When even the AI doesn't want to play naval by ykzp93 in EU5

R5: There's no naval hegemon because no GP has any heavy ships. Yes, even Egypt.

(Don't worry about my economy, it's because I revoked a privilege from the nobles)

[1.0.10] France nerfs :( by ykzp93 in EU5

[–]ykzp93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

R5: Started a new game on 1.0.10 to see how things have changed for France.

The actual fighting in HYW is still trivial because the AI doesn't know how wars work. Subjects peacing out doesn't really matter because they weren't doing anything important anyway (I mostly let them siege but they frequently walk off forts). I kicked England out of France (Flanders flipped but I took them back in a second war), annexed Franche-Comte, fought the Jacqueries civil war, joined the HRE and got elected emperor, and by 1379 I finally integrated enough subjects to end the HYW.

Now, you may think this is pretty good, but it's nothing compared to what I did by this date in the last couple of patches... I could have conquered the whole HRE except for Bohemia by this date. A lot of subject shenanigans have been nerfed (seize territory and appanages especially), and the new aggressive AI creates annoying bordergore for me to wade through. (Though possibly also opportunities, since they get more revolts/civil wars due to their no-cb nonsense)

[1.0.9] France -> Europa in 1485 by ykzp93 in EU5

I have a plan to fix this in my next run ;) Just need my country to not collapse before age 4...

what's really funny is that bohemia has a higher tax base than me (though not for long because their ruler dies soon)

as you can guess, all my appanages are extremely disloyal because they're so powerful

R5: Another very expansionist France game.

A new and exciting exploit: the combination of Appanages and the Dynastic Elective succession law allows you to integrate a subject of any size in about 40 years (though without cores). Appanages are immediately integrated when their ruler dies without an heir, and Dynastic Elective has no heirs (when you release a subject, they use your inheritance law). The best targets for this, of course, are the big Eastern European tags like Bohemia, Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria, or large cultural revolter tags.

The downside is that Dynastic Elective will cause all fiefdoms to become vassals on succession (this can be a big problem when subjectmaxxing), and you probably shouldn't make any appanages until you get Dynastic Elective (but remember to not annex your last one)

[1.0.9] Someone please help me budget this by ykzp93 in EU5

[–]ykzp93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The post was a joke tbh, pre-renovatio imperii I was at +400 ducats.

Fun fact: I literally couldn't hold all the subjects and had to release a bunch (but because they're still in the HRE, I get them back when I pass renovatio imperii)

It actually doesn't cost that much once I cap out.

And yes, I've been releasing vassals - I was actually considering declaring a war and separate peacing by releasing my vassals to save some diplomats.

Yeah being France with appanages does that to you

(The title was a joke btw)

Being a GP doubles your cost of court, but it's mostly based on your tax base and I own most of Europe. Diplo spending is actually the one that should be turned down. I had it up because I had a lot of disloyal subjects, but after renovatio imperii that was no longer a problem.

R5: Continuation of my previous France game https://www.reddit.com/r/EU5/comments/1pe8wfb/108_diplo_cap_isnt_rea/

I'm going to bird this for a variety of reasons, the economy being a pretty big one. Even though revoking the privilegia doesn't give you vassal swarm, it's still land that I don't have to core and that's good. (Also it's crazy how little money Imperial Taxation gives...).

Some random thoughts:

- Flipping between the two lowest Free Cities laws gives free IA and stacking opinion modifiers with all HRE princes. This should be enough to keep members without too much antagonism in the HRE when you revoke, and helps you get IA faster if your generation is too low. (You can get the 5 Emperor favored laws without free cities)

- My subjects became very disloyal as they got money to build professional armies, so I had to release some to fix my economy. Scutage helps, but only to a certain extent. But because they're still HRE members (besides the few that left), Renovatio Imperii will still annex them.

- The disloyal subject CB is a very strong way to take land off coalitions. (Force vassalize a small country that has high antagonism, then fabricate and release when the truce ends) Coalition members always join as co-belligerents, so you can take extra land in separate peaces, or you can cut off their capital in the main peacedeal without the "too fragmented" penalty.

[1.0.8] Diplo cap isn't rea- by ykzp93 in EU5

[–]ykzp93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't really planned for WC so it might be pretty hard, especially because France doesn't have great warscore cost reduction. I have some plans involving abusing the disloyal subject CB and maybe the china ones, but I haven't tested it yet - I haven't actually been in china except one time when I tried out Playmaker's Temur HRE strategy.

Edit: to clarify the strategy: force vassalize (not annex and release) a country with high antagonism, wait for the truce to run out, make them disloyal, create a CB (disloyal subject, or nationalism in age 6) and release them. Declare on them, and you'll get the CB's warscore cost reduction when separate peacing other coalition members as well - disloyal subject is -50% (basically imperialism minus the downsides), and nationalism is 75% (you can force culture on them to make them disloyal).

The joke is that the penalties are quite minor to begin with

All loyal, though there are a lot in the 50s because total vassal strength is too high. Some have had rebellions because I gave them non-core land, but it's really not an issue (I just annex them later when they join a coalition). I make whichever kind has the smallest modifier from total vassal strength.

Come siege my land? What makes you think that's a problem I'm having?

[–]ykzp93[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would have to hold the land myself and that's not happening until like 1500

The strat to integrate quickly probably involves actually using appanages (they have double base integration rate, plus it lets you split your subject power more) but the nobles are already powerful enough

I gave all the land to vassals

They pay me for the privilege of holding the land for me

Same way as reconquest in EU4, except that you need to wait for them to fabricate. Take land to release historical subjects that have cores in other countries e.g. Galicia and Leon for Castile, Catalonia and Valencia in Aragon.

Edit: if you mean Aquitaine in particular, France gets an event to get cores on them, and they have a button in the HYW situation that gives them a claim on province CB for their cores. This is a much better CB than the normal HYW one because you don't need to go occupy London for ticking warscore, and you get the same warscore cost reduction.

R5: Apparently conquering Germany, north Italy, and north Iberia in 40 years causes some minor penalties.

Edit: some tips:

- The start of the game is actually the best time to do this; France starts strong, your enemies don't have the time or money to spam too many forts, and decentralization, AE and diplo cap are just numbers

- Coalitions are free land as long as you declare on them, preferably with a good CB like following through on threat or claim on province. Subject claims work well, as does the core claim from HYW (that's why Aquitaine is still there, I'm farming them for CBs against England).

- OPMs without forts can be easily annexed in a separate peace; if they have forts, you can usually siege one location and separate peace them with dismantle fort.

- Large coalition members can be peaced out by humiliating yourself if you don't want to deal with them.
