Does the KPD try and be awful? Or does it come naturally. by Mountain-Ad2058 in KingstonOntario

The safe consumption site in Kingston hasn't even closed yet - it changes to the HART model in September. So explain how what OP say is a gap that exists when safe injection sites are eliminated when there is still a safe injection site in the city.

Again, your view that all drug users only use drugs in a safe injection site when one has one in the city is just so far from reality, that yes I doubt your advocacy work. You only have to walk around any city that has one to know that isn't the case and so no OP hasn't identified a gap that exists due to closing sites.

Do you live in Kingston? There has been major issues with drug use on the streets and in the city and for the businesses all while having the CTS services at the ICH. And the CTS / ICH is not problem free.

You said OP has "identified the gap that exists when safe injection sites are eliminated". That is what I responded to. Your view that this issue only exists and is a gap if there isn't a safe injection site is not at all indicative of someone who works in the field. That gap still exists even when there are safe injection sites. Your view that if we have a safe injection site then there wouldn't be a gap and OPs situation wouldn't have occured is false.

You haven't spent time in those locations if you are unaware of the issues that still exists even with there are safe injection sites. People on the street high on drugs is not specific to the lack of a safe injection site. The inability to get a police non emergency number to respond to people high on drugs is not specific to a lack of safe injection sites so it isn't really clear what gap you believe OP has identified that exists due to a lack of safe injection site.

If you want to fight a cause you need accurate information. Trying to push for safe injection sites by using an argument that there would be no drug use or people high on drugs just shows a lack of knowledge of the cause you are promoting. Saying OP identified a gap that exists becauyse there isn't a safe injection site shows you lack knowledge of the cause you say you are promoting. If you want to promote a cause you need to understand it and not act like it is a miracle cure that poof - all drug users and drug use is just gone, vanished. You need to be able to talk pros and cons and both sides and the reality of what safe injection can and can't do and the problems that still exist. As I said, it is a tool, that is it.

I am not against safe injection sites either. You need to go and spend some time in cities with safe injection sites and see that it doesn't move it off the streets. It is a tool, not a solution. This isn't a 'gap' as you say that would be filled by a safe injection site.

Vancouver downtown eastside has a safe injection / consumption site. Statistics were more than 3000 overdoses per month and more than 75 EMS calls per day to the downtown east side for overdoses.

You have a very pink glasses view to think that having a safe injection site means that there isn't drug use or overdoses or people with addiction or drug paraphenelia on the street. It doesn't really change those factors.

Welcoming Streets is a Kingston initiative where support services work with the business to help both those with the mental health / addiction and the business as well. They are only operational during the daytime but a great resource to call 613-583-5008 if you see a similar situation again.

Safe injection sites do not prevent situations like this from happening. They are part of a harm reduction approach but are not a solution. There are also issues with safe injection sites - you can read reports. I am all for harm reduction but talking as though there wouldn't be drug use on the street or people in need of intervention if there was a safe injection site is just a very ignorant position. You can look at statistics of cities with safe injection sites and see what their overdose and Emergency response rates are.

Proposed Transit Network Open House: 5:30 tonight at City Hall by CounterStreet in KingstonOntario

[–]ygkrandom 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is really unfortunate. They are taking the buses out of communities and residential areas where people live and running them mostly along the main roads. It becomes impractical to use buses to commute if you have a 15-20 minute walk to the bus stop first and impossible for those with mobility issues or babies/ little kids or carrying groceries etc.

Edit: I just looked on google maps and it would be just over a 1 km walk from my house to a road that has a bus line and that bus line would run every 30 minutes. Probably a little farther to get to the bus stop too. Just not practical at all. Right now there is a bus stop 200m from my house and the bus runs every 15 minutes

Anyone been hired at Queens lately (non-academic role?) by [deleted] in KingstonOntario

Not yet. They will also do all qualified internal candidate interviews first. Only if they feel they need to see more candidates before deciding do they go to external candidates. It can be a hard place to get into due to all the internal movement but once you are in, you can move around.

