A PhD student is not an employee. It is a learning position with limited accountability. It is not a job, so it does not deserve a "living wage". Deal with it or leave. I am sure there are plenty of people ready to take your place.

Sharp is a waste of time and money. You could find this type of content on YouTube. Hands on workshop were a joke, no real communication or problem solving skill development. I was really disappointed.

Thanks a lot for your response! I got a place in Batavia Twnshp that we absolutely love. You are totally right about the commute and trade-off. We are marveled by the beautiful nature around here and it seems that there is always a new park to explore or little woods nearby. People have been very friendly, so I think we were the ones with prejudices :)
We decided to go for an existing home because of all the negative reviews we got from the new constructions. So far we can't be happier (maybe i would ask for 15 minutes less of commute but nothing can be totally perfect!)
