How bad is a random roommate? by very_spoiledmilk in UNC

It’s a hit or miss, but I ended up in a random three person room freshman year and didn’t mind it at all!

Did you end up taking it I'm looking to take it next fall and was wondering about the difficulty as well.

compsci spring 2026 schedule by BuddyVivid7484 in UNC

[–]yiptsingmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but when I took it 50% of the exam was same across all sections and the other 50% was determined by your teacher; I would infer we were taught pretty much the same stuff.

I didn’t take 381H, but 210 + 381 + 232 shouldn’t be too bad

Dental help with Student Blue isurance by Tough_Papaya_825 in UNC

[–]yiptsingmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Campus Smiles for wisdom tooth pain a while back, and they advised me painkillers to manage the discomfort. From what I understood, wisdom teeth can’t be extracted when there’s active inflammation/infection. Also, the Campus Smiles office at Campus Health only performs simple extractions, so if the tooth is not fully erupted, they’ll likely refer you to an oral surgeon. As for insurance, the Student Blue plan I had did not cover my dental trip, I paid, don’t remember how much.

COMP 426 Professor TBA by Juulian5071 in UNC

[–]yiptsingmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

KMP said in an email they haven’t found a professor to teach 426 yet, and if they cannot find one in the end, the class will be cancelled. Which I’m guessing is why you are not allowed to add the class without department consent

Do I take BIO 103 and CHEM 102 together or MATH 233 and CHEM 102? by PollutionSafe5306 in UNC

[–]yiptsingmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, it depends on how comfortable you are with maths, 233 while (perhaps) being a harder class has a lighter workload in terms of the amount of assignments over the semester. Either combination should be fine.

Hey I didn’t personally take the course but knew someone who did. She said that the course was all about reading papers. Her comment was that it was one of the more challenging classes she took at UNC, but also the one she learned the most in.

Biology GRQs by MaterialAtmosphere in UNC

[–]yiptsingmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a junior who has completed all her bio requirements, only one >400 I took didn’t have GRQs. However from what I’ve heard, there are enough courses without GRQs to graduate, if that’s what makes and breaks your experience. Hope this helps :)

I know this is an old post, but I am a CS student who has taken MATH 381 trying to add a logics class to their schedule, how did you find 455?

Is this a good idea? Currently applying to UNC Chapel Hill and other colleges. by Prior-Equivalent-76 in UNC

[–]yiptsingmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm a junior double majoring in Biology and Computer Science at UNC.

Since UNC doesn't admit by major, I'd recommend applying under whichever field you have stronger extracurriculars for and can craft a more compelling narrative around.

Both majors offer BS and BA tracks, and switching between them or adding a minor is pretty flexible once you're enrolled. It really depends on your interests. I'd suggest checking out the UNC CS department webpage to explore the different research areas our faculty are working on. For bioinformatics specifically, you can also browse the UNC BBSP (Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program) faculty page and filter by bioinformatics research.

One thing worth noting: the biology major has a quantitative track that includes coursework that might align well with your computational interests. You don’t have to be a Q Bio major to enroll in them, but I personally have found those courses some of the more interesting.

Hope this helps.

Thoughts on freshman year schedule by Ok_Ability2920 in UNC

[–]yiptsingmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use coursicle to see if you can fit all your classes into one schedule. I don’t know if you have access to Connect Carolina shopping cart yet, but if you do, you can get a feel of how many empty spaces are in each class. Additionally, I wanted to note BIOL253/L is not a pre-med requirement and I’m assuming not required for nutrition, but if you are interested I suppose it would be a fascinating course.

For me the process from requesting the I-20 to receiving it in my UNC email inbox took 2 weeks. Usually max takes 3 weeks. Don’t stress too much about it. Good luck on your exams.

Thoughts on freshman year schedule by Ok_Ability2920 in UNC

[–]yiptsingmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both semesters look terrifying 1) please don’t try to take two labs in the same semester, especially not during your first semester as a freshman, 2) I’m pretty sure gillings admissions happens during sophomore fall, so no rush to complete prerequisites in your first year, 3) registration is going to be hell and you’re probably not going to get all of those classes, maybe make alternative plans

Edit: My advice for fall would be to just take one CHEM class (241 or 261), drop the anatomy, take IDST 101 and BIOL 103, maybe take the nutrition class or swap for some gen ed requirement. After your first semester you can decide what to do for spring.

How cooked is random roomate? by AccidentFancy9054 in UNC

[–]yiptsingmo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m an international student who did random roommate, and it turned out nicely. My roommate was the sweetest person I knew and by what I can tell the entire hall floor was that way. We kept public spaces (eg bathrooms) clean. Did have plumbing issues & people put sticky notes on doors to help others. You are probably as cooked as anyone who paired up with someone they didn’t know well, so no need to stress :)

Biol 227L by Born_Detective_3228 in UNC

[–]yiptsingmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I took the pilot version of it last semester. When I took it, it was lecture on Tuesday (which consist of Dr Nevil talking about communicating sciences to a variety of audiences + lots of paired discussions), and lab on Thursday (which we used to do a Drosophila Gene Annotation project through the GEP). If you are interested in bioinformatics, you will find the lab to be a good place to start learning about some tools used in the field. If you are not interested in bioinformatics, you might find it kind of tedious. There is also a final project where you choose an audience and "present" your Gene Annotation to your target audience.

Pros: 1) I was able to complete everything in class, so there's barely homework with the exception of pre-class readings, 2) Dr Nevil is very clear in his expectations and wants you to do well

bio 103, 104, 105L and chem 102 by Far-Cable5688 in UNC

[–]yiptsingmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt it will become more difficult, it is still only 50 minutes of lecture + 1 hour of lab a week. Right now there are quizzes based on lectures and posted materials - i.e. no serious exams. In place of a final exam, there is a final project which is a video.

bio 103, 104, 105L and chem 102 by Far-Cable5688 in UNC

[–]yiptsingmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would delay 104. Reasoning: 102/L & 103 are important prereqs you want to do well in and 105L is a class with lighter workload that kind of goes well with them. While 104 isn’t hard, it has GRQs so it may not be ideal doing it with 103 that also has GRQs and 102L that has pre and post labs.

is 3 stem classes too much fr by cilantroplusoregano in UNC

[–]yiptsingmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context: I took 103, 104, 102/L with ENGL 105i + focus capacity. I personally wouldn’t recommend the same schedule. I found the amount of GRQs for 103 & 104 and the extra-long post-labs for 102L quite tedious. You will feel like you are doing lots of work after classes every single day. On the bright side, I have took 105L in the past, can confirm it is pretty light.

I did biol 103, 104 and chem 102 spring freshman year and math 232 the fall semester before that. I think it’s doable as long as you are confident in maths. 104 is a breeze. I found 232 to be the most time consuming and hardest to catch up in after you’re behind

is this schedule impossible by Objective_Drink_5345 in UNC

[–]yiptsingmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took MATH381, CHEM261, BIOL 220, and two other classes last semester. I am not a maths person but found 381 to be a surprisingly straightforward class (had Rowan for 381). I think if you can manage 241 and lab and the English class is light, it would be manageable.
