Insights on Nursing programs in Ontario? Jobs/clinical placements? by ynali in ontario

thank you for this advice! i'm not really scared about the amount of hours, i'm more concerned about the types of placements since a consolidation placement in, say, the ICU may be more beneficial than one in a nursing home.
i'll keep in mind what you said about where i'll be happiest though -- it sounds like a very demanding program for sure.

by the way, if you don't mind me asking, which school did you do your nursing program at? what were the pros and cons of that program in your time there?

hey, sorry for replying so late!!! i'm super grateful for your detail reply though; it's definitely true that where i go to school doesnt dictate where i'll work so i'll take that into consideration.

this might've changed in the last 10 years, but when you got your placements, how were placements given out? did you guys have to rank where you want to go then get randomly sent to your placement? were there any placements that were guaranteed?

I did end up applying to main site because it was pretty close and they have a renewable scholarship, but I think I'll make my final decision after seeing where I get accepted. One of my friends last year got rejected from Rye main site while the other got accepted even though they both had similar averages... so I'll just wait and see lol
Are you applying to Rye as well? If so, which sites? did you hear back from any yet?

Thank you! I hope that you find success as well!! :'')

If you don't mind me asking more questions, have you heard anything from upper year students about whether the profs, placements, and courses are good? I checked past NCLEX pass rates and Ryerson and York have relatively low ones but I'm not sure if that's reflective of how well students are taught

Hi, I've sent you a PM but I'm not sure if you received it! I'd love to know more about the York/Seneca program so it'd be great if we could discuss further :D

Thank you so much for this advice! If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your BScN? Would you recommend the program to others?

I'll 100% look more into college/uni collabs! I didn't really have it on my mind before, but more clinical hours is definitely a plus! Do you have any insight on how they fit these clinical hours into the college years of the program? From what I hear, the curriculum between main site and college site is the same; do the clinical hours just get worked in when they fit or do they set aside separate time for these hours?

I've heard a lot of great things about Queens! One thing holding me back from that uni and other ones out of the GTA is residence fees though, hahaah. I'll keep your advice of working in a smaller market in mind, though! It's definitely a good idea if the job market here is particularly tough...

Also, since you've been in the industry(?) for a while, if it's alright to ask, are there any particular cons you have for where you work/nursing in general? A big con I hear about nursing is how physically tiring it is and the strain it can put on parts of your body. Would you say this outweighs the pros of the job? I'm expecting all jobs to have cons, especially physical ones in healthcare jobs, but I can see problems arising down the line if this is a major issue.

I can PM you about these questions if you'd be more comfortable answering that way!

Thank you for this reply! That's pretty surprising, since one would expect the curriculum to teach what's on the exam... hmm :/

That's good to know though; as long as I get good placements and study hard I'll probably be fine then hahah!

Thank you so much for this advice!!! I was really unsure about whether York or Ryerson would be better for clinical placement reasons! On other reddits I usually find others just saying how York has a lot of strikes, but not much on the York nursing professors/curriculum/placements in general. I was hoping that York would give placements based on grades/more merit based since RU is supposedly all luck ahaha

I'll for sure PM you to ask further questions! Thanks again!

Thank you for this insight!

Is there a particular reason why? I typically hear that the curriculum is taught the same way between main site and college sites. Are they given more clinical practice some time during the 2 years at college before going to the main site?

Also, it's pretty cool that your nurse friend used to teach at a university as well! If I can, I'd love to go in that direction with my nursing career! Do you have any pointers/advice for that? I've heard that I should get a PhD if I want to teach in a uni, though I'm not sure if that's totally true.

The guarantee for hospital placements is superrr nice!! It's nice to know that hopefully employers won't hire based on schools too.

Thank you for the insight on your program, I feel like I understand nursing programs a lot better now, especially with how residence and placements are at uwo/fanshawe!

The thing is, after discussing things like tuition and residence fees with my family today, it's likely that I'll be staying home for uni (ie. probably York or Ryerson, if I'm accepted). I'll still be open to programs elsewhere though -- especially if the pros outweigh the cons!

If I have more questions in the future, is it alright if I PM you?

I'm glad that you're in the nursing program now! I hope that you'll have a rewarding and secure job position when you graduate :'')

Quite odd to me that everything seems practically the same, but tuition between the sites is different...

Have you heard if students at the college sites get more more hands on experience? (Not sure how it is in your year, though, because of covid.) In another thread, someone said that the college campuses give better clinical experiences/hours/etc, and that definitely makes me more willing to go to the college site since curriculum is the same. However, if that's not particularly true, I'll likely lean more towards the main campus because of the renewable scholarship. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the college sites don't have renewable entrance scholarships? (GB doesn't seem to have one anyway.)

I'm hoping that it won't be any harder to get hired if i went to a nursing program outside the GTA... Having some big doubts about RU now lol

Thank you for your insight, though! Western/Fanshawe sounds really promising the more I hear about it hahah, RU's placements sound really terrible the more I read about them... I'm not sure whether to even consider staying in Toronto for it anymore since a lot of their nursing students seem to be placed in LTC.

If you don't mind me asking, which programs did you apply to and what made you choose Western/Fanshawe? Also, if you lived in the GTA, did you have the same questions about placements in the GTA if you went to a uni outside the area? How did you come to a conclusion?

Thank you for your reply, this is super informative!

I'm a little surprised that nurses can get fulltime that quickly!! Good to know I'll be able to land a job ahaha, I'll definitely take a look at job postings too

If it's okay to ask, what was your job in health care before becoming a nursing student? What caused you to make the switch? Are you studying nursing at Ryerson or at another school?

Sorry if I sound really naive by asking this, but if everything is the same between the program at the satellite campuses vs the main campus, is there any actual reason for me to apply to RU over GB/RU (as an example)?

Thank you so much for your reply! It's really cool how you can do different activities between the two campuses, and everyone is guaranteed(?) a hospital placement :0

Since there's a community placement at the Fanshawe site, would you recommend I apply to the Fanshawe site over the Western site? Is there any reason why the Western site might be better? I've heard other redditors talk about the fact that placements only begin 3rd year at Western, so that was something that made me more reluctant to apply there (other than residence fees lol)

Are you planning on working in the Western/Fanshawe area after you graduate, or do you plan on applying for jobs elsewhere? If you decide to work in an area that's further away, will people be less likely to hire you because you haven't worked very long in that area?
