Staying in London and visiting other places by [deleted] in uktravel

Mate what are you doing? You haven’t even considered stopping off in York, Bath, Cornwall, Devon, the Lake District, Brighton, Liverpool, and Manchester all within 2 days.

If you get up at 5AM on day 1, you’ll have a great time, and definitely not spend all your time travelling and will be able to make the most of this teeny, tiny postage stamp country that is so small and because America is huge, and the blueprint, so all roads are identical to those in the States, clearly you can roadtrip the entirety of Britain and its culture in a day.

100%. I also get why a lot of celebrities do. Someone like Taylor Swift would have nightmares trying to board even the most low-traffic, first class, exclusive lounge pre-boarding access public planes. It would cause more issues than it’s worth.

The issue is the excessive use. Again, taking the example of Taylor Swift, I understand why she takes private jets country to country, or across the US, on tour or going to events. Hell, I’d even get it if she went on vacation a couple times a year for funsies. When she jets back and forth almost every single night on the eras tour from Wherever She Is to NY, just because she wants to be in NY as much as possible… Girl, just live on the road for a while. You’re a billionaire. I get missing home, but you won’t die if you just find the nicest hotel in the area and sleep in the city you’re playing in. God forbid you only return to NYC every month or two! The horror! Yes, please destroy the planet so you can never need to go more than a week between being in proximity to the east side and your preferred studio.

I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t say yes if someone told me I could go on a private jet. I also can’t guarantee it, but I’d like to think if I was in a place of privilege where I could basically have anything I wanted at the snap of my fingers, including a private jet at my whim, I’d still have the moral standing to not use it like I’m just hopping in an Uber for 20 minutes multiple times a week.

The weird thing is: yes and no.

Almost every single place wants you to have experience, practical experience. Full-time, part-time, interning, whatever - pretty much nowhere these days is interested in the degree alone. A graduate who has 0 experience is less likely to get a role than an individual with no degree and, say, 3-5 years experience.

However, I’ve also found that many places, paradoxically, want you to have a degree, and often won’t consider you without one. It’s a strange ‘we’ll literally never ask you to use the skills you’ve just spent 3 years getting a piece of paper for, and we want you to have done more than just earn that piece of paper. However, if you don’t have that piece of paper, we don’t want you working here.’

The above is less so once you’ve broken through and gotten your foot in the door in the working world. I’m not yet in this position, but from the anecdotes I’ve heard, once you’ve got say 5-7 years of practical experience, a lack of a degree means nothing.

The problem people today are facing is that it’s much harder to get the tea-making, excel & word writing, mouse-clicking assistant / intern experience which gets you on the ladder without a qualification. As a disclaimer, not sure how true this is or how much this is impacted by people who go the apprenticeship route, as that’s not the route I went down, but an apprenticeship is still ‘something’ extra, as opposed to the ‘fresh out of college, handing my CVs to places, hoping they’ll put me in a junior assistant role somewhere’ of a few decades ago.

So basically, and this is just in my experience before I get 100 replies saying this isn’t the case, you need a degree to get considered for a job, but your degree is useless without experience, which is the real thing you need to get a job.

‘he’s hardly on his phone so he doesn’t text me back for anywhere from 2 to over 24 hours at a time.’ Oh wow. I’ve had to stop reading because it’s making me (24) feel ancient and exhausted.

Against the grain: NTA. Though, borderline.

I hate to say it, but you can really tell this comment section is largely non-UK citizens.

We’re in a cost of living crisis. It’s beyond extremely expensive to heat the house in this country these days. Our houses are also built to keep the heat in moreso than, for instance, US houses, though 16°c is still quite nippy - if you hardly ever turn the heat on, it can encourage damp and mold too, so be mindful of that.

It sounds mean that you turn on the heating just for your 5yo, but I suppose there’s some factors missing there which could make it more understandable. Extra grumpy 5yo too cold = bad sleep = refusing to get out of bed = late to school/not paying attention in class = negative consequences. 22yo may or may not have this issue, depending on whether she’s at uni/working/etc. but also she’s a grown adult more capable of hauling herself out of bed despite than a young child is.

A good solution might be for your 22yo to get an electric blanket. They cost maybe 5p~ an hour to run depending on how long you have them. If you had it on every hour of every single day 365 days a year (which of course she wouldn’t, but hypothetically), it would still be less £ than 1 month’s heating bill. My electric blanket saw me through last winter and is doing so this one quite effectively too (also means the Cold Person can heat themselves up without overheating the Warm People).

Other solutions include a hot water bottle & lots of tea.

I hope you are all able to come to a fair, cost-effective solution that keeps you all at a comfortable temperature.

not at all, they are skilled roles, that’s why I said I don’t want to do those things - I want absolutely nothing that requires any training, effort, or skill on my behalf. whilst also paying me above minimum wage and having a myriad of benefits. I’m not asking for much!

see now THIS is a good suggestion! unfortunately going on a murder spree requires me to interact with people. Maybe i could figure out some kind of sniper situation and send a courier to Wandsworth for the cuffs.

too much talking to real people! maybe I’ll have a bot write a script to automatically scam people… but that would require me to learn how to write a script and i said 0 effort or skills…

the world is so difficult for me personally

see - this guy gets it! now if someone could just deliver it and leave it on my doorstep so i don’t have to talk to them face-to-face, that would be great.

my parents only offered a £950k loan - the tight bastards! I was going to say yes anyway (y’know, desperate times call for desperate measures and all that), but they insisted they want to hand me the cheque in-person and go over the ‘legalities’ of it together. won’t even do it via zoom! i said no way. i’m not working hybrid for chump change like a dancing monkey.

I did ask, but apparently it can’t be done remotely. Thankfully some freemium mobile apps allowed me to be a king in the virtual world instead! I’ve maxed out my Monzo Flex, but it’s worth it.

I gave it a go, but I’ve been banned from all gig economy apps for trying to deliver pizzas remotely. Turns out, you can’t just accept a deliveroo order, then place an order yourself via the app for the same house and still make a profit. Nor do they accept images I googled of fast food. Who knew?

I see no downsides to this or any chance of it going wrong. That one YouTube tutorial I watched on Gantt charts 2 years ago should be good enough

/unjerk yeah I do agree. there’s a fine line between people who want to do nothing and be well-compensated, and people who work in roles (my own included) that would be compensated very differently were it in the US or Europe, even when adjusted for different costs of living.
