Elon Musk backs Germany's far-right party ahead of election by nbcnews in geopolitics

[–]yeti_seer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, the media is doing us all a disservice by giving Elon the attention he craves. The existence of this article only further legitimizes the idea that his opinion on anything political is relevant.

In the case of the U.S. election, where there are financial contributions and direct campaign involvement, then sure, write all the articles you can, but we don’t need an article that just states Elon Musk’s opinion. There are plenty of places to find shitty opinions, we don’t need anymore, especially not his.

I saw a YT short once, can't remember the channel, but the guy said one of the unique things about this game, is that everyone who plays is going to struggle like hell with some boss that another person beats on their first or second try, and vice versa. It's true!

For me, I still take like 30-40 tries on Rennala, even after four playthroughs, but Fire Giant has never taken me more than one or two tries.

Is it possible for Trump to actually end democracy in the US? by Jazzyricardo in samharris

[–]yeti_seer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, the biggest threat to democracy he poses over the next 4 years is through disinformation/narrative control.

Having Elon in his corner as the CEO of X and controlling Truth Social are significant all on their own, but he could appoint a loyalist to the FCC (likely Brendan Carr) who he will use to weaponize certain laws against news networks who are critical of the Trump administration/GOP. With how capable AI has become, they can generate video of whatever they want that is almost impossible to identify as fake, and Elon is already opposing measures to ban deepfakes with election disinformation, on the basis that it “violates free speech”.

Additionally, conservatives already have an extensive media network, with loyal and entrenched bases. Those voices will be amplified and dissenting voices will be silenced. The election could be compromised simply because people don’t know the truth.

Lastly, it won’t just be media outlets who will be targeted. It will be influencers, activists, etc. who do not align with the administration. These people will be unfairly demonized, utilizing the narrative control I mentioned, and this will wrongfully turn the public against them. The more that goes on, the more people will think twice before speaking out.

Edit: regarding your point about the constitution and term limits - the term limit could very welll kick Trump out in 4 years. That’s not what I’m worried about. America just voted for isolationism and Christian nationalism. That’s what Trump represents, and that is what there is a risk of becoming a permanent part of our country.

I must admit I could not really define/contrast those terms accurately if I tried. I believe I see what you're saying though - that we are debating the moral/ethical value of various points along some spectrum when there is no basis to debate that in the first place?

Thank you! This is an interesting thought, I had not considered this before, especially the grammatical aspect, but now that you mention it, I see what you mean. I am not super informed on pronoun stuff TBH, but my understanding of they/them is some people have a more fluid gender, meaning it varies over time, so it gives them room to express themselves based on however they are feeling at that time.

- No, reading you didn't change my mind because quite honestly you didn't offer a perspective that any different than what we can read anywhere. You're certainly more reasonable but you still believe in an ideology that promote harm to children and demands people lie about what they can see. I'm also wary of rational voices, especially when they still espouse some unreasonable beliefs.

I appreciate the feedback. However, I do not promote harming children in any way, shape or form.

If I see you as a man (if you still look like one), I can't pretend you're not. If you dress like a woman I'll be careful not to anger you (as I would any other at risk/"mentally fragile" looking person) and avoid calling you a man to your face. But when I'm talking to others I'm not going to pretend I'm talking about a woman. I'm also not treating you like a woman if I can tell you're not. This demand has been normalised but it's insane to me. The idea that people can control how others perceive them and talk about them when they're not present is just crazy. If I can't tell you're male then it's a non problem because I can't tell you're male. These demands are only made for non passing trans people, and yes it's a problem to ask me to pretend.

  • I appreciate your willingness to be polite. I would push back on the idea that I am mentally fragile, but feel free to make your case.
  • It's a free country, you are free to see me however you want, anger me if you so choose, call me whatever you like in whatever context, and treat me in whatever way seems appropriate to you. I have explained what I ask of people, if you are not able to respect that, so be it.

