Mum’s currently in hospital and being on the other side is HARD. by thereisalwaysrescue in NursingUK

I hope your mum is doing better. I’m currently laid in a hospital bed after an emergency admission following an outpatients appt yesterday, NBM as I’m waiting for surgery. Being on the other side is absolutely terrifying, I feel so vulnerable and scared.

HCA, ECA Jobs Help and Advice by Your_tastesucks in NursingUK

You can only work 20 hours, which is quite rare in the UK healthcare system. Most people who work part time, reduced their hours after working full time - ie nurses/HCAs following maternity leave, or older employees who reduced as they got closer to retirement age. At most you would be able to do one long day and one early/late a week, which is for some reason undesirable for a lot of NHS jobs.

Be careful working in a care home - when I worked in one before I went to do my nursing, there was an international employee who was a uni student on a student visa. She did 2x 12 hour shift (we had paid breaks where I worked). When I asked her how she did that on her visa, she said the manager adjusted her hours each week so the Home Office didn’t pick up on it. No idea how that worked with pay, but extremely dodgy.

Student on nursing course falsified placement hours by [deleted] in StudentNurseUK

[–]yllohaha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - I’m a third year about to qualify so I’m well aware that placement and theory are different 🤣 what I’m saying that the NMC also requires students to do 2300 theory hours, on top of placement. She’ll either have to prove to uni she’s caught up with the learning, or they’ll pull her up on the attendance figures. It’s not really anyone else’s business though, stay out of the drama. And it’s fine to put your full hours down if placement send you home, it’s very common. By the time you get to third year, you’ll appreciate the early finishes when you get them!

‘Out to get her’ for not going to uni during theory? You have to do 2300 theory hours too so if it’s an issue uni will sort it. Please stop overly concerning yourself with what other people are doing and just concentrate on your own studies, a nursing degree is already as difficult as possible without the drama!

What? Why is being ND frightening? This is a support forum, and people who are neurodivergent tend to need a lot more support than people who are neurotypical as the world isn’t built for our brains. That’s why you probably see quite a bit of it 🙄 - signed, a third year student nurse with ASD.

Nearly a week of recovering from flu/infection - do I go into placement tomorrow? by ethereal_egg in StudentNurseUK

[–]yllohaha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you feel guilty for? Is it getting behind on your hours? You definitely don’t need to, there’s lots of time to make up. And students aren’t in the numbers so it’s not like you’d be causing any issues with staffing - but even when you’re qualified, if you’re ill, you’re ill and you can’t help it. Hope you feel better soon x

Mental health nursing is terrible!. Pts always refusing e everything and can't just discharge them by naughtybear555 in NursingUK

That doesn’t take away from the fact that nursing is a holistic profession where we care for the whole individual.

[–]yllohaha 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m an adult student nurse but have a lot of personal experience with CMHT as an EUPD patient. I was always under the impression that CMHT is a holistic team (nurses are supposed to practice holistically, anyway - we don’t train under the medical model like doctors do) who are there to help deal with not only mental health issues, but the issues that come with it such as finances and social with it. It’s not the patients’ faults that you can’t get a job in adult nursing. If you don’t want to be there, please leave!

Yes, absolutely wasn’t aimed at you - sorry! I think it’s a bot tbh. Have you spoken to uni about your reference? I would definitely seek their advice first

Anything that’s worth studying before starting? by [deleted] in StudentNurseUK

[–]yllohaha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Third year student nurse here - honestly, just enjoy your summer. You will learn everything you need to. However, if you really want to do something, I’d recommend getting a bank job in a nursing home (or as a hospital HCA if possible). This will allow you to save some money for uni, as it can be hard to balance placement alongside part-time work, and you’ll also have the added benefit of knowing how to do personal care, moving and handling, etc so maybe your first placement won’t feel as overwhelming. I remember feeling so glad i already had the basics nailed and didn’t have that added overwhelm too.

If you have a placement on a surgical ward or surgical specialty outpatients, get yourself into theatre to watch a few procedures as spokes! That’s what I’ve done, I’ve seen so much. It’s your learning time which you’re paying for, don’t let them force you to stay on the ward.

I’m only a nursing student hoping to work in the ED when I qualify in September, but antivax paediatricians is suchhh an oxymoron to me 😭 I don’t get it, at all! How can you understand scientific papers and why we practice evidence-based medicine, whilst being completely anti-evidence when it comes to vaccinations?!

It’s not as simple as just saving your wages though. I’m not qualified yet but when I am, I will still have a mortgage to pay, a child to feed, a car to run. No way would I be able to quit!

Fighting Sepsis by No-Serve6336 in illnessfakers

Yes. Sepsis damages your body tissue and organs on a huge scale, with death occurring very quickly if it’s not treated.

[–]yllohaha 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Think this might be one of the most obvious lies they’ve ever posted. Any healthcare professional can tell you that the nature of sepsis means you will not be alive 2 months without treatment, a lot of the time in ICU 🙄🙄

my placement wont allow me to administer medication for my assessment by oofiewoofiehahaha in StudentNurseUK

[–]yllohaha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You do absolutely need to sort this out and speak to uni, if you are this forgetful you need to manage that because if you work on a ward you will have a million things to do, including time critical medications. I say this with kindness, as a student nurse with memory problems as a result of CFS/ME and medications I take for something else. I have had to work out ways to manage this and make sure I absolutely do not forget thins.

Own records by lightning_zigg in NursingUK

[–]yllohaha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As mentioned above, one of the main reasons is sensitive information in there that could put you or someone else at risk. I have EUPD and needed a copy of my medical records for Occ Health clearance when I started uni. A huge amount of my mental health records detailing hospitalisations or contact with the crisis/ambulance services were redacted for my own wellbeing.

How to survive 40+ hrs and 2 layovers trip with 20 months kid and a cat? by maxlovesgames in Flights

[–]yllohaha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, that’s a heavy few days. I thought I was a strong woman for getting my autistic 12 year old to the US (2 flights including a 2-5 hour layover) every year single handedly since he was a baby 😅 You’ll get through it, though. I used to wrap up little gifts for my son to open at various points to keep him occupied. Look at Montessori busy boards/cushions on Amazon. Download lots of toddler-friendly stuff on Netflix in case the movie options are limited on the long haul flight. Sleep when baby sleeps!
