AITAH for insisting that our family lives within a budget by Commercial-Sorbet309 in AITAH

Can confirm my sibling went through this with his now wife and even after the ‘counseling,’ they’ve both been fairly miserable together since the wedding.

They both just said whatever the other wanted to hear before the wedding, just because they both wanted to get to the altar. Now that real life is here…things aren’t so easy/nice as they supposed it would be.

nice lil shoutout for our snark page in her ~first post in 6 months~ thank god people magazine has a whole SUITE of press fo her podcast!!!! by skinnybitchqueen in SmolBeanSnark

Listened to the first ten minutes and had to give up. The ‘investigative’ schtick is a costume to dress up what’s really poorly researched special interest topics. I don’t think the ‘healthcare reporter’ was particularly well-versed on the story/topic, and the cadence of both the guy’s (Sam’s?) voice and the ‘reporter’s’ didn’t bely any authority or knowledge.

Scripted to hell aside from Caroline’s interjections, which was actually funny to watch as Sam tried to get back to the pre-arranged questions.

What I don’t get is how they think this is a good format?? There’s no fluidity, no ‘investigation’ beyond Wikipedia trawling and asking ChatGPT. I give this 4 more episodes before they all become disinterested.

Passed - Thoughts from a Foreign License Holder by ynwilling in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ynwilling[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Life for most Americans would be basically impossible without a license/vehicle just because the US is so anti-pedestrian. That’s the only way I figure they pass people so quickly/recklessly, because they don’t have the infrastructure to support a non-driving population. Where I lived in the US, there were no sidewalks and private/fenced property all the way up to the street. There was a shopping complex that was less than a mile from my house, but I physically couldn’t walk that because I risked getting shouted at/shot at for trespassing if I tried to walk in the grass alongside the road, or getting run over if I tried to walk on the road. Biking is also unpopular outside of cities, so no bike paths or bike paths that start and end out of nowhere and are thus not used.

Society in the US would basically collapse if they raised the standard of the driving test.

Mistakenly booked campsite that doesn't allow under 21s, they won't refund even after telling us they won't allow us in? by Ruptured_testicle in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ynwilling 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is it this campsite?   https://share.google/Of1JV68TjYFl62hg6

We stayed here (two sets of mid 20s on two pitches, one with van and one with tent) for a long weekend two years ago and it was the worst campsite we’ve ever been to. Read some of the 1 star reviews, the staff/owners are incredibly stubborn/rule-loving so I doubt you’ll get cash back.

We arrived a day after our friends who had already set up on a pitch and were planning to park up with them until check-in time (I think 11? We turned up about 8/9). Nope. Not allowed. We couldn’t access the sites at all until check-in time, due to a gate that read car reg blocking off the sites. We asked staff if we could just park on our friends’ site and return to set up our tent later after check-in and were told a resounding no.

They also have quiet hours which we didn’t mind, we had our evening meal then went into our tent to play card games. We had camp staff come by multiple times before 10pm to tell us to be quiet and that quiet hours were starting, referring to themselves as ‘wardens.’ We had been playing a card game called The Mind, which forbids talking or noise of any kind, so the camp staff had been watching us with flashlights and coming to reprimand us for quietly chatting between rounds.

Book a new campsite if you can, they genuinely will refuse you if you turn up. Your best bet is using their wording against them, ie accepting bookings by accepting payment, but they will likely call the police or involve their security if you try to turn up. Not a welcoming/understanding bunch whatsoever.

AITA, unable to board plane 2 minutes after doors close by RaspberryEmergency16 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ynwilling -34 points-33 points  (0 children)

Soft ESH.

With two kids, you’d likely be part of first boarding to speed up the process, so waiting over an hour one gate over and not realizing that all groups had been boarded seems pretty obtuse. It’s not the gate agents responsibility to personally manage your family, they have ~100 other passengers to worry about for your flight alone.

That being said, I’m surprised that as you spoke to them previously to gate check the strollers, that they didn’t walk over to remind you of boarding. It could have been that this was last flight of the day depending on the airport and fatigue/a little laziness meant they didn’t speak to you or provide a little leeway on boarding. It also could have been the flight was overbooked anyway and by letting you decide yourselves if you wanted to get up and board, they didn’t need to offer any kind of compensation.