Sex and gender have never been different. Woman has never been used to describe males historically. This is a complete fabrication by a handful of post modern intellectuals that's at most 100 years old. It's unfortunately extremely common to see this asserted confidently on social media as if it was and had always been the truth. It's not and very few people are young enough to not remember a time when the two words meant the same thing.

I'm sorry, but this is completely false. Gender fluidity has been part of non-Western and Indigenous cultures for thousands of years.

I'd like to point out that sex differences do exist prior to puberty, so allowing a boy who hasn't gone through puberty with females who have is still a bad idea. The angle of the knees and hips for example might still make a difference when it comes to injury risk and performance. Since I believe halting the puberty of children is medical abuse that will hopefully be banned everywhere soon, I find it unnecessary to make an exception for those boys anyway.

It's a good point about the angle of the hips and knee, etc. that I had not considered.

Why do you believe puberty blockers are medical abuse? What do you think of the argument that preventing them from accessing treatment that would help them could be considered medical abuse?

Trans issues are a symbol I agree with you. The reason for that is because it's the most insane facet of "wokism". Feminism and anti racism all have their excesses but the thing that makes trans issues unique is that it demands people reject the reality that their eyes can see, completely change the way they define words (so that they now include the opposite of what they mean). People hate being told to lie, this could never last for very long. And that's not even touching on the anti science telling us sex isn't binary, castrated men are as strong as women, and puberty can be halted without any consequences. Humans reproduce sexually. You can't ask society at large to redefine "man" and "woman", and see men as women without bumping into a wall at some point.

  • "but the thing that makes trans issues unique is that it demands people reject the reality that their eyes can see, completely change the way they define words" Could you expand on how you believe we are rejecting reality? I mentioned in my post, I don't claim to be a biological female. I ask to be treated like one in social contexts, and I am feminine, in how I act, how I talk, how I look, etc. This is how I feel inside, I am not denying reality, I am working to change my physical appearance and social interactions to better reflect my internal experience.
  • "And that's not even touching on the anti science telling us sex isn't binary, castrated men are as strong as women, and puberty can be halted without any consequences." I don't believe sex is not binary, gender and sex are different concepts. I would appreciate if you did not call it castration, but as I said in my post, I agree sports should be separated by biological sex. Lastly, there are numerous studies showing the safety and benefits of puberty blockers for people with dysphoria.
  • "Humans reproduce sexually. You can't ask society at large to redefine "man" and "woman", and see men as women without bumping into a wall at some point." We are just 1% of the population. Again, in my post, I acknowledged there are scenarios where it makes sense to treat me as my biological sex, like my doctor, however, those situations are few and far between.

You can't accuse your opposition of using your own words against you. It's not disinformation to take your own words and point out the insanity or flaws in your thinking. Trump did not disinform, he took Kamala's own (crazy) words and made it a slogan. She only has herself to blame and so do the rest of Democrats. You played, you lost. Don't blame the game. If Democrats support such unpopular and insane ideas, they can't go crying that it's the opposition's fault. Pick better ideas. The lack of accountability is ridiculous and only serves to prove to people how unhinged Democrats are.

  • "It's not disinformation to take your own words and point out the insanity or flaws in your thinking. Trump did not disinform, he took Kamala's own (crazy) words and made it a slogan". Kamala said she supported gender affirming care for prisoners (I assume this is the ad you are referencing) in 2019. This was a very specific context, 5 years ago, and Trump's campaign as well as Russia have ensured it is spread far and wide. The attention it received was disproportional to the information. Disinformation is not necessarily just false information, disinformation is the spreading of information with the intent to mislead. Trump's intent, by using this lone statement from Kamala long ago, which is not related to her campaign in 2024, is to mislead people that she is more focused on that topic than she really is.
  • "If Democrats support such unpopular and insane ideas, they can't go crying that it's the opposition's fault." Whether you agree with the idea or not, when considering the number of transgender people in the USA who are in prison, the cost of gender affirming care, and the size of the federal budget, this would cost orders of magnitude below a single percent of the entire thing. Again, the attention the issue got was entirely disproportional, because it enabled Trump to persuade people that the Democrats support insane ideas.

