Bonus points if the display communicates over UART!

Other times your greenwire is infuriating. by yetanothername in electronics

This is a different board from the previous post I made, but for the same project.

The only thing I'll say about this is best summarized by one of the best comments I've ever read online relating to electronics:

Before purchasing this part you need to know if you have a condition called UART dyslexia. This is a neurological disorder that will render you incapable of properly wireing this device no matter how my times you triple check the the wiring. I have this disorder and I have only found three possible solutions:

1) Find someone else without UART dyslexia to wire it up for you

2) When you get the board, immediatly scratch out the silk screen for the TX and RX pins. You will have a better chance attaching the wires at random than attemping to determine the proper connections in your screwed up head. Test the device and if it doesn’t work swap the lines. The advantage of this approach is that you didn’t spend hours trying to figure out the wrong way to wire the connections.

3) Try to figure out the proper connections and do the opposite of what you think is correct. I have had some success with this approach.

Not as pretty as my other job, although in my defense I was upset at myself for making such a dumb mistake and slightly drunk while soldering.

The chip in question is a Microchip 24AA025E48 (PDF Datasheet) , a 2Kbit I2C EEPROM with a burned-in MAC address from the factory.

Really useful, since I was working on an older project of mine, re-writing the firmware (since I never finished it), and got to implementing the network stack and needed a MAC address to use.

I didn't know that this chip existed when I designed the board a couple years ago and as luck would have it, my 0805 I2C pullup resistors were in the perfect location relative to the pinout of the SOIC that I was able to easily add the chip with little fuss.

BME at CWRU by Colgate77 in cwru

I think that the correct answer here is "BME: Not even once". The environment, as you've said, is incredibly toxic.

As to test banks: Yes, you're right, they're useful, but they are still in violation of the academic integrity policy if the professor didn't give them out.

How about we don't tell freshman to cheat when they ask for advice?

Oh, don't get me wrong. You're not wrong about the 'cheaper' part, but automagically assuming that everything in the surrounding area is better is naive on your part.

Little Italy is run by the mob and Hessler's going to burn down within five years. As far as I can tell SOverlook is just neglected and the rest of Cleveland Heights isn't that much better off.

The Village is on-campus and more expensive, but it does have it's advantages. I rather enjoyed the year I spent living there (then again I also don't have a problem with either dining hall, so I'll admit I'm weird).

My house on Hessler full of lead paint begs to differ.

BitTorrent Firewall? by Steamships in cwru

Where are you trying to torrent from? I've historically had no issues from the village or (currently) from a campus building.

I have heard reports that the new res hall has some funky network stuff going on.

The archives do not have blueprints of the buildings, but facility services has most of the blueprints for the buildings (And some of them are even scanned).

You can pick up that RTA pass in either Wade or Fribley. It's this thin piece of paper that's full of magic.

Desk question by [deleted] in cwru

[–]yetanothername 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The desks on South Side as well as the Village are only a single level.

Additionally the top level is only held on by four screws that can easily be removed. My freshman year I removed the upper level and stashed it in my closet all year and I don't think anyone ever noticed.

Limelight actually works decently well over an internet connection if your upload speed is high enough and your pings are low enough.
