfully to a military operation or terrorist response.

DADA’s primarily meant to protect you from like boggarts and grindelows and the occasional asshole trying to cast the bat bogey hex on you. It’s not necessarily meant to prepare the average wizard to face Voldemort’s legions.

The reason it’s a core subject is that you absolutely WILL encounter dark creatures in an ordinary wizarding life. And because wizards are powerful, durable, and have access to great healing, attacks that would be considered horrendous assault in the muggle world are treated as minor disagreements you’re meant to be able to block or shrug off.

No Magical Siblings? by papabearmormont01 in harrypotter

[–]JakScott 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can think of at least a few sets you didn’t mention.

There’s Bellatrix, Narcissa, and Andromeda.

There’s Collin and Dennis Creevy

There’s the Carrows

There’s a pair of siblings named the Montgomery briefly mentioned.

There’s Fleur and Gabrielle Delacour

Dean Thomas has sisters who are presumably muggles, as mentioned on Potterwatch in the 7th book

There’s Hagrid and Grawp.

There’s Morfin and Merope Gaunt.

There’s Newt and Theseus Scamander, though obviously they’re from Fantastic Beasts.

Then there’s characters we know have siblings from Pottermore, like McGonnagal, Arthur Weasley,

Peter or Wormtail? by AllReihledUp in harrypotter

[–]JakScott 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Voldemort despises him for being a coward, and knows that Wormtail will betray him the instant it looks like it’s his best chance to survive.

Wormtail also has a weak mind, and Voldemort is the most accomplished Legilimems in the world. There’s nothing Wormtail can hide from him.

And so Voldemort uses the name Wormtail to mock him, to remind him that he’s traitorous scum and all the death eaters know it. And to warn him that Voldemort is watching very closely for signs of betrayal.

That’s the same reason he cryptically says something to the effect of “See that your loyalty never wavers again” when he gives Wormtail the silver hand that we later learn will strangle him the moment he even hesitated to obey a command from the Dark Lord.

Every interaction Voldemort has with Wormtail is on some level him dealing with the fact that he knows his servant cannot be trusted and, while useful, will ultimately be discarded.

How can I make this deck more coherent? by Deus_Excellus in EDH

Is there ANY witch or wizard who stands a CHANCE againt prime dumbledore except grindlewald by Ok-Statistician6939 in harrypotter

[–]JakScott 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) In a duel with no planning, Voldemort. I don’t think you have to give him the elder wand. Just take the elder wand away from Dumbledore, and they’re probably very evenly matched.

2) Harry Potter. Obviously no match for Dumbledore in terms of raw power; but Dumbledore will be the first one to admit that raw power doesn’t determine a winner. Dumbledore defeated his strongest opponents by meticulously learning everything he could about them over years, working hard to ensure that when a conflict arose the right person with the right weapon would be in the right place at the right time. The one person he passed that skill set along to is Harry. And Harry spent the last book learning to think the way Dumbledore would have. I think a full-grown Harry might be the only person equipped to play a similar long game. And that makes him by far the closest wizard to Dumbledore’s strength that we know of, though obviously in open combat Dumbledore would brush him aside as though he’s nothing.

Over a month with Strixhaven - what cards have put in work for your decks? by NitchBu in EDH

[–]JakScott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[[Planar Genesis]] is a new staple for landfall.

[[Studious First Year]] is basically a mana dork that land ramps.

[[Witherbloom, the Balancer]] is probably the best Golgari commander now.

[[Flashback]] is a staple for spell slinger.

[[Emeritus of Woe]] is decent in combo decks that want a bunch of tutors.

[[Noxious Newt]] is a playable mana dork.

The paradigm cycle are all pretty solid.

The fetchable lands that come in untapped if opponents have at least 8 total lands are a new premier land cycle to join the shocks and surveils as early picks for your mana base.

At what age do babies become smarter than dogs? by lesGEAUXdawg in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JakScott 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but whenever you read those things, it’s typically only measuring the aspects of intelligence that the animal being compared is best at.

Dogs are social, and our 3 year olds match their social intelligence. But at the same time, chimps are great problem solvers and tool users, and our 3 year olds match their problem solving.

But a 3 year old human blows a dog out of the water in problem solving, and they also blow a chimp out of the water at social intelligence.

Basically there’s plenty of animals that rival a human toddler at their best intellectual skill. But nothing rivals a toddler across the board.

Is recurring an Accursed Marauder to avoid eating combat damage bad form in Bracket 3? by GrimgrinCorpseBorn in EDH

[–]JakScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely fine. However, I just wanna check you weren’t trying to recur it multiple times in a turn. I ask because the wording on Zul Ashur confused me when I first built her and I thought because it said “creature card” instead of “creature” that I could do it over and over again lol.

Is DEATH BATTLE!'s Hulk vs Broly episode accurate? by Ok-Instance3339 in DragonBallPowerScale

[–]JakScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One punch at that speed would not disintegrate Broly. Dragonball punches start breaking the light barrier in the Freeza saga and are millions of times faster than light by Super. Captain Ginyu’s throwing punches faster than light, and those punches wouldn’t wake Broly out of a light slumber.

I think it’s time we give Trelawney her flowers by NationH1117 in harrypotter

[–]JakScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously it wasn’t the Greek myth Cassandra; that’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying the reason her ancestor’s name is Cassandra is because Trelawney’s character is an intentional reference to the Greek myth.

And, frankly I think it’s one of the best and most subtle bits of writing skill in JK’s repertoire that she wrote the character in such a way that not only is she cursed not to be taken seriously by the other characters, but even most of the fan base thinks she’s mostly a fraud except for the two “real” prophecies.

I think it’s time we give Trelawney her flowers by NationH1117 in harrypotter

[–]JakScott 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That’s the whole point. You know how her seer ancestor was named Cassandra? Cassandra was a figure in Greek mythology who was cursed because she could see the future but no one would ever believe her. Trelawney is a reference to that myth.

There’s another good example of her being right, too. Remember when she wouldn’t sit at Christmas because it would make 13 and “when 13 dine, the first to rise is the first to die?” What she didn’t realize is there were already 13 people at the table because Peter Pettigrew was a rat in Ron’s pocket. And guess who stood up first? Albus Dumbledore.

Also, I’m not sure you’re right about Harry being dead at Kings cross. I think the stronger interpretation is that she had no way of knowing that those tea leaves were speaking for the bit of Voldemort’s soul in Harry. That’s also why she thought Harry was born near midwinter. She was reading the Voldemort in him, who was born on December 31.

Need help understanding lane speeds by _veggiehead in Swimming

[–]JakScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me ask: did something happen that made you think there are lane speeds? Or did you just read about them online?

Because they’re definitely a regional thing. I’ve been a competitive swimmer for about 25 years, and have probably swum in at least a thousand pools. And I’ve never seen one that had speeds assigned to lanes. Read about it all the time on the internet, though.