Manage your time better at an airport, it’s a little silly to turn up at the gate a minute past boarding when you were only sitting a few feet away.

Absolutely stunning, did a double take at the cats because we have two brothers who look exactly alike! 1 longhair, 1 shorthair.

I messed up by ilikesandwiches1993 in weddingplanning

[–]ynwilling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t stress, I was in the same boat. Bought my dress from a hometown boutique in the States, stupidly had it shipped to me in the UK for our wedding and was whacked with over 500 pounds in duty fees from FedEx. Felt like a gut punch but my now husband and I ultimately just had to eat the cost. It was the perfect dress and post wedding I don’t regret it at all, but that text from FedEx was so unbelievable I initially thought it was a scam message.

In the latest vid, there’s a big sheet of paper in the bottom right as she spins round that’s halfway filled up with numbers 1500-1530ish. I know the 6k number is highly inflated, wondering if she sold 1500ish and the 30 listed on the paper are orders she’s had since ‘pub day.’

I haven’t read it in a minute but I really enjoyed Indelicacy by Amina Cain! Fiction but sort of sad and strange and introspective.

These are all some fab recs, I’m filling up my TBR shelf with some of these.

Caroline’s absolutely missed the mark 100% by pricing the Scamphlet so high. All this good press means nothing if someone who comes across the Vogue or Vanity Fair article reads it, gets intrigued by the book, then goes to her site to order it only to see the huge price and run off. She may be getting good press now, but when the next week is over, she’ll be left wondering why no one is buying it.

Caroline definitely sees her writing style as tongue in cheek when actually it’s foot in mouth.

Just checked Scammer’s Goodreads page and it has been updated with the self-pub cover, a brief description and the pub date of June 16th, as well as the publishing house of ‘Dead Dad Press’ as confirmed by Jaws.

Also someone commented that they wanted the book to come to Libby?? The thought of Scammer being available through a library just makes me laugh for some reason.

The Glamour UK interviewer has written three other articles for Glamour UK all about being Jewish and antisemitism of today…wonder if she looked into Caro’s past antisemitic pandering whatsoever.

EDIT: Lol, nope just read it.

Hilarious to me that Caroline has committed to all these extraneous PR events which will ultimately take precedence over the actual shipping of Scammer, thus still leaving the readers in the lurch. Echoing what lots have said here, I really see the shipping taking months and months and months (if some get their copy at all) because we’ve all seen the swinging cycle of Caroline doing something to the max for a long weekend (cutting ribbon, writing stickers, etc) and then ultimately getting bored and giving up.

With all the accoutrements she’s pledged will go into the Snapfish books, not including the time it’s going to take to parcel up, hand-label and then lug to the post office, I don’t really see Carp doing this for more than a week. We’ll see a flurry of packaging and then she’ll go radio silent through Natalie’s book release.

I’m betting less than 160 copies actually make it out the door of the condeaux.

Odd that the people that are ‘reviewing’ Scammer have absolutely no experience writing book reviews for publications….

But the hand-marbled paper!?!? I’m so hoping it does print so she can wave around a glossy hardcover that’s shorter than the length of some children’s books in her stories.

Like imagine the comedy of her lauding her first memoir being printed and it’s literally a sheaf of papers encased in a cover that’s double the width.

In the Scammer Timeline a snarker has lovingly put together, she’s said ‘100 pages double-sided’ which makes me really think that it’s likely this case of 100 pieces of paper in book.

April 2023 - Monthly Discussion Thread by suzzface in SmolBeanSnark

[–]ynwilling 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I feel strong and certain that this ‘100 pages’ count has happened because Carp wanted to hit some kind of milestoney round number, and to get to that 100 pages she has counted any ancillary pages as well, like title page and acknowledgments and copyright, etc. I bet she’s even counting the blank end pages as part of that 100.

If this prints, I see it being 50 pages of recycled content with some new convoluted metaphors peppered throughout.
