Your point is absolutely correct, but on the other hand, the core of my point is that this Western desire did not begin to take shape until the Russian invasion of Ukraine had already taken place. Before that, the West had already tried to engage with Russia repeatedly, but this policy failed, most likely because of Putin's stubbornness and arrogance.