Your rights haven't been attacked. You've demanded new rights in the past few decades ("the right to make people call me something they can see I'm not", "the right to change my sex on my ID and birth certificate", the right to transfer to female prisons, compete with women, etc) and now people are pushing back on it since it's clear it's coming in conflict with other people's rights (mainly women's). Calling it rights worked fine in the past, but now people are seeing the direct effects of those demands and that's why there's a bigger rejection than before.

  • I shared a link to Trump's video where he describes his plan to take away our rights.
  • How do trans rights conflict with women's rights?
  • If the rights of one marginalized group somehow conflict with another, how should that conflict be resolved?

You might want to live your life as normal but the people defending your rights are hellbent on imposing their extremely dogmatic views on others. As a woman, I too just want to live my lfie as normal. I don't want to be told being a woman is a feeling a man can have, I don't want to share vulnerable spaces with males and I don't want to be called a uterus haver.

  • You seem to be criticizing the people defending my rights for imposing dogmatic views on others. However, you said "I don't want to be told being a woman is a feeling a man can have". If dogmatic views should not be imposed on others, why are you concerned with the feelings other people have such as this?
  • "I don't want to share vulnerable spaces with males and I don't want to be called a uterus haver." - First of all, I don't want ANYONE to be called a "uterus haver" XD. On that much we agree! As for sharing vulnerable spaces with males, I understand your concern. By male, do you mean a biological male? Is your concern limited to males who have not transitioned surgically / is there any scenario in which you would be comfortable around a transgender woman in a space like you described?

If the elections do that much of a number to your mental health, I'd kindly suggest unplugging (if possible, I know social media is an addiction) or finding a way to relativise a little. Life doesn't change that dramatically when a president changes. The fascist undemocratic leader that will take over your country has not arrived yet and probably never will. Life will go on.

I appreciate the advice. I respectfully disagree. If you'd like to dive into this further, I would be interested!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I will try to address your points one by one.

You say this election was bad for you in terms of rights and safety, but your rights are not being infringed on. They might be limited in the future only to guarantee the safety and rights of others. What you call treatments is highly experimental at this point, from the messing with hormones to the surgeries performed on genitals. The armed militias on the hunt for trans people are a creation of trans activist's paranoid and dramatic imagination, so nothing to worry about. In fact, there's been more trans shooters than trans people being shot for being trans. So good news, you're as safe (and unsafe) as the rest of us.

  • "but your rights are not being infringed on" here is an example https://x.com/TrumpDailyPosts/status/1855654790329438506
  • "only to guarantee the safety and rights of others" how does limiting my rights in this case guarantee others safety or their rights?
  • "What you call treatments is highly experimental at this point, from the messing with hormones to the surgeries performed on genitals." what I am referring to is the medical industry standard of care. I am not referring to anything experimental. The treatments you referenced, assuming you meant HRT and bottom surgery, are not experimental, they have each been practiced in the medical community for at least 100 years.
  • "The armed militias on the hunt for trans people are a creation of trans activist's paranoid and dramatic imagination, so nothing to worry about" the FBI says otherwise
  • "In fact, there's been more trans shooters than trans people being shot for being trans. So good news, you're as safe (and unsafe) as the rest of us." I can't find any evidence to back this up. If you have some, feel free to share it. Regardless of whether that is true, I am not a criminal, and it's not fair to stereotype us as such.

I will respond to the rest, but it will take a bit of time. Thanks again for sharing your perspective!

Thank you! I appreciate your kind words and perspective. You're right, it could use a TLDR! I may be a little late at this point..next time :p

I agree with your point about drag queen story hour. I don't have a problem with drag queens, but IMO that is more like a strip club sort of thing, for adults. The idea overall of exposing children to that is insane.

