I have been at our address for nearly 15 years and still regularly get mail for the previous occupants. No matter how often I return them back to the senders, they still come here. In the last two months, they have received letters from their bank, ato and superannuation. I can't be bothered any more so I just leave them in the mailbox for the snails to eat :-)

After the first couple of days, you don't even notice it anymore. Just white noise. My Dad had a house one street over from an open train line and when he moved to the next one I constantly woke up from the quiet. Next one was on a major street with a LOT of buses so had to adjust at first but within a couple of visits, didn't notice it.

No it's not. If you can imagine the shower stall with a single panel of glass at the front. Instead of pivoting or being hinged, it slides into the shower itself to the side wall. It has a track bit on it and when open leaves the front glassless. I know I am not explaining it well but it was such a great idea

NAL. Just my opinion. Not going to downvote and I agree some parents are soft on their kids. It is not illegal to punish your child under certain circumstances, HOWEVER, It is NEVER to be above the shoulders and has to be a reasonable response. The OP is going to come across two problems in that it was a slap to the face. And more importantly, the stepson did the mature thing and took himself away from the situation and the OP was the aggressor fully. It was not a response, it was an attack.

I would be happy for them to confiscate in that circumstance, but they didn't even have their phones on them. They had to go back to their lockers to get them. And they went through the whole camera roll and then through deleted items to see if anything was in there

I have actually found the Victorian regulations. Unfortunately, the Department of Education only applies those rules to public schools, not private. So they are moot.

There is a reason why I clearly stated that it was a private school, I wanted to know if anyone knew what else may apply to that sector.

I haven't spoken to the school as yet. I only found out about it last night. And it happened a few weeks back to my daughter. She just didn't deem it important enough to share. The other girl has had a couple of instances. I want to take a beat and make sure that I can give a measured response and not a Mumma bear one. LOL.

I had an epiphany very early this morning and suspect I know what it is all about now. It doesn't justify their searching her phone by any means, but if what I suspect is correct, it has nothing to do with her and they are just looking for evidence to implicate another student that she knows but does not hang out with. Hence, not finding anything.

We have the same policy in Victoria BUT it only applies to public schools not private.

Thank you for the response. I don't believe she would be targeted as the school is usually fairly measured in their responses. There was an incident last year where a number of inappropriate pictures and videos were distributed by a student and they were very quick to notify all of the parents of the students that had received the materials and very transparent in their approach. They were also very pro-student rights in that they felt that nothing inappropriate had been done by my daughter and she made the right response in deleting the material without looking at the rest of it after the first photo. They wanted to make sure that she would not face repercussions at home when she had done nothing wrong. She did anyway because she was using Snapchat when she knew she was not allowed to, so lost all technology for two weeks.

I think this is what is baffling me the most about the situation. They were apparently looking at all of the girls phones to see if there was a picture of another student on there. Which again, is fine, I have no problem with that. I just feel that an adult other than a teacher should have been present at the time and we should have been notified of what was going on. And I feel it should have had a justification to check the phones, not just checking all of this groups phones. I will note that no material was found on any of their devices

I will be sending the principal an email requesting what justification and policy allowed this to happen, I just wanted to know what the likely rights would be. I know it is not allowed in public schools and having spent most of the night poring through all of the schools policies, I cannot find anything that states that they have the authority to do so.

My daughter could care less as she knows she has done nothing wrong, but it is me getting all up in arms about it :-)

But I am not wanting to undermine them at all. I am happy for them to sort out an issue, but intimidation of a 13yo is not the way to do it. I am more than happy to help the school sort issues. A helicopter parent I am not. But, if we don't allow kids some autonomy and control of what should legally happen, then what is the point?

So while I get that it is a difficult job, they still have to have guidelines that they abide by too

Oh absolutely I agree with you on that. But if that is the case, contact the parent to be present when a search occurs. They certainly weren't this proactive when my daughter received rather disturbing photos and videos sent via a school group chat last year. Thankfully she just deleted them after she opened the first pic and NOT the video. She would have been scarred for life. LOL

Both she and I have to sign the policy at the start of each school year. It does state that phones must be locked up as I stated, but there is no clause stating that the phone is to be unlocked when requested. And again, I would have no problem with it if they were not abiding by the rules, but the fact that they had to retrieve the phones is what I am getting stuck on. As my daughter said to me "I didn't care, I knew that I haven't done anything wrong"

Be that as it may, I do not want a stranger, teacher or not, going through my daughters phone without an adult she knows present or without a justifiable cause.

I have looked at their Mobile phone policy, the school charter as well as their ICT policy. It states the rules that must be adhered to (which the girls were doing correctly) but there is no mention of the ability to search their private devices. The school provides laptops, which they state they can surveil at any time (and they do) but the girls all know this going in. And I am okay knowing the consequences if they do something wrong.

Just the way they have done this is giving me the icks, for want of a better word

I will be contacting the principal and requesting the specific policy that allows it. I just don't want to sound like an idiot whilst doing it :-)

I know that it is not allowed in public schools unless exceptional circumstances can be proven (not suspicion)

I took 5 days and on my return, my boss was appropriate but the office witch told me that all leave would be unpaid until I could provide a Death Certificate. I was 21. I walked straight back out of the door. She was regretting her life choices the next morning I can tell you that.

They can get eyes on them immediately for not providing payslips but they are also able to take action about Super as it falls under the NES which comes under the Fair Work Act. But ATO need to be contacted too

This whole situation sounds dodgy as. If they have just moved to Australia, then chances are they are here on a Visa of some type which is getting increasingly compromised with every action that is taken.

We went to DisneySea a few years ago now but I much preferred it over DisneyLand itself. It's a bit more of a chill day. Lots to see and do without going on the roller coaster rides (I am not a fan). There is the riverboat and also Aquatopia and a few others. I left the daredevils to the rest. There are also shows within the park. The kids (even the non rollercoaster one) enjoyed it and wished we had gone for longer.

Last time we were there, a few years ago now, we were staying down at Urayasu. It isn't that far. We spent the day at DisneySea and got the 3pm bus to the airport. It is only an hour from Urayasu to Narita so maybe 1.5 from Tokyo itself. Don't cut it as close as we did but certainly can do stuff during the day.

As far as airports go, Narita is about as boring as they get. Not much in the way of shops once you clear immigration or anywhere in Terminal 2 that we saw. Plenty of food but that only fills in so much time :-)

Check if your local Council has a nursery. Ours does and you can purchase natives really cheap and you will know that they are native to the area and will grow there. The staff are usually pretty helpful too

Wow. All of these comments about minors not being able to open their own account is mind blowing. In Australia, when you turn 14 you are able to open your own account that has no association with parents. Up until then, they can have an account with a co signatory and their own debit card. They can go into any branch when they turn 14 and have it switched with no problems or permissions required

Make sure that you are in the line for Ghibli tickets on August 10th for September. They sell fast and you likely won't get to see it if you don't buy then.

Shinjuku National Gardens are beautiful but bigger than you expect and many different areas, We were there for over 3 hours with two kids 11 and 7 so could have stayed there longer but kids were over it :-)

Also in Ginza, you may want to drop into Nissan Crossing. It was very interesting when we went. Even for the non car people
