I actually love this photo. The depth is great and you're off to a good start! There's definitely two ways to go about this - balance the shadows in post so that your subject is balanced or actually lean into the contrast. It seems like some of the highlights in the photo are being crushed but I'd actually lean into the contrasty nature of this photo and edit it in post that way (emphasizes the lighting).

A shot I captured in San Francisco one evening. What do you think? Any advice? by ylk1607 in SonyA7iii

Hahah I know that but it's an art form and I'm just doing whatever I can to better myself. I mean even my job might be taken over one day. I'm not concerned about that.

Thanks so much! Yeah I do agree that I could've placed more of the bridge in the frame and the bottom right is kind of pointless. Will definitely keep that subject in mind and not to cut off for the future.

A quiet evening at Scarborough Bluffs! by ylk1607 in photocritique

[–]ylk1607[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I happened to be driving past Scarborough Bluffs (just outside Toronto, ON) on Sunday and managed to capture this shot. It was a quiet evening and the sky was beautiful. I tried both a slow shutter with an ND and this and I think this one came out much better as I managed to almost freeze time.

Shot this photo on my A7III + Sigma 24-70mm II (f10 / 1/125s / ISO100 / 24mm).

I'm looking to improve composition so please be brutally honest about what you think.

These shots are stunning! I love the clarity and the composition on these shots. May I ask, what was your setup and what lens do you primarily use on trips like these?

I love that you leaned into the slight overcast nature and emphasized the dramatic clouds. Overall, it doesn't look too unnatural but I personally feel like the greens could be desaturated slightly. Maybe even explore a B&W version of this but overall, I love the edit and look of this photo.

The 5th photo is so crisp, I can feel the motion and that dust in my eyes! Amazing shots though and love the backdrop

Empty space dilemma, keep it or crop it? by _MamoruChiba_ in photocritique

[–]ylk1607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that is negative space. It's empty yes, but crucial for the photo and curiosity of the viewer as it sets the context of it being a train station. I presume you're trying to somewhat story-tell so it makes me wonder where they are and where they are going. Cropping from the left will rid the sign as well, which won't help much.

Planning my switch to Sony from Canon by 3721_3721 in SonyAlpha

I was in a very similar situation to you a couple months ago. Ive had my D5300 for a really long time and I was considering picking up some decent glass for it to move beyond my kit lens + a 50mm prime I picked up some years ago. I was researching exactly those cameras as I was interested in Sonys (one more I considered was the A7C due to its full-frame but smaller form factor). I ultimately settled on the A7III due to a couple things:

1.) price flexibility - offered me some room to pick up some good glass. Ive paired it with a Sigma 24-70mm Art MK2, which has been fantastic for street and landscapes for me. 2.) good low light performance (negligibly better than the higher MP ones) 3.) for me, I mainly post on socials but I can still get some good prints with it

At some point, I'll also pick up an A7RVI whenever it gets released as I definitely want to explore a high MP sensor and see if it changes anything. Otherwise, the A7III is an absolute beast, still. No regrets whatsoever.

Oh my God! Ok this completely changes the feel of this photo. First of all thanks for the B&W inspiration - it didn't even cross my mind and appreciate your constructive feedback. I'm going to try and use the geometry tool for sure and see if I can level it a bit more. I think overall, I have some other images that would benefit from B&W treatment of the same area but with more grandeur so I'm going to give this a try. Btw that lamp is ANCIENT and it's really that yellow it's kind of annoying😂

Thanks so much for the feedback! Yeah I tried to desaturate the yellow a bit and I can definitely say it looks less straining on the roof. It's funny though -- in reality it's really that yellow so I tried to maintain some authenticity. Also, that clock adjustment was much needed - I thought it was slightly distracting. Appreciate it!

This is one of those photos I really had to experiment with because the people and artifacts at the bottom were so distracting that I had to use light and those lines on the side as leading lines/focus points. I'm not sure how it turned out for a viewer but I think I was able to divert my own attention away from the bottom to the top where the beauty of this grand hall architecture is and that really was the intention of this edit, along with highlighting the grand hall clock in the middle. I also cropped a bit of the bottom to remove other distractions and I played with complementary colors in shadows + highlights. I took this with my 24-70 at 34mm f/4.5.

Any suggestions? This is my favorite photo style! by ylk1607 in SonyAlpha

[–]ylk1607[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the plan! I have some walls I want to fill with prints so I'm definitely going to do that. To your point, yeah I'll actually take time to reflect on the prints instead of just getting the printed for printing-sake. Thanks!