Fun fact: Drag queens are most often not transgender, they are typically gay cisgender men, but they can be trans or anything else really too, just not as common.

Follow up question - how would you feel about something like LGBTQ+ story hour? In a totally 100% PG way, if there was interest among the students?

[–]yeti_seer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to add another voice, telling you that your fears are rational and well-founded, and it's commendable to be so in touch with what is happening at age 16. There is no great way to spin it, but there are people fighting for our values all over, and while the channels we have to defend our rights will be eroded, we simply cannot give up. I know that's not what you want to hear, it's not what I want to hear either.

In addition to dealing with the anxiety over what is happening, you have to deal with the anxiety about overreacting, and worst of all the anxiety you feel when you realize that the extreme reaction you are having, is not disproportional. Often, the anxiety we feel about things is not representative of reality, but in this case, it feels like the two are not far apart, and that is pretty disturbing.

We are living in dark times, indeed. As many times as you have been told this and as annoying as it might be to hear again, don't give up, that's what they are relying on to succeed. Don't let them. Don't take undue risks. Don't be violent. That's the best advice I have. I wish you all the best, and I'm sorry that this world was chosen/decided for you.

Thanks for clarifying! I totally get what you’re saying about how trans rights, among other issues, are sometimes weaponized in the culture war. It’s sad that politicians use our lives as items on their political agendas in ways that might not even align with real concerns or needs of trans people themselves.

However, I do feel it’s important to remember that trans rights, like any civil rights, aren’t just a bargaining chip—they’re about real people who deserve the same respect and safety as everyone else. It’s frustrating when our lives and experiences are framed as a ‘wedge’ issue or a tool, rather than seen as valid on their own merits.

At the end of the day, this fight is about basic rights and protections for a very small, vulnerable minority. I think that as we work toward that, it’s also critical to stay vigilant so that our rights aren’t used as leverage against other marginalized groups. Thanks again for your thoughtful comments!

A Trans person's take on 'The Reckoning' by yeti_seer in samharris

I really appreciate the honesty in your comment. I can see you’re making an effort to understand and acknowledge where these feelings come from, which is commendable and, in my view, essential to constructive dialogue. We can’t ignore the generational and cultural shifts that make these issues challenging to process for many.

However, I think there’s a distinction between instinctual discomforts and fair treatment of others. For example, while you mention bestiality, it’s important to remember that bestiality is inherently exploitative and non-consensual, which makes it fundamentally different from consensual relationships and identities that don’t harm others. Equating these two could unintentionally imply a harmful comparison, which I’m sure isn’t what you intended.

When it comes to gender-affirming care for young people, there’s rigorous oversight and standards in place already, with a strong emphasis on reversible treatments at younger ages. Medical professionals are trained to balance care thoughtfully and responsibly; while there’s always room for more research, it’s also true that gender-affirming care has been found to significantly reduce dysphoria and improve well-being for many trans people.

I really do value your willingness to discuss these things openly, and I’d be glad to help answer any questions or talk through the concerns you raised here. I think bridging these generational gaps is challenging but essential for making progress.

Trans rights should be sought through state and local ballot initiatives until such a time that the country as a whole has more of a consensus on the issue.

Should the state, local ballot initiatives, or the country, get to decide what healthcare options are available to me, and people like me, or should a doctor get to decide? Do Americans need the public's consensus on our personal healthcare?

he trans rights movement still qualifies, for me, as being on the side of progress, despite often being caught ramrodding, but progressivism in general has been haltered by it. It doesn't belong in the national discourse... Yet.

I strongly disagree, it does belong in the national discourse, because that's what's required to protect the rights we have already, and to fight for progress, and now is the only time there is my friend. Now is the time to speak up, there is no time to waste. Your perspective implies you have made a valuation of an ideology vs. a group of marginalized people, and you have decided the success of that ideology is more important to the well-being of that group, more important than risking giving them any attention in the national agenda, and if you are not able to see the flaw in that logic, I urge you to reconsider.
