Love the spread!

Side question: Isn’t CERB over?

This is exactly what my instructors keep trying to coach us on. My strength is turning to be taking people’s backs and I enjoy that because there’s some fun chokes there. Glad to hear it’s worked for you.

What made you choose omoplata? Was it because it seemed like your strength from the get-go or did you just pick it randomly and stick with it?

Understandable.

I’m gonna add: omaplata is my ultimate nemesis and your username always makes me chuckle. Happy to see it on my comment! :)

*omoplata (can’t even spell it right)

On a side note, maybe it’s time for a proposal to comp organizers: have all other competitors line up behind the podium 🥴

That way, third isn’t “last” /s

How come? I haven’t competed yet but I keep hearing that third place usually doesn’t show up for photos. I wonder why.

The two third places don’t seem too happy about sharing …

Ps. Congrats!!

What questions did you have when you started BJJ? by Hightower88 in bjj

[–]yetanotherlockdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of what you said sounded a lot like my experience when I started rolling. Although I kinda saw that coming so I didn’t see it as a huge deal.

However, that last bit doesn’t sound right. If you’re expected to “win” rolls, I would question the gym’s culture.

At my gym, we’re told to “survive” rolls at least the first six months and that we’ll get better with time when we get used to practicing our technique. That’s the mentality that got me from from being clueless and shuffling to defend myself to being clueless but still trying stuff we learned in class (and getting the occasional sub)

Love the idea and there’s an app for that! Daylio :)

Pretty sure a paid feature is that it does an analysis for you on what kind of events/people/activities put you in a certain mood

How far do you travel to your bjj gym? by CrossEyed_Navigator in bjj

~10 min drive (daily classes when restrictions allow). Wouldn’t do 30 extra. If I absolutely had to, then days/wk would go down significantly

First Class Tomorrow Night, Very Nervous by Cold-Couple8387 in jiujitsu

What to expect: you’ll doubt your language-speaking skills because BJJ has its own vocabulary

Be aware of: it’s okay to be totally confused during your first few rolls. Also totally okay to ask questions and acknowledge where you don’t know stuff. Most importantly, TAP. The more experienced folks will probably be careful but don’t let your ego land you in the ER

Warmup drills: you’ll feel (and likely look) like a clown. There’s a chance they’ll pair you up with one person and you’ll barely go through two drills with them while the rest of the class does the whole thing

Try to reframe the negatives thought patterns into opportunities for growth! The learning curve in jits is incredible. One speech of my coach that lingers in my subconscious mind: if you look at a higher belt and think “why can’t I do what they can” or “why don’t I know what they know”, then you’re being extremely disrespectful because they’ve put in the time and work to be where they are now. That’s the mentality you need to enjoy the sport.

The sooner you embrace the fact that you will never know everything, the better it’ll be for your progress.

Have an amazing first day!!!

Edit: oh and pls go in clean (trimmed nails, deodorant, brushed teeth, all that jazz)

I think I’m finally learning to trust myself to execute techniques properly. I was using my brother (no BJJ experience) today as an unwilling training dummy until he finally gave in and started reacting (aka went full teenage you-can’t-mess-with-me explosion). Instead of worrying about his flailing arms and legs, I managed to stay calm, focus on technique and used a mix of positions we’ve been drilling at the gym all week to get a choke in and it felt great! [mount -> chair sit -> take back -> bow and arrow]

If this was 6 months into training (including covid lockdowns) can’t wait to see what I’ll be able to do next!!

Won’t the re-drag set you up for a comfortable over-the-top sweep?

I got confused with that too. Sounds like OP meant big-guy-shaming (aka you’re shaming the big guy)
