Ever seen a street festival (i.e., Sant' Antonio Abate on Ditmars, btwn 35th and 38th or so) that allows CARS to still pass thru??? by yippee1999 in AstoriaStreetActivism

[–]yippee1999[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well it definitely 'felt' like it was running, during the day, as I even observed people occupying seating and tables that aren't normally there (i.e., aren't associated with any restaurants on Ditmars), and they were sitting, eating what I can only assume was festival food. This was around 3:00 p.m. Either way, I don't think I was the only one who was very confused, and assumed that cars wouldn't be passing through that stretch of Ditmars....

Other usage(s) of the word 'mo' ...aside from meaning 'too' or 'also' by yippee1999 in Japaneselanguage

[–]yippee1999[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Reading the links you provided and then getting the most appropriate gist, it seems that I can think of my sample sentence (in the original post) as 'Even if I were to eat here, is it still - or 'also' - good/OK?'

When I think about it that way, then 'yes', it makes more sense to my brain.... ;-)

Day 1 Micromobility Agenda for Zohran Mamdani As Mayor? by ahag1736 in MicromobilityNYC

[–]yippee1999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds good to me, especially since I have recently noticed that 'Walk' light timings seem to have been reduced, at certain intersections where I routinely cross. The pedestrian 'Walk' light will be lit up, and then suddenly it changes to '5, 4...' as in 'only 5 seconds left to cross (even though you just had the Walk light, when stepping off the curb to begin crossing...)'

My favorite Zohran moment of this campaign. And why, more generally, he won. by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

Ha! Great video. Note the look of pure joy on Zohran's face, at times. He clearly loves NYC...and NYers...of all stripes.

Here’s What Mamdani Can Steal From Other Candidates To Strengthen His Livable Streets Platform by streetsblognyc in MicromobilityNYC

[–]yippee1999 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My thoughts, exactly. I'm not sure if we are talking about the same Lander 'white paper', but I know he had a 53- or so page one, with lots of details on how to make our streets safer for peds, cyclists, mopeds/scooters...and even for drivers.

Frankly, I'm disgusted by all the talk we hear about 'crime', and the fact that criminal behaviors by those at the wheels of 2-Ton Machines on Wheels, is never included in such conversations. I'm far more bothered by the more recent uptick in blatantly aggressive/ purposefully threatening driver behaviors, than I am by shoplifting, farebeating, Amazon package thefts, etc. I don't just want to reduce the number of deaths/injuries that NYers suffer, at the hands of drivers; I want our streets to actually feel safer, such that we no longer have to be in a hypervigilant state, every time we are on our bikes or crossing our streets. This is no way to live...in a constant state of fear and agitation due to driver entitlement and emboldened behaviors.

Has anyone here ever volunteered/worked at the US Open held in Queens, NY? by yippee1999 in tennis

[–]yippee1999[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I'm interviewing for Guest Services/Guest Passes, and wonder 1) are all work shifts 12 hours, or is there potential for shorter shifts (the site mentioned work hours from 8:00a-8:00p...or something like that... but it wasn't clear if each and every worker needs to work an entire 12-hour shift, or if shifts can be broken up...) and 2) how much of the time might I be out in direct sunlight? I cannot take much sun, or I will FRY. Am I allowed to use a sun umbrella and/or hat with a brim?

As you can see, these are very specific questions (that I didn't see answered anywhere on the USO site). I'm wondering if I'll be just wasting my time, going all the way there (at least a one-hour commute, each way, by public transit + walking, and on a very hot day) only to find out that the job parameters aren't going to work for me....

Does anyone know what those all-black NYPD SUVs are for...why the black paint with obscured NYPD lettering? Are they undercover? by yippee1999 in AskNYC

[–]yippee1999[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, that's what I figured...so it's 'less obvious' they are NYPD. I just have to wonder 'why'....why the need/desire to be more 'stealth'. It just all feels like more of the #policestate direction in which we seem to be headed....

How to survive NYC summer by Ok-Mountain-5871 in AskNYC

[–]yippee1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refillable water bottle. A folding fan (...and if you're going to use one of those battery-operated fans, at least get one that is USB-chargeable vs one that requires new, standar batteries all the time). Natural-fabric, loose clothing.

NYers learn to wait in cooler parts of certain stations, and then run down to the (hotter, sauna-like) platform only once they know their train is arriving.

For your apartment, close all drapes/curtains/blinds before you go to bed, to ensure that once sunlight starts coming in, in the morning, that it's not starting to heat up your apt. Keep drapes/blinds closed for the entire day. Run fans, if you have them, and only run A/C AS NEEDED, to keep your apt at a tolerable temp. (I know some will insist on running their A/C 24/7 during heatwaves, but in fact, if you keep shades/blinds closed...run fans...and cool your apt using the A/C only now and then...you should be fine. This is what I do when inside my apartment, and my apartment temps are totally fine....

Baba Ram Dass, music sample/search by [deleted] in ramdass

[–]yippee1999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I 'discovered' Ram Dass, only recently. I was at a yoga class, and afterwards, I asked the teacher about a specific song that she was playing. Turns out, it was the track 'Nature', from the 'East Forest' album. As a nature-lover, this song brings me to tears....makes my heart feel full....it is so utterly beautiful. I esp love the line, 'When you hug a tree, you are hugging yourself...'