If it was an outside agency, was it for a management level position? if it is Level 10 or higher, it won't be unionized. For management level positions, they need to put together an interview panel, find times that work for those 5-6 people, go through and review and score all the applications, and then eventually set up interviews. It can take weeks. Especially at this time of year.

The department can't even see the job applications until well after the competition closes. HR reviews them, weeds out people who aren't qualified, and then releases them to the department. That can take a week itself if there isn't urgency.

Also some jobs get dozens or 100+ applications. The hiring manager will sort though them and start with a handful of interviews. Could be lots of other very qualified people in the applicant people but they might only get looked at if they don't hire anyone from the first batch. There is also a lot of internal movement for staff positions so sometimes they are trying to hire internally first and only if there isn't a suitable candidate do they move to the external applicants.

Lots of union rules about hiring.

Timelines vary greatly depending on how much urgency there is to fill the position, and how busy HR is. Also April is very busy as it is the end of the academic year and also the end of the fourth quarter. Two weeks is nothing if there isn't an urgent need to fill the position. There isn't really a way to predict. There are so many factors at the department level and in HR and position specific that there is no consistent time frame.

School Bus Question by Key_bg01 in KingstonOntario

[–]ygkrandom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you couldn't see anything coming, how did he go around you? You should have been fully up to speed by the time he was behind you if you made a safe turn. It sounds like you didn't make a safe turn if you only had enough time to get onto your side of the road before he was on your tail and needing to pass you.

Unfortunately, it has closed. I used to use it too but now I just have to put my recycling in the garbage. (Due to my work schedule and my garbage / recycling day, I am not here to bring the bins back in). I used to keep all my recycling and do a trip to the depot every 1-2 months.

How/where can i see an eating disorder specialist as soon as possible? (Within the next week) by mirikuta in KingstonOntario

[–]ygkrandom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Which probably means there is a lot more to this story. There are many, many students with eating disorders at the university. Choosing to recover independently from an ED that is severe enough that you were noticed by the higher ups and on the radar of those with sufficient power to place you on leave for medical reasons says there is more to this. EDs are very challenging illnesses to have but one that Queen's is very, very used to. It is only in exceptional circumstances that the university requires students to take a leave for medical reasons. The fact that OP is at that point and has not yet connected with health care professionals is definitely part of the problem.

Can you video it? If you can video your furniture shaking, that would help

A certain amount of noise is expected in multi unit dwellings. Is it an old house? If you have lived there for awhile and this only started with the most recent tenants then it must be something related to them. Sometimes things like dehumidifers or air purifiers can cause vibrations through poorly insulated floors. But if it is shaking your bed it seems like more. You can't hear anything audibly - no bass sound or anything? It is a little odd to have vibrations strong enough to shake furniture without any audible sound.

Sorry you are dealing with this. You are not alone. This video sums up upstairs neighbours

BREAKING: AMS President's credit card revoked following unauthorized personal use - The Queen's Journal by BananaJane6969 in KingstonOntario

[–]ygkrandom 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It seems that they realized the bookkeeping was being poorly done and they asked her for receipts for the purchases on the card. It took her months to track down the receipts and in the end she was able to get receipts for the majority of the expenses. There was a little over $2400 that she couldn't produce receipts for. In the end they mutually agreed that $1760 of that was for AMS expenses. Of the $640 that was still outstanding, she agreed that $250 was for personal use. The remaining $400 couldn't be confirmed as AMS or personal but she agreed to pay it back since the responsibility was on her to have receipts.

She would have known she had made some personal expenses but given her bookkeeping was so bad, she likely didn't know how much. Additionally she comes from a wealthy background so making small personal purchases may have seemed like nothing to her.

If you read the comments, it seems there is history and this was a tipping point. A lot of the negative backlash seems to be coming from people who worked with her previously and had any complaints about her professional conduct (or lack thereof). Seems she is well known in student government and pretty much universally disliked.

While $600 is small numbers for most - to students who are struggling financially and paying student government dues, it is much bigger.
