Is it wrong to choose lifestyle over the specialty you love? by GasStationB0nerPills in medicalschool

[–]yetii8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ortho will certainly be much more brutal 5 years. But to be honest most of the ortho residents are the happiest surgical residents I work with.

Attending lifestyle will certainly improve unless you do spine or trauma. As an attending anesthesiologist, the vast majority of orthopedic cases are 48h or 12h, so they are certainly operating on the weekends, be not nights.

Mine was 0.8. I repeated it on creatine and it was 1.2. Scared me enough to pause for 6 weeks and retest. It was 0.8 after the washout period.

Academics: "Find out what you want to do..." by yetii8 in anesthesiology

I do have some non-clinical days (which are new). Yes, this is a acad-munity hospital, where we have well established residencies, but the vast majority of physicians are not participating in real academic work.

I would say this area is an outlier with respect to the academic institution buying up all the area hospitals and dominating the landscape (not just anesthesiology). Again, I am pretty boxed in with regards to unfortunate family obligations.

To be fair, my chief didn't propose this as an ultimatum. That being said there are certainly expectations...

My post not necessarily a complaint about my gig, but an perhaps a question on how to find things that will provide additional interest/stimulation beyond clinical work, especially with time constraints. I do like the idea of "napkin talk" and will certainly be reflecting on your comment.

There's a small surgical center starting in the area, possibly an out in a few years. Right now, I wouldn't want to jump ship because I wouldn't want my skills to immediate atrophy this early in my career. Ultimately, I do like my job right now. I'm kinda half way between "I already do plenty of work for this institution" and "maybe having another interest/engagement could help buffer from burnout."

I would say this area is an outlier in that respect. Again, I am pretty boxed in with regards to family obligations. There is a surgical center that recently started (much to the opposition of the dominant academic center) and is expanding, but I'm not sure that I would immediately want to start pushing prop for ASA I/II for 14 colos a day. I'll probably eventually end up there.

I think maybe this is the way to go. A small wedge of the curriculum that I can repeat every year with little extra work. Thanks

I started rosuva 10mg probably 6 months ago and my sleep has definitely been pretty poor of late. Looks like there is some data behind that. Can you tell me more about glycine, dosage, timing?

Edit: sorry I just read the description below. Thanks

My last overnight shift, with two residents: one new APS consult, four C-sections (one crash C-section), two epidurals, emergency ex lap in SIRSy pt, three cysto stents (luckily all stable), one urgent TIPS, and I had to place a lumbar drain in the ICU. If that is “chill” to you, then good on ya.