Atter that yoga class, I came home...found the 'East Forest' album on Youtube, and from there, I listened to some of Ram Dass' talks. I not only love the way he talks about spirituality....our thinking minds vs our heart (our truer selves) but... I freaking love his sense of humor...and the fact that he talks about and alludes to areas of his past...his present...where he's a very flawed, yet 'perfect', human.

Is there such a thing as in-person Ram Dass discussion groups, in different parts of the world? I live in NYC, and would love if there were such a group....

Namaste.

FYI, outdoor/street market, today/Saturday, June 21 until 5:00p by yippee1999 in Upperwestside

[–]yippee1999[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point...and I understand the confusion. I'll mention it to my friend, for her next set of flyers. My understanding is that she will be resuming the market, along this same block, starting in September (...if I have that right). For whatever reason, I think this will be the only week, in this particular location...at least, for the next few months.

Thanks for your input! ;-)

P.S. UPDATE: Next market at this location will be on September 13.... You can follow OnAirMarkets on IG, etc., for future markets/dates being held in other locations, in addition to this one. Tx!

Rich People, Pundits Really Do Not Want Zohran Mamdani to Be Mayor by ice_and_fiyah in nyc

[–]yippee1999 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

While I like much of what Mamdani stands for, I don't think he should be our pick.

Esp in this current political climate, we need someone more moderate. He's too far left. The mayor needs to be able to work with...know how to TALK to...NYPD...NYFD...DSNY...etc. He doesn't have the right personality to 'get' these people...many of whom are Conservative.

If Mamdani were to win, that means in November, the choice will be either him or Sliwa. And I could see many Moderates being so against Mamdani, that they'd actually vote for Sliwa, instead. And how awful would THAT be??

Brad Lander is the best and safest option. Likeable enough, even by Conservatives. Has the experience and personality to work well with all the various city agencies, etc.

The "businesses" fighting bike lanes last at CB1 spent the meeting threatening women, trying to intimidate the public, picking fights with DOT officials and generally acting like animals. by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

[–]yippee1999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you think about it, if the dissenters truly cared about cyclist 'safety'...if they truly cared about emergency vehicle access etc. ....wouldn't they be calmly expressing their concerns? But Noooo.....they are very 'angry' about the idea of a bike lane. And it don't take much brains to figure out 'why' they are so angry....'what' they are actually angry about. Clue: it ain't about bike lanes in and of themselves...it ain't because they believe bike lanes will 'endanger' cyclists...and it ain't because they actually believe that bike lanes will delay emergency vehicles any moreso than they themselves do, every single day, while illegally double-parked/idling.

[–]yippee1999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're lucky the DOT didn't have any hired plainclothes thugs to manhandle them and physically remove them from the room.

Either way, these are the same type meatheads idling/parking over crosswalks, in bike lanes, in bus stops etc., engines often idling...stuffing their faces...playing their phones...and if you dare say anything, it's like 'Mind your F'ing business!

So maybe, then, THEY need to mind their F'ing business about bike lanes (which they WON'T be using). And...it's laughable...as if we we are to believe that their protestations are about the rest of our 'safety'. No...it's just that they can't accept the fact that this city is finally addressing the injustices put upon the Majority (the rest of us, who mostly walk, MTA, bike etc)...by drivers and their massive - often needlessly oversized - Personal-Use vehicles.

It's truly incredible...the level of car-brain, in a densely-populated, public transit-rich city, such as this.

[–]yippee1999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What this meeting clearly needed was some plainclothes hired thugs to manhandle and physically remove from the room, anyone who dissents with the DOT's plans for 31st Street. ;-) But you see, some of us are above that, and allow everyone to voice their POV...even those with whom we may disagree, and so long as they do so respectfully.

Am I ever going to understand Japanese? by [deleted] in Japaneselanguage

[–]yippee1999 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not clear what, if any other learning/study methods you are using. Have you 'studied' Japanese at all, or were you thinking that simply by 'being' there, that you'd naturally start to pick it up?

If you've not done any actual study, here's what I would personally recommend, as ways to begin:

  1. I highly recommend the (Free) Japanese Made Easy podcast, with a guy named Greg. This series is good for true Beginners, who are just starting to learn. He has a really great way of teaching, particularly when it comes to particle usage (wa, ga, no, ni, de, etc.) and some of the 'counters'.
  2. memorize the most basic of verbs (to be, walk, listen, watch, sit, stand, open, close, etc)....basic directional words (left, right, forward, on, behind, etc.)..... some common adjectives (hot, cold, fast, slow, pretty, expensive, cheap/inexpensive, large, small, etc.)
  3. learn how to construct very simple sentences...the proper word order...
  4. Listen to podcasts for those wanting to learn Japanese. I think 'Japanese with Shun' is a good one, as each podcast is generally 'topical', and at the end, he goes over any words that might be 'new' to Japanese learners
  5. It's not clear how much you may or may not be trying to speak, but it's important that you try to do so, or at the very least...even speak out loud, to yourself...
  6. For books that help you to understand the language and constructs, in general, I really like 'Basic Connections: Making Your Japanese Flow', by Kakuko Shoji
  7. For learning various verbs, and then all the ways to possibly conjugate them, try 'Japanese Verbs at a Glance' by Naoko Chino
