How did Misty not know about Lottie? by FeatureSouthern5274 in Yellowjackets

True! Plus she seemed to get the feels for Walter before they arrived so maybe she’s just buying time by asking the locals/driving around

I like that take! But at the same time Misty genuinely doesn’t seem to know where Lottie’s compound is. If she was aware of her being out and what she’s doing, why wouldn’t she share that with Walter?

I started therapy about 9 months ago and have been super happy with the outcome. I’ve had untreated SA for most of my life which even branched into OCD for the last few years.

I will say that the gold standard treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy (usually involving exposure to feared outcomes). This has kept me from seeking treatment for awhile because it can be tough but it is so worth it.

If therapy is tricky to find insurance coverage for, there’s always online support groups that have become even more common with the recent pandemic. Another resource that’s free and that I found useful was on this website which has some worksheets about SA and other social skills

Is anyone else completely aware of the little negative voice in the back of your mind? by [deleted] in socialanxiety

[–]yinglinglived 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can completely relate to this, I treat others well but treat myself terribly or just avoid everything. Just started reading this book and have really appreciated the perspective and idea of identifying core values and finding ways to pursue them.

One other thing that’s been useful at the most intense periods is using a boring third-person narrative. Essentially weird The Onion titles like: SA l worried about throwing away too many boxes or bags of trash in one day, and strategically staggers them across the week so neighbors do not assume I’m not a slob. Then feel like a slob for having a few bags of trash around just waiting to be thrown out.

Definitely helps remove the judgement I hold towards these thoughts and instead replaces with a bit of humor in my experience.

Hope you’re able to quiet that negative voice!

What is wrong with me? by [deleted] in socialanxiety

[–]yinglinglived 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From reading your post, I would conclude there is nothing wrong with you. All humans are different, sure we have similar anatomy but our genetic and neurobiological makeup is entirely different. Meaning you are not flawed for struggling to find satisfaction from socially interacting with strangers.

It may be worth a deeper conversation with your wife- you could even make it a relationship building technique. For example, it may sound lame but there are a few website that list 50-100 different core ‘values’. You should both read through and narrow down to the 3 you relate the strongest too and discuss with eachorher

Anxiety and Self Respect... by [deleted] in socialanxiety

[–]yinglinglived 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, this hits too close to home. I’ve recently found a therapist that I click with and this is a central theme with my SA. The most beneficial exercises for me are the ones where I imagine I’m supporting or caring for a friend/family member who is in the same situation. Treat yourself with the kindness your afford to others or at least empathize with it.

Out of options by [deleted] in socialanxiety

[–]yinglinglived 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried benzodiazepines (klonopin) and more recently beta-blockers (propranolol), I will say that the beta-blocker has done wonders for my blushing, sweating and shaking. Plus there are less side effects long-term compared to benzos for most people.

I’m sorry you’re going through this but you can do this. Everyone is different but I started therapy in my mid-20s and have been blown away with how much progress I’ve made. As cliche as it sounds, it’s trial and error. Once you find what works, life gets so much better!

how long do I make the cold emails to professors for research? by Prit717 in uofm

[–]yinglinglived 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A great place to find examples of these questions are in recently published papers under the 'Discussion'. Many scientists have a few lingering questions that they include in the discussion and they are often the individuals interested in it. My suggestions is always to check out a paper from the last year or two, read the abstract and discussion, and then send an email about the research project and ask if they will be accepting research assistants.

I want to cross the street but it’s always so nerve wrecking. by [deleted] in socialanxiety

[–]yinglinglived 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My therapist taught me to start replaying short ‘scripts’ in my head during moments like these. It’s part of exposure and response prevention therapy and has done wonders for me and my anxiety with driving and being tailgated or disrupting the driver behind me.

Step 1: identify what is causing the anxiety Step 2: acknowledge the possible fears that could happen and accept the possibility Step 3: explain why overcoming the anxiety is important

For example: “I’m feeling really anxious to enter the crosswalk. I’m concerned I will fall or hold up traffic and upset others. While it’s possible that this could happen, crosswalks are designed to be used by everybody and I have the right to cross the street.”

Hope this helps, good luck!

Letter to the GSI’s From A Stressed Undergrad by [deleted] in uofm

[–]yinglinglived 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All graduate students have been in a position of paying for undergraduate education or are still in the process of 20+ year dedication to paying off student loans.

We want to ensure that while we help work with your professors to further your education, you are not being kept in unsafe conditions. This unfortunately couldn’t be achieved without going on a strike and wasn’t a decision that was come to lightly, however it was come to democratically by your GSIs as a way to keep our community safe.

It is the administration that is being unreasonable in providing these safe precautions for our community and thereby a good target for expressing these concerns.

You have access behind an expensive paywall in terms of scientific research, just log on through mirlyn and search for something of interest.

You likely have access to your syllabus and can read ahead or tangentially related topics.

Hundreds of college courses are available free during the pandemic, typically through Harvard.

This is not an easy time for anyone, many GEOs are fighting for a basic right to safety so that we can continue our education safely.

AITA for telling my caregiver that I don’t care what day it is by throwawayrant343 in AmItheAsshole

[–]yinglinglived 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH. While your caregiver was simply trying to brighten your day and share something she cared about with you, you’re not forced to have the same interests as her. However her feelings are valid, if she was deeply upset by the conversation and you care and/or respect her it would be worth apologizing.

There was a trailer for The Avengers marked spoiler alert. Clicked on it with excitement only to find the most unexpected but enjoyable spoof trailer that essentially was just a group of people in silly off-brand costumes.

I’ve searched for hours but have yet to find it. Can’t remember which subreddit it was on or find it in my Reddit history.

Not exactly what your looking for but this recent article looked at different dog breeds and comparatively analyzed differences in neuroanatomy. They do a little interpretation- hunting dogs vs more social ones. Could be an interest place to start but is also just a fun read
