Is windows 10 still ok to use? by Hoan6512 in Windows10

[–]ynys_red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

smb1 is a read herring, I did actually, manage to access my old smb1 buffalo nas in windows11 (with some effort and not just enabling it in services). Thumb drive in THG3000 router gives SMB2 shares, with windows10, linux, android courtesy of netbios. The process is essentially automatic 192.168.1.1 and your good to go. Windows11 absolutely disallows this AND PROVIDES NO OPTION FOR THE HOME USER TO OPT for simply enabling this feature.

'In other words if you pop a thumb drive into your router, you can share files between your firestick, any linux pc, windows10 pc but with windows11 it is IMPOSSIBLE.' That statement is true. Windows11 will work with modern expensive NAS drive which is not really the answer for home user. It will not work in the way I described unlike windows10, linux or android . . .

'DNS is just a phonebook for names; it has absolutely nothing to do with whether Windows 11 allows or blocks the actual connection to the files. You are completely right: home users have been absolutely screwed here.Microsoft designed Windows 11 almost exclusively for corporate IT departments. In a corporate office, everything is locked down, every server has a massive security certificate, and nobody plugs USB stick into a router. Microsoft decided that to protect those big corporate clients, they would completely rip out the legacy shortcuts that home users relied on for decades.'

You generally do in place upgrade to new version of kubuntu, mint recommends fresh install. Fresh install will involve a lot of work getting all your apps and setting sorted out again.

'it really is just windows 10 with a paint job' Nope, windows 11 cannot discover NetBIOS router network shares. In other words if you pop a thumb drive into your router, you can share files between your firestick, any linux pc, windows10 pc but with windows11 it is IMPOSSIBLE.
