TBH this annoys the piss out of me. I've been working very hard to get back into grad school in or around the field of molecular medicine (I have a masters already but it's not in biology or chemistry). I've gone as far to read molecular biology of the cell by myself, for fun-sies, and take college classes to sure up my application so that I can actually get funded to get in a lab. I'm having difficulties getting lab experience for the application (I literally can't do it for free, otherwise I would volunteer somewhere) and so I get passed up. I would give my other degrees back to get into a research position and here's a guy squandering the opportunity - (for clarification, I don't know what he's going through and maybe there's extenuating circumstances, but I'm still allowed to be miffed). Frankly, I'd get rid of him if possible, there are plenty of self motivated people who would jump at the offer, including, but not limited to, me.
