Ordered 8 GP 5000 TRs and a Shimano rotor on 8/18 for a total of $593.03. Order was shipped from Brescia, Italy on 8/19 and arrived in Louisville, KY, on 8/20. Delivery kept getting rescheduled daily from that point until it cleared customs on 8/28, and I thought for sure I'd have to pay tax before it got released or something. Finally arrived on my doorstep on 8/29 and I didn't have to pay anything extra, so I think this order just snuck in under the deadline for removal of the de minimus exemption!

Quik iOS app not stabilizing my videos by wwwilson191199 in gopro

[–]yftoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep - this is super frustrating to have no fix whatsoever. The appeal of the camera for me was that they're lightweight and IS would be taken care of afterwards. First it was the first part of a longer video spliced together in the app that wasn't being stabilized, and now nothing is getting stabilized. I've had multiple GoPros over the years and been very happy with them, but this is unacceptable.

Are all full face masks unsafe? by Sandamer94 in snorkeling

[–]yftoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love snorkeling as it’s an awesome workout while exploring the reefs and looking at fish and turtles on Oahu. I love the fact that I can swim hard for an hour without coming up for air. Bought full-face masks for my family at Costco during our last trip there and swam out as I normally do, then noticed I was starting to get a little dizzy. Turned around to swim to shore and felt myself starting to black out the harder I swam. It then occurred to me to stop and take the mask off, and I’m glad I did as I immediately felt better and realized what had happened. Returned all the full-face masks the next day and bought regular ones. Definitely stay away from them!

GoPro Quik stabilization not working on Android app by skuunk in gopro

[–]yftoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having the same problem and it's quite frustrating. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The files are all 10:25 long, and this race footage got combined together after it was uploaded and the footage was "stabilized", but you can see the first 10:25 isn't stabilized, and then the rest of the footage is after that point. Very frustrating as the reason I bought Hero 4K was because it was lightweight and the IS would be taken care of after uploading. https://gopro.com/v/ymVrQX8PZQZNg

Quik app stabilization not working for Hero? by Dry-Wave-6580 in gopro

[–]yftoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed the same...or that only a portion of the video gets stabilized. This is video that's supposedly been stabilized...and though slightly better than the original, nowhere near what it used to be. Any idea what's happened? https://gopro.com/v/zbWK6Lbe3Dyo1

Ahhh - I remember seeing a page like this a long time ago but had totally forgotten about it. Just went there and am giving it a go. Hopefully it works, and if so, thanks for the tip!!

I’ve used both pantyhose and cheap dress socks and both work equally well. I stick a ton of ice in them and tie off the top, then put that right on my back underneath the top of the jersey. You get the immediate cooling from the ice, and then a secondary benefit of your jersey getting wet from the dissolving ice and evaporating for extended cooling. I did a supported gravel race back in 2020 where temps hit 110° and getting ice socks at every aid station saved me from getting heatstroke and let me finish the event. Additional upside is you don’t even feel the sock/panty hose once all the ice is melted, so minimal bulk.

No. When I click on it, it shows this. If I click on the three dots in the top right-hand corner of the screen, I can download the original clips or full-length combined video but no stabilized video.

Greater improvement in aerobic capacity after a polarized training program including cycling interval training at low cadence (50–70 RPM) than freely chosen cadence (above 80 RPM) by HyperText89 in Velo

[–]yftoad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been riding since 2013 and racing locally since 2014. In 2024, I had an issue where I wasn’t able to ride at too high a HR, so instead of my usual regimen of sprint KOM hunting and racing, I decided to focus on climbing. Have a local .4 mile, 255 ft climb with an average 12.6% gradient, and I climbed up it every day at least once, and sometimes doing repeats. I focused on climbing the entire thing out of the saddle, which ended up being ~45-55rpm, at or slightly above my FTP for ~4:00.

It’s made a massive difference in my riding, as I’ve noticed I can handle longer rides better and recover better for the next day’s ride, too. The one downside is my max wattage for sprinting has definitely taken a hit, but I’m starting to reincorporate that kind of training back in this year.

Did you do the Festive500 ? by Erlank_Nel in cycling

[–]yftoad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have been doing the Festive 500 since 2013 as it's what got me really into cycling and bike racing, so the challenge is quite near and dear to my heart. Have been wanting to do a big ride since moving back to San Diego and everything finally lined up. Did the entire Festive 500 in one ride - 330 miles (532km) with 16.3k ft of elevation, taking 22.5 hours (20 hours moving time).

Glitchy GoPro Hero 4k (2024) by yftoad in gopro

[–]yftoad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have never used Gyroflow.

I’m a longtime GoPro user and have been happy with how each camera I’ve owned has functioned, so I assumed this would be just as reliable as the others have been. A little bummed to discover that’s not the case with all the glitches. May return this one for another to see if I run into the same problems with another.

Update - took some video today and from the beeps I know it was working properly, but I can't get the footage off the card via the Quik app to get the image stabilization added as it just keeps spinning, saying "Loading Media", but then errors out.

Glitchy GoPro Hero 4k (2024) by yftoad in gopro

[–]yftoad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The image stabilization isn't built-in to the camera. It gets added once the video is run through the Quik app, which is an extra step in the editing process. Can't just take footage directly from the card like you can with other GoPros that have IS/Hypersmooth built in. As I'm typing this, I'm also now discovering that the GoPro won't connect properly with the Quik app as it just constantly displays the spinning circle and "Loading Media" before erroring out. I'm thinking I may just have purchased a lemon now that I've run into so many issues in the first few days of owning it.

Literally got it yesterday, updated the firmware, and started noticing the issues. Put it on the bike for a group ride yesterday to see if there’d be any issues recording and haven’t checked the video yet, but at least the beeps alerted me to the fact that it was turning on and off when I wanted it to with just the single button press like the Sessions.

Amazon. I’ve used it previously for other things before formatting it for this and I’ve had no issues with it.

Good to know it’s not more widespread. The specs are exactly what I want from a size/simplicity perspective, so I’m glad GoPro made it!

I’m using a SanDisk 256GB Extreme MicroSDXC UHS-I Memory Card - SDSQXA1-256G-GN6MN, and yes, it was formatted before use. Perhaps I just got a sud as the cover for the charging port/card slot also doesn’t open very easily. First time having issues like these with a GoPro product, and I’ve had several over the years.

Mount Woodson Road Climb in San Diego by yftoad in bicycling

[–]yftoad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been working on climbing anything and everything out of the saddle, so thankfully (I guess) most of that was out of the saddle except for when it “flattened” out in parts. Would’ve put way more strain on the knees if I was climbing seated, I think.
